In tijdschriften en kranten is over de veroordeling van Van der Goes nog uitgebreid nagekaart. Eén ding leek zeker: zijn reputatie was gezuiverd. Charles Boissevain, die op 26 februari 1903 in het Algemeen Handelsblad als een der eersten de kat de bel had aangebonden (als Van der Goes de miliciens niet ophitste, ‘dan verstaan wij geen Hollandsch’) en die Van der Goes van ‘half en half terugkrabbelen’ had beschuldigd, draaide op 15 mei bij: ‘Ik geloof onvoorwaardelijk de toelichting welke hij van zijn woorden geeft’. Hij verklaarde door Van Deyssel overtuigd te zijn: Van der Goes had niet willen opruien, hij had zich alleen ‘onhandig uitgedrukt’. Van Deyssel vond dit, in De XXe Eeuw van juli 1903, een ‘edele betuiging’. Het Volk van 19 mei sprak van een ‘ruiterlijke verklaring’ die de laster de kop indrukte152.. Voor een dissonant ten aanzien van Van der Goes zorgde Frederik van Eeden. Aan de ene kant verzekerde hij op een vergadering z'n toehoorders dat hij van de tijd die Van der Goes ‘in 't schuurtje’ zou moeten zitten, dadelijk de helft zou overnemen, zo dat kon153., maar aan de andere kant vond hij diens verdediging een ‘apologie vol achterlijke en omzichtige spitsvondigheden’, waar Van der Goes ‘een treurig figuur’ mee maakte154.. Inmiddels had Van der Goes, nadat hij op 15 juli met Jacob Batavier155. in ‘Kras’ zijn galgemaal genuttigd had, op donderdag 16 juli 1903, 's morgens om 10 uur (hij had de datum zelf mogen kiezen), zijn cel in de gevangenis te Haarlem betrokken, opdat een straf van één maand eenzame opsluiting zou worden geëxecuteerd (zoals de vakterm luidt). Het was een moderne strafgevangenis, per 1 januari 1902 in bedrijf gesteld. Toch schreef Het Volk op 12 juli 1903 in een poging tot wrange humor: ‘De reden waarom v.d. Goes te Haarlem logeeren gaat, zit daarin dat dit etablissement hem door Hugenholtz is aanbevolen als voldoende aan alle eischen van de 16e eeuw’. Het Volk leefde hevig met de ‘voorlooper en geestelijken vader’ der SDAP mee. Het vonnis had aan Johan Vorrink zelfs een gedicht ‘Vertroosting’ ontlokt (17 mei 1903): ‘De mare van uw vonnis wrong uit de oogen / Ons een heete traan’ enzovoort. Op 19 juli geeft het blad een beschrijving van een cel en haar inventaris: tien vierkante meter oppervlakte, krib, tafel, bankje, gaslamp, wasbak, waterkruik en fecaliënemmer; terzijde van het gebouw mocht men wandelen. Van der Goes arriveerde met een koffer vol boeken, onder andere werken van Lamb, Dickens, Thackeray, Michelet, Villiers de l'Isle Adam (de Contes cruels) en Marx. Hij mocht baden en maakte kennis met de Kerker-directeur, L.J.C. Koderitsch, de dokter en de predikant, C. Veen. ‘Begonnen te werken’, noteerde hij die zelfde dag in de ‘Aanteekeningen’ in zijn ‘Tijdrooster’, een soort dagboek dat hij in de gevangenis bijhield. Dit zou in 1904 resulteren in de uitgave van een boek met vertalingen, Luimig proza, dat hij in het voorwoord aanbeval ‘als uitmuntend geschikt om de vreugde te verhoogen van stilte en afzondering’: de arbeid was verricht op ‘een plaats die zitten maar niet stilzitten voorschrijft’. De tweede dag had hij ‘maagpijn van roggebrood’, de derde dag, zaterdag 18 juli, kreeg hij tarwebrood. Op zondag 19 juli zijn er brieven, onder andere van ‘Jac. Haan’, en hoort hij een ‘abominabele preek’ van dominee Veen. Op 24 juli maakt Het Volk bekend dat Van der Goes in een brief heeft geschreven dat de beambten vriendelijk zijn, maar dat er een incident heeft plaatsgevonden waarmee hij niet erg ingenomen is: ‘Hij verzoekt van serenades verschoond te blijven’. Op zaterdag 25 juli spreekt hij, volgens een ‘aanteekening’, met de directeur over die ‘serenades’. Ook noteert hij op die dag: ‘Hugenholtz (no. 22) vrij!’. Post is er in overvloed: brieven van Pannekoek, Verwey, Aletrino (op maandag 3 augustus), De Koo, Van Looy en anderen. Eén brief van Van Hall over de continuering van zijn privaatdocentschap aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam, dat immers gevaar liep156.. In Het Volk van 18 augustus 1903 betuigt Van der Goes dank ‘aan allen, die door hunnen brieven - meer dan zestig in getal - mij een plezierig en sympathiek tijdverdrijf hebben verschaft. Het is mij niet mogelijk (evenmin als ik in de gevangenis daartoe in de gelegenheid was) hun afzonderlijk te beantwoorden’. Het is wel zeker dat de brieven van Jacob Israël de Haan aan de gedetineerde Van der Goes tot de onbeantwoorde behoren. Anders dan bij zijn andere briefwisselingen, waarbij de brieven aan De Haan meestal verloren gegaan zijn, hebben we hier dus te maken met een werkelijk eenzijdige correspondentie. De Haan lijkt soms wel een beetje op een reactie gerekend of gehoopt te hebben; in elk geval leidden de vraagjes die hij van tijd tot tijd stelt, tot verlevendiging van zijn stijl en van het contact. Het moet primair zijn bedoeling zijn geweest de eenzaam opgesloten Van der Goes plezierig bezig te houden. Vandaar de diversiteit van onderwerpen die hij ter sprake brengt. Daarbij tracht hij in tweede instantie Van der Goes' intellectuele interesse te wekken voor zijn interessante connecties (Verwey, Borel, Aletrino) en zijn interessante lectuur (Verlaine, stukken van Van der Goes zelf). Zo komen ook vanzelf het enthousiasme en de ambitie naar voren, waarmee De Haan zijn rubriek in het Zondagsblad redigeerde. Over Kwan Yin, een Chinees-boedhistische godin van barmhartigheid, had Henri Borel in 1897 het werk Kwan Yin. Een boek van de goden en de hel gepubliceerd, dat De Haan zeker gelezen heeft. Een van de vijf verhalen in dit werk vertelt van een priester die op zich neemt een mysterieuze ‘soetra’ op te sporen, een heilig boek, ‘dat de zielen de zaligheid van Nirvana kan doen verkrijgen’. Onder bescherming van Kwan Yin volbrengt de priester een reis vol avonturen en gevaren, maar als hij tenslotte dat ‘kostbare boek’ vindt en het opslaat, ziet hij ‘niets dan schoon papier, onbeschreven’. Pas ‘na intenze meditatie, van zeven dagen en nachten lang, ál maar doorstarende op het papier’ beseft hij dat ‘alleen de ziel, niet de oogen’ deze ‘soetra zonder karakters’ kan lezen. Het motief zal later bij De Haan terugkeren in een nerveuze vertelling, waar Jezus Christus met ‘ingespannen aandacht’ zit te turen in een boek, ‘blankwit van bladzijden, zonder letterteekens’. De hoofdpersoon van het verhaal, Heleen Golesco, vraagt ‘naar de soort en de waarde van dat boek’, en Jezus antwoordt: ‘Het is zoo'n bijzonder boek...je vindt de bladen enkel wit? Als je er zeer aandachtig in leert lezen, dan merk je dat wel anders...’. En dan speelt De Haan verder met het motief: ‘Er is ook een rood boek, net als dit witte zonder letters’, het boek van Satan157.. Op zondag 19 juli 1903 publiceerde Het Volk het ‘nummer’ van Van der Goes: ‘Het nummer van onzen partijgenoot in de strafgevangenis te Haarlem is 24. Brieven aan hem gericht, moeten alleen dit nummer, niet zijn naam op de enveloppe vermelden’. De eerste brief van De Haan zal dus op 18 juli geschreven zijn (de krant werd één dag geantedateerd); op 19 juli noteert Van der Goes in zijn ‘Aanteekeningen’ de ontvangst van een brief van ‘Jac. Haan’. Helaas ontbreekt de aanhef van de eerste brief. Zoals wel vaker in zijn brieven aan Van der Goes is De Haan begonnen op ansichtkaarten (in deze brief zijn het kaarten uit Hilversum, waar Van der Goes woonde); uit de nummering valt op te maken, dat de eerste, tweede en vijfde kaart zijn zoekgeraakt. |
