Upon what you say in your letter that it is reported

that our not having paid our quota to the Empress makes the Austrians be without money, I must tell you that the contrary is true, and that not only we have paid our quota, but we have even advanced our quota, and part of that of England, before the convention was signed¹⁾. To-day Mr. Gilles has been named Pensionary. To-morrow he will receive the message from the States, and we shall see if he will accept or not. I suppose he will, tho' he may make some difficulty at first......
