32. De Haan aan Van der Goes, 24 juli 1903 of kort daarna
Beste man, ik ben vandaag naar Zaandam, en ik stuur u 'n paar plaatjes, dit is wel 'n leuk kiekje hè, ik heb lang daar gewoond. De kinderen in Middelburg zal ik ook sturen. We vergeten jelui nooit hoor. Dag beste V.d. Goes. Ik hoop, dat u 't goed maakt en weer 'n briefje aan iemand aan de krant schrijft. Dag uw Jacob de Haan.
Op 26 juli 1903 schreef mevrouw Troelstra in haar rubriek Letterkundige Kroniek in Het Volk: ‘Dezer dagen kreeg ik een brief van een jong schrijvertje en daaruit bleek me, dat hij mijn eerste “Kroniek”, waarin ik uiteenzette wat mijn plan is met deze rubriek, niet goed gelezen heeft’. In de volgende brief van De Haan aan Van der Goes komt dat jonge schrijvertje te voorschijn: de brief moet dus op of ná 25 juli 1903 geschreven zijn.
De grote veranderingen aan Het Volk, waarop De Haan zinspeelt, zullen te maken hebben met de voor de deur staande vervanging van Troelstra door P.L. Tak als hoofdredacteur.
Het district Sittard had in verkiezingsperioden een ‘treurige reputatie’, men sprak wel van ‘jeneververkiezingen’. Op 31 juli 1903 signaleerde Het Volk met verontwaardiging en snijdende spot de ijselijkste misstanden in Sittard: ‘Familieleden en vrienden van den Candidaat [Beckers] rijden de dorpen rond en bieden in elk café een koelen dronk aan de gasten. [...] De heer B. zal o.i. bij de eerste stemming worden gekozen’. De socialisten predikten geheelonthouding. ‘Onze S.D.A.P. staat hier wel vooraan in den strijd tegen 't kwaad’ schreef De Haan in Het Volk van 19 juli 1903.
