Palestrinastr.Beste Van Eeden, dank voor je briefkaart, waaruit ik heb gezien, dat je gekwetst bent over de wijze, waarop ik over je Gidsartikel geschreven heb. Ik kan het niet helpen. Ik ben begonnen met de mogelijkheid te stellen, dat mijn verstand niet goed genoeg meer voor een diepzinnig artikel zou zijn. Ik heb het artikel nu niet meer in mijn huis en kan dus niet zooveel bewijzen, als ik anders doen zou. Een hoofddenkbeeld herinner ik mij nog wel. Het was dit: dat de menschen niet rationeel handelen, hoewel ze meenen, dat ze dit wel doen. En dat dit maar goed is ook, want dat de maatschappij daarmede is gebaat. Je hebt dit idee met voorbeelden uit de handelswereld toegelicht. Met het denkbeeld ben ik het absoluut niet eens. Het is zeer de vraag, wat rationeel is. Je kunt toch niet gaan beweren, dat iemand niet-rationeel handelt, omdat hij anders handelt dan jij zoudt doen. Ik geloof, dat de eenige algemeen gangbare regel deze is, dat de menschen doen wat ze het liefst willen. Je geeft bijvoorbeeld het voorbeeld van eenen koopman, die schatrijk is en dus om 't geld niet meer werken hoeft. Maar die toch zijne wereldzaken drijven blijft en kleinere concurrenten afmaakt tot baat van de maatschappij. Hoewel hij dat zelf niet weet. Handelt die man irrationeel? Absoluut niet. Ik kan mij heel goed voorstellen, dat die man buiten zijne zaken geene behoeften heeft. Dat hij bijvoorbeeld aan het werk blijft, omdat hij zich anders hoopeloos verveelt. Als die man gaarne reist, zal hij zijne zaken eindigen. Wellicht tot schade van de maatschappij. Maar naar welke maatstaf beoordeel je de ratio? Ik zal je nu een voorbeeld uit mijne omgeving geven. Een oom van mij is een zeer goed docent in de wiskunde668. en zijne lessen zijn zeker maatschappelijk nuttig. Hij heeft een pensioen verdiend, dat weinig van zijn salaris verschilt. Om een verschil van een paar honderd guldens geeft hij dus vele lesuren. Dit zou dus een voorbeeld zijn van iemand, die niet rationeel handelt, hetgeen de maatschappij ten goede komt? Absoluut niet. Die man is in zijn werk vastgeroest. Daarbuiten heeft hij geene behoeften of genoegens. Als hij zijn werk nederlegt verveelt hij zich dood. Daarom blijft hij aan zijn werk. Is dat niet zeer rationeel? Mij dunkt van wel. Alleen wie niet de levensmotieven van dien man kent, zal zeggen, dat hij niet rationeel is. Ik geloof, dat hij desnoods geld zou willen toegeven om zijne lessen te mogen blijven geven. Dat lijkt jou 't toppunt van niet-rationeel zijn. Als wij samen het bewuste artikel konden lezen, zou ik er nog meer van kunnen zeggen. Maar uit het bovenstaande zie je toch, dat je ratio-idée niet nieuw is en ook niet bijzonder. Ik hoop, dat je dezen brief eenigszins op prijs stelt. Ik had in den tijd, dien ik ervoor gebruik ook iets anders kunnen doen. Bijvoorbeeld proza van Oscar Wilde lezen. Maar ik wilde je laten zien, dat ik maar niet op losse gronden geoordeeld heb. Het spijt mij, dat je altijd dadelijk boos wordt, wanneer men niet in alles met je meegaat. Ben ik boos geworden, toen je vroeger zeide, dat mijn poëzie op Kloos en Gorter gelijkt. Of mijn tegenwoordig proza op Van Deyssel. Of mijn roman ‘Pathologieën’ op ‘Van de koele meren des Doods’. Je hebt nooit een woord goedgevonden van de dingen, die ik gemaakt heb. Hoewel andere kunstenaars mij zeer prezen, en dus mijn werk zeer zeker niet objectief waardeloos is. Dat neem ik je niet kwalijk. Integendeel: ik waardeer je zeer. En toen ik mij ziek van ziel gevoelde, heb ik naar je gevraagd. Dat is het beste bewijs van eene diepe en ernstige genegenheid. Ik heb nooit naar iemand gevraagd in al de jaren van mijn ellende niet. Dat zijn er vier. En Indische jaren tellen dubbel. Het werk in de school valt mij zeer moeilijk. De klas is zeer groot, vijftig. De kinderen staan mij tegen. Ik gevoel mij vallen en zie geen steun. Groet de goede Giza van mij. Veel goeds wordt je gewenscht door je vriend Joop |
