U moet maar denken, zoo'n brievedingetje van mij, dat is net als de pieperij van poes, die ze opjagen, en die nou in de nauwheid komt. De menschen gaan voort te schelden en te schenden. Wilt u mij Van Eedens brief zenden? Ik heb zeer veel verdriet. Maar denk toch door te zetten. Ik dank u nog voor uw laatste hartelijke brief. Giza laat u groeten. In zijn ‘verantwoording’ van 9 augustus 1904 had De Haan de brief van Roukema geciteerd en daartegen geprotesteerd: ‘Mijn huis werd dus besmet verklaard’. Roukema heeft daarop gereageerd. In een brief aan de redactie van Het Volk vinden we het verhaal. Het antwoord van de redactie op deze brief is niet bewaard gebleven.

25 Augustus Sweelinckstraat 12 Aan de Redaktie van Het Volk W.P., Zoo spoedig mogelijk na het verschijnen van Jacob de Haan's ‘verantwoording’ zond ik U een ingezonden stuk. Dit werd niet geplaatst. Ook werd ik van de niet-plaatsing in de correspondentie niet ingelicht. Toen, ruim een week daarna, vroeg ik U per briefkaart, hoe het zat met dat stuk. Ook hierop bleef tot heden nòg weer een week later, elk antwoord achterwege. Ik begrijp niet, waaraan ik die eigenaardige bejegening, die wel wat op onheuschheid gaat gelijken, verdiend heb. Ik kan me heel goed voorstellen, dat U het stuk niet kondt plaatsen. Het was lang, te lang waarschijnlijk voor de onbelangrijke kwestie. Maar waarom mij daarvan dan geen kennis gegeven. Of was er voor U nog een andere reden? In elk geval had ik eenig antwoord verwacht, en ik hoop, dat ik dat nu dan ook nog krijg. Natuurlijk verlang ik niet meer, dat het stuk nu nog geplaatst wordt. Op dezelfde datum, donderdag 25 augustus 1904, adverteerde de Amsterdamse Federatie van de SDAP in Het Volk: ‘Partijgenooten! Zondag a.s., 28 Augustus, des avonds ten 7 uur, komen er 300 Brusselsche partijgenooten in Holland, en zullen tot Dinsdagmorgen in Amsterdam blijven. Nu moeten er 50 gidsen zijn, die hun de versch. bezienswaardigheden laten zien. Zij die hiervoor in aanmerking wenschen te komen, worden verzocht a.s. Donderdagavond 25 Aug., te 8 uur, in het gebouw van den A.N.D.B. te komen’. In zijn agenda van ingekomen post noteerde Roukema op 25 augustus: ‘J. de Haan wil gids zijn voor de Belgen’. Een desbetreffende brief van De Haan is niet bewaard gebleven. Binnen de SDAP bleef De Haan actie voeren. Het bleek een handicap dat hij als partijlid was opgestapt. De Commissie van Arbitrage informeerde naar het recht van niet-partijleden om de tussenkomst van die commissie in te roepen: alleen partijleden hadden dat recht360.. Toen meldde De Haan zich als een haas weer aan. Op 19 september 1904 nam afdeling V van de SDAP in Amsterdam geen beslissing ‘over zijn weder aannemen als lid’, aldus de notulen, die daarna werden doorgestreept. Op 25 september vroeg de commissie De Haan schriftelijk om inlichtingen361.. De tweede of zoals De Haan wel zei: de ‘andersche’ editie van Pijpelijntjes362. doorkruiste De Haans campagne voor eerherstel in de socialistische gelederen en zonder twijfel met opzet. Als eerste doel stond De Haan voor ogen: erkenning als kunstenaar. Als tweede: rehabilitatie als socialist. Intussen was er nog steeds geen advertentie voor Pijpelijntjes-tweede versie in Het Volk verschenen. Toen smeedde De Haan zich een nieuw wapen: hij stelde uit socialistische schetsjes een bundeltje Kanalje samen en voegde aan zijn naam op het titelblad toe: ‘Schrijver van Pijpelijntjes’. Zo zouden de partijgenoten toch wel moeten inzien dat, kort gezegd, homoseksualiteit en socialisme heel goed samen kunnen gaan. En Tak zou een advertentie voor Kanalje niet kunnen tegenhouden, omdat de verhalen uit dat boekje voor een groot deel in Het Volk gepubliceerd waren geweest. Inderdaad verscheen in Het Volk op 20 oktober 1904 een eerste advertentie van uitgever G.J. Lankkamp, op 23 oktober van Van Cleef een tweede (hoewel Van Cleef dit boekje niet had uitgegeven), op 25 oktober weer een van Lankkamp, met op 2 november aan de annonce als aanbeveling toegevoegd een citaat uit Voorwaarts en op 2 december ook nog citaten uit: Volksonderwijzer, Voorpost en Arnhemsche Courant363.. Dit was bedelen om een recensie. Maar Kanalje was natuurlijk ook in de ogen van Tak reclame voor Pijpelijntjes. Het boekje werd niet besproken. Het is dit bundeltje Kanalje, dat De Haan (er is een couvert met 26 augustus 1904 als datum) aan zijn jonge vriend Saalborn belooft. Al op 23 augustus 1904 adverteerde uitgever Lankkamp voor het boekje-in-wording in het Nieuwsblad voor den Boekhandel: ‘Gevraagd: een reiziger, die tegen hooge provisie wil aanbieden een boekje van Jacob de Haan (den bekenden schrijver van Pijpelijntjes)’. |
