Langs vele wegen is het mij ter oore gekomen, dat Gij u beklaagd hebt over het feit, dat ik in de Hofstad eenen brief heb gepubliceerd, dien u mij indertijd geschreven hebt naar aanleiding van mijnen roman ‘Pijpelijntjes’. Ik wil u er nu wel op wijzen, dat die brief reeds vier jaar geleden door mij gepubliceerd is743.. Ik heb u, dat zult Gij u wel willen herinneren verlof tot die publicatie gevraagd744. en u hebt daarop niet eens geantwoord. Door mijn letterkundig werk is de rust mijns levens volkomen vernietigd. Kortom: het is eene diepe ellende, waaruit ik niet meer komen zal. Er staat in dien brief niets, waardoor u of derden gecompromitteerd worden. Het tegendeel is waar. Ik vraag u dus nu, mijnheer: laat die zaak rusten. Dus: laat haar rusten. Ik zit niet vol slechte streken, maar de menschen jagen mij op, waardoor ik niet op adem kan komen. Daar kan ik niet tegen en daar zoudt u ook niet tegen kunnen. Dus: ik vraag u beleefd: help mij liever ter wille van mijn werk, dat een schat voor de Hollandsche letterkunde is, in stede, dat u mij niet helpt of tegenwerkt. Met verschuldigde gevoelens uw zeer dienstw. Jacob Israël de Haan Ik neem bij dezen brief beleefd de vrijheid u te herinneren aan het tweede deel van ‘Pijpelijntjes’, dat reeds ruim twee jaren in uw bezit is745.. Ik zou het wel prettig vinden als de fragmenten door u gekozen, gepubliceerd zouden worden. |
