Sinds dien is het mij echter zeer slecht gegaan in menig opzicht. Giza zeide mij, dat ze bij je was geweest. Herinner je, dat je mij hebt beloofd, dat je bij me zoudt komen als je in Amsterdam zoudt zijn. Maar kom liever niet te samen met de goede Giza. Zij doet altijd zeer vroolijk alsof daar aanleiding voor was. Zij maakt mij somber. Ik ben moe en bedrukt. Ik geloof en hoop, dat een bedaard gesprek met je of een brief van je mij veel goed zouden doen. Ik ben altijd thuis, maar als je komt, telefoneer het even. (No 8600 Gem. Geneesk. Dienst808..) Op 20 december 1908 publiceerde De Amsterdammer een stuk van De Haan, getiteld: ‘Deugdverschaffing van overheidswege’. Boven het stuk plaatste De Haan een volzin van Bolland: ‘Geen dwazer dweperij dan het dwepen met wettelijke afschaffing van alle verkeerdheid’. Meer en meer bemoeit de overheid zich met de genoegens en de gebreken van volwassenen, aldus De Haan. Er hangt een dreiging van local option voor alcoholische dranken in de lucht, zo vervolgt het stuk, een systeem dat het geheelonthouders mogelijk maakt de verkoop van alcohol in delen van het land te verbieden, een dreiging die De Haan een analogieredenering in de pen geeft: stel je voor dat vegetariërs de kans kregen in delen van het land het gebruik van vlees te verbieden! Ging men die kant op, dan ‘zou in iedere gemeente iedere meerderheid iedere minderheid kunnen berooven van ieder genot, dat iedere meerderheid in strijd acht met hare beginselen van goed en kwaad’. Daartegenover stelt De Haan: ‘iedereen moet zelf weten welke genoegens hij als de zijne verkiest’. In Nederland echter ‘vormt zich eene meerderheid, waanzinnig van deugd, die ieder genot wil verbieden, dat zij zelve niet noodig heeft’. Als voorbeeld geeft hij een aantal leden van de Tweede Kamer, die het ‘opdrinken van absinth’ (voor sommigen ‘een subtiel genoegen’) strafbaar willen stellen. Ook klinkt her en der waarschuwing en protest tegen aanstootgevende boeken in openbare leeszalen809., omdat (en nu volgt een zeer verrassende wending in De Haans betoog) ‘in die leeszalen nog andere boeken zullen liggen dan het, ook door de christelijke jeugd zoo goed gekende, Aziatische Boek, dat het verhaal bevat van Lot en zijne dochters, van Juda en zijne schoondochter810., om nu slechts twee verhalen te noemen, die mij vroeger meer dan andere afstootten, toen ik een heidensche jongen was’. De averechtse verjaarsbrief die De Haan op 31 december 1908 aan De Koo schreef (hij was jarig, niet De Koo), laat weinig lichtpuntjes zien. Het ging het tweetal De Haan-Van Maarseveen geldelijk blijkbaar meer voor de wind dan in 1906, toen De Haan aan Van Eeden vertelde hoe ‘verarmd’ dokter Van Maarseveen wel was811., en dan in 1907, althans als men op de suggestie in de nerveuze vertelling ‘De bloemen en de brief’ mag afgaan: ‘onaangename besprekingen [hadden] haar toch zeer in de praktijk geschaad’812.. Een stuk ‘De Zwarte Terreur’ is nooit gepubliceerd. Interpreteert men ‘zwart’ als: ‘christelijk’ of ‘confessioneel’, dan is het denkbaar dat het hier inderdaad gaat om de houding van de christelijke wethouder en de katholieke schoolopziener kort tevoren. De Haans opmerking, in zijn brief van 20 november aan De Vries, ‘dat u als wethouder en de Heer Sterck als schoolopziener op mij als onderwijzer hebt verhaald de bezwaren die u als antirevolutionnair en de Heer Sterck als Roomsch-Katholiek hebt tegen mij als letterkundig kunstenaar’, lijkt een geschikte kiemcel voor een requisitoir. |
