......I have not time to enter into any détail to day, tho' I should else have matter enough to entertain you with, if you love bad news. For I know nothing good from any part. The very worst of all is at home, both with you, and with us. If there was spirit and resolution, the exterior evils would be much less formidable. I am informed that it is maliciously set about in England that the Bavarian negociation²⁾ is at a stand, because the Dutch won't come into it; and that else England is ready. I only beg of you to believe upon my word that the contrary is true......
