St. Willibrordstraat.Geachte heer Thijm, ik moet u even nog bedanken voor uw laatste brief, dat zou ik wel eer gedaan hebben, maar ik ben zoo diep zielsziek geweest, dat ik dat niet kon. Ja, ik zal wel moed houden, zooals u schrijft, dat ik doen moet en niet mij door de menschen van de wijs laten brengen. Ik ben 'n heel mooie betrekking, die ik had, kwijtgeraakt, lam hè? Nu weet ik niet goed dadelijk hoe het [verder] moest en dus daar moet ik nog op spinnen. Dacht u, dat de menschen mij zoo deren zouden om mijn boek? Het doet me genoegen, dat Aletrino niet bij u is geweest en u niet heeft geschreven. Ik stuur U Van Eedens brief hierin, u zult 'm misschien graag willen lezen, maar ik wil 'm graag terughebben, wilt u 'm bij gelegenheid zenden? Ik zal u 'n vrindenexemplaar van de nieuwe editie sturen en hoop, dat u me tenminste 'n beetje helpen wilt. Dag van uw Jacob de Haan
Borel schrijft De Haan een verdrietige brief en Van Hall, de Gids-redacteur, is diep verontwaardigd. Dit brengt ons op een eigenaardige passage in het In Memoriam ‘Jacob Israël de Haan’, dat Henri Borel in Het Vaderland van 2 juli 1924 publiceerde. Hij herinnert zich De Haan als ‘de uitgestootene van het Volk en de Kroniek’. ‘Ik heb hem gekend, toen hij zijn Pijpelijntjes had uitgegeven, en zijn S.D.A.P.-vrienden hem er om verstieten, en hij niet meer in het Volk mocht schrijven, en hij als een geschuwde paria rondliep. “Durf je nog met me te loopen”, zeide hij eens in Amsterdam tegen me, “pas op, daar komt een Gids-redacteur aan!” Dat was in 1903’. In de De Haan-literatuur ziet men dit beeld wortelschieten: ‘Vrienden hebben het beeld bewaard van de desperado, die in de winter van het jaar 1904 door Amsterdam zwierf’ enz.351. Intussen maant het vermelde jaartal 1903 tot scepsis en ook heeft De Haan nooit aan De Kroniek meegewerkt. |
