Uw brief, die mij zeer veel leed doet, heb ik van morgen in zeer onaangename omstandigheden ontvangen. Ik ben n.l. deze week plotseling, zonder eenigen opzegtermijn door B. en W. van Amsterdam ontslagen als reserve-onderwijzer aan de gemeente-scholen, alleen op grond van mijne geschriften. Ik heb dus nu geene betrekking en geene kans er eene te vinden. Gelijk met uwen brief kwam een brief, die deze zaak onherroepelijk afsnijdt. Daarbij een brief van eene krankzinnige zuster van mij uit Meerenberg om hulp en u kunt u precies voorstellen in welke stemming ik u beantwoord. Mocht ik dus bits worden: houd het mij ten goede. Wat de opdracht aan den Prinz zu Eulenburg betreft, ik kon die niet anders plaatsen dan in de drukproef. Want ik weet nooit vooraf welke fragmenten er door u uitgekozen zullen worden of welke novellen en ik had dus boven alle fragmenten de opdracht moeten zetten, wat eenvoudig bespottelijk zou zijn geweest. Bovendien: toen ik u, in het begin nog des jaars, mijn proza zond was de Prins Zu Eulenburg, die wat hij nog meer zij, toch een goed kunstenaar is, nog niet zoo behandeld, dat ik als protest een dédicace moest gebruiken799.. Dat een auteur in het algemeen in de drukproef geen opdracht zou mogen zetten, is niet juist. En uw bezwaar geldt de opdracht aan den Prinz Zu Eulenburg. Ware het b.v. Giza Ritschl geweest, die het mij gevraagd had, dan hadt u geen bezwaar gemaakt. Ik heb absoluut niet iets achter uwen rug willen doen, zooals u schrijft. Dat valt buiten mijn aard. Bovendien: ik dacht, dat u bij het opmaken van het tijdschrift de stukken onder de oogen kreegt. U hadt 15 fragmenten geaccepteerd en daarvan waren er 10 geplaatst. in de Nov. aflev. Hebt u dus, toen u besliste, dat de fragmenten niet in eene aflevering konden, de opdracht niet gezien? Wat de ongunstige uitlatingen der couranten betreft: de couranten zijn mal. In October had ik eene bijdrage in Groot-Nederland. Het Vaderland moet er over geschreven hebben (ik heb het maar van hooren zeggen!) dat ze niet begrepen, hoe zoo een stuk in een tijdschrift kwam. Over hetzelfde stuk schreef de Hollandsche Revue zeer bewonderend: mooi, intensief, gevoelig proza, curieus en exquis. Zoekt u het nu maar uit. Ik word vrij goed op de hoogte gehouden van wat de couranten zeggen over tijdschriften, waaraan ik medewerk. Welnu: Het Handelsblad had geene ongunstige uitlating. De Telegraaf zei iets onaangenaams van mij persoonlijk, maar noemde de aflevering zeer belangrijk. Het spijt mij, dat abonnés wegens de opdracht bedankt hebben800.. Maar zulk soort abonnés hadden ook wel kunnen bedanken door het enkele feit van mijne medewerking of door het feit, dat op de band van de Nieuwe Gids eene annonce voor mijne geschriften voorkomt801.. Waarlijk: men kan het toch nooit iedereen naar den zin maken. Ik wil in het midden laten of een redacteur het recht heeft eene geaccepteerde bijdrage weder terug te zenden. Mij dunkt: als u waarlijk mijn werk, dat u waardevol vindt, voor de Hollandsche letterkunde hadt willen behouden, dan hadt u voorloopig kunnen volstaan met mij te vragen buiten uwe voorkennis geene opdrachten meer te doen. Zooals u nu eene bijdrage, die reeds gezet is, laat wegvallen en mij eene andere geaccepteerde terugzendt, maakt u het mij zeer zwaar, en dat is niet noodig. In dit verband nog eene andere zaak. De Heer L. van Deyssel had voor de 20ste Eeuw sinds October 1906 eene groote bijdrage geaccepteerd, die wegens plaatsgebrek nog niet werd opgenomen. U kent dat werk: fragmenten uit het tweede deel van ‘Pijpelijntjes’. Hebt u bezwaar tegen de plaatsing van dat werk in de gecombineerde Nieuwe-Gids en 20ste Eeuw? Wat ik eenige maanden geleden niet dacht is door eene plotselinge wending gebeurd: ik ben bijna volkomen uit de Hollandsche letterkunde weggedrongen. Er is nog slechts één tijdschrift (Groot-Nederland.) waar ik iets zou kunnen plaatsen. Van morgen toen ik uwen brief kreeg stonden veronal en morfine naast mijn bed. Ik dacht: een weinig meer dan anders en uit is de smart. Met vriendelijke groeten en blijvende waardeering uw dienstw. Jacob Israël de Haan
De Pijpelijntjes-affaire was uitgegroeid tot een Pijpelijntjes-Pathologieën-affaire en daar bovenop de aanvaring met Kloos - geen wonder dat De Haan aan De Koo schreef: ‘Ben verder van huis dan ooit’. Hij wendde zich tot de Bond van Nederlandse Onderwijzers, immers een soort vakbond, maar de Bond liet De Haans Berufsverbot passeren en De Bode plaatste De Haans protest niet. Naar de inhoud van dat ‘artikeltje’ kunnen we wel raden. In zijn brief aan De Koo vinden we precies dezelfde soort analogie-redenering als hij in 1905 in zijn Open brief aan P.L. Tak aanwendde, bijvoorbeeld: de parallel met de veldwachter die een arbeider een bloedneus sloeg. Het betreft hier een cause célèbre uit 1907802.. Op 9 september 1907 zou Hendrik Garsthagen, sjouwerman te Papendrecht, door gemeente-veldwachter De Meij een bloedneus zijn gestompt. Met behulp van een notaris stelde Garsthagen over het incident een stuk op, dat in de Dordrechtsche Courant van 11 september 1907 werd geplaatst803.. Veldwachter De Meij werd in november 1908 buiten vervolging gesteld. De socialist Troelstra interpelleerde in de Tweede Kamer. Frans Coenen was de door Wiessing met nadruk naar voren geschoven letterkundige medewerker van De Groene. In een brief van 13 december 1908 aan De Koo (die het niet met Wiessing eens was) houdt deze een pleidooi voor Coenen, omdat die ‘1. tot in de werkelijk “letterkundige kringen” gezag heeft en 2. zéér leesbaar is voor het groote publiek’. Coenen besprak Pathologieën op 28 februari 1909 in De Groene. Hij vond het boek ‘kleinkunst’ en wel ‘van het vervelende genre’, een ‘zwakkere dubbelganger’ van de Adriaantjes van Van Deyssel804.. |
