Ik heb al m'n meetkunderommel bij jou in 't gangetje bij de deur vergeten en ik moet wel 250 sommen maken. Dus wou ik 't zoo vreeslijk graag terug hebben. Maar ik begrijp wel, dat dat lastig is voor je. Maar weet je wat je moest doen: Leg ze onder in de broodkist, dan laat ik ze halen in de Borgerstraat126. of ik haal ze zelf. Dan koop ik meteen sportbeschuit. De juffrouw zal voor mij Waldensch bruin brood koopen maar Koo is S.D.A.P. en die wil dat ze 't van de Dageraad neemt. Maar dat wil ik niet. Zeg je even wat van me tegen je vrouw? Dan moet je maar zeggen, dat ik die man die Grieksch wil leeren zonder grammaire niet hebben wil. Ik zal hem afschrijven. En dat ik met Hannie Engelsch ga lezen. En dat 't Berlitz boek127. erg mooi is en dat ik ook 't tweede wel graag hebben wil. Dan hoef ik 't niet te huren. Hannie was gisteren aan 't station, dus ben ik toch maar blij geweest, dat ik er ook was. Ze zei dat Gorter ook goed les geeft en niet zoo ijselijk duur is ook. Maar ik wil geen les van Gorter hebben. Laat-i maar uit S.D.A. Peeën gaan. Vanmiddag heb ik 't erg druk. Ik moet naar Treub om te zien of ik stage bij hem kan loopen. of anders moet ik z'n dictaat zien te leenen. Dan laat ik 't afschrijven met de typewriter. Dan heb ik 't veel netter en duidelijker dan als ik 'n dictaat koop. En veel goedkooper ook. Pas op, niet lachen hoor. Dat is heelemaal geen laag beginsel, zooals je gisteren zei. Ik heb wel elke maand f 66 maar daar moet ik wat van geven ook. En als ik zuinig ben heb ik wat voor 'n ander ook. Treub wacht me om half 5. Dus dat is haast-je rep-je. Hij woont in de Vossiusstraat 57. Maar dat zal wel in jou adresboek staan. Ik mag wel weer eens gauw bij je komen hè. Je doet toch geregeld je werk, is 't niet? Maar je moet zelf schrijven wanneer. Hier heb je 't Kiekje van 't huis van Verwey. Heb ik 't niet netjes verpakt. Dag, duizend groetjes van Joob. Voor Paultje krijg ik gauw wat 'n mooi boekje. Dat krijgt-i dan gauw. Zie je vandaag gaan we verhuizen ook. Dag. Als 't erg lastig is van de boeken stuur ze dan maar niet. Donderdag ga ik ze halen en als ze er dan niet zijn Zaterdag ook nog eens. En Zondag heb ik weer les. Dan koop ik ze Zaterdag maar. Voor oud zie je. Maar 't is jammer. Eigenlijk had ik ze niet moeten vergeten. Dag. Die vlek op de photo is niet Joobs schuld. 't Zat 'm in de plaat. Dag.
Nadat De Haan door Van Wayenburg opnieuw was afgekeurd, bleef hij met de hem beter gezinde Aletrino in contact: ‘door die keuring en door v. Hamel is het bij die eene visite niet gebleven en is de Haan meer en meer bij ons t'huis gekomen’, schrijft Aletrino aan Robbers. Waarschijnlijk was het Aletrino's belangstelling voor de problemen van determinatie en degeneratie, die De Haan ‘bang en in de war’ maakte. Over Vacher zal Aletrino hem zeker het boek Vacher l'éventreur et les crimes sadiques van Alexandre Lacassagne, gepubliceerd in 1899 en vermeld in Aletrino's Handleiding bij de studie der crimineele anthropologie uit 1902, hebben laten zien. De landloper Joseph Vacher, geboren in 1869, werd in 1895 beschuldigd van de afschuwelijke moord op een zestienjarige herdersknaap; de jongen werd gewurgd en opengesneden; de geslachtsdelen had Vacher, naar hij beweerde, met de tanden afgebeten; het gemutileerde lijk was vervolgens door hem verkracht. Vacher bekende een reeks eendere misdaden, door hem begaan in 1894 en 1895; hij werd verdacht ook van misdaden daarvóór gepleegd. De zaak verwekte opschudding, in en buiten Frankrijk. Alexandre Lacassagne vergeleek Vacher met Gilles de Retz en met Jack the Ripper; zijn boek bevat ook een studie van De Sade en Sacher-Masoch en verwijzingen naar het werk van Krafft-Ebing en Lombroso; opvallend zijn de zeer sensationele illustraties. Het proces tegen Vacher vond in oktober 1898 plaats en duurde drie dagen. Op 31 december 1898, dus op De Haans verjaardag, werd de éventreur, die zichzelf ‘la grande victime fin de siècle’ noemde, onder applaus van de menigte onthoofd. Op dezelfde dag waarop De Haan aan Van Eeden schreef, schrijft hij ook aan Verwey. Ook in deze brief is sprake van een verhuizing waar we verder niets van weten. De Haan bleef die winter in Amsterdam: de verhouding met het ouderlijk huis in het Zaanse lijkt zeer verslechterd. De uitdrukking ‘rat-achter-kat’ vinden we terug in de roman Ondergangen: ‘de kinderen kwamen echter temet nooit langs die trap, omdat ze veel liever, rat-achter-kat, de kluft afgingen’ (p. 8). |
