Het ging slecht met De Beweging. In december 1914 ving De Haan het gerucht op dat het blad zou worden opgeheven. Op 21 december schreef hij aan Verwey: ‘Versluys zeide mij evenwel, dat dit niet zou gebeuren. Mocht u mijn financieele steun voor het Tijdschrift zoo noodig willen aanvaarden, dan zal ik doen wat ik doen kan. Het ophouden van De Beweging acht ik een ramp, die gekeerd moet worden’816.. In februari 1915 kwamen Gerretson, De Haan, Bloem en Verwey bijeen om te bespreken hoe men abonnees kon werven voor De Beweging. Zestig nieuwe abonnees, dat was het aantal dat nodig was om het blad uit de rode cijfers te halen. Er kwam een plan om een circulaire te ontwerpen, er was sprake van een ‘commissie tot steun v[an] d[e] Bew[eging]’, maar op 7 april 1915, zoals Bloem aan Van Eyck schrijft, bleken de resultaten ‘vrij bedroevend’: er waren dertig abonnees geworven, ‘dat is net de helft’. Bloem voegt daaraan toe: ‘ik maakte ook kennis met de Haan’ (alsof dat niet in februari gebeurd zou zijn) en noemt hem ‘een van de wonderlijkste types, die ik ooit ontmoet heb, maar ik mag hem toch wel graag’. Er is sprake van een ‘hulde-comité voor Verwey's 50ste verjaardag’, waarin: Berlage, Is.P. de Vooys, Uyldert en anderen, en een circulaire die, ‘op 't initiatief van de Haan’, ook naar bibliotheken en leeszalen gestuurd werd. In mei 1915 vond een diner in Noordwijk plaats. Bloem logeerde bij De Haan in Amsterdam: ‘een paar allergezelligste dagen’. In maart moet Wiessing aan De Haan zijn ‘vriendelijk aanbod’ hebben gedaan. Wiessing redigeerde sinds december 1914 een eigen blad: De Nieuwe Amsterdammer, ook wel genoemd: De Nieuwe Groene of Mosgroene. Op 19 december meldde het blad dat Albert Verwey ‘de mogelijkheid [voorziet], dat hij zijn tijdschrift De Beweging weldra zal hebben te staken’817.. Nadat De Haan het ‘aanbod’ van Wiessing had doorgestuurd naar H.P. Berlage (die redakteur van De Beweging was), resulteerde de samenwerking in een ‘advertentieteekening’, een grote, typografisch ontworpen tekst ‘DE BEWEGING’, ondertekend met A.C.B., dochter A.C. van architect H.P. Berlage, in De Nieuwe Groene in vier afleveringen in mei. Op 15 mei publiceerde het blad ook nog een opstel van Arthur van Schendel over Verwey en als bijvoegsel een houtsnede van J.G. Veldheer: ‘Albert Verwey 1865-1915’. |
