I am glad to hear the news of the taking of Cape Breton³⁾. I hope it will rouse the national spirit and produce a more vigorous campaign. I hope too that it will make a diversion to the clamours against allys which, as bad as ever they may be, nay tho' they were worse than they are, England can never do without. I wish you heard the old Greffier talk on this topick, and of the consequences of what is called des principes isolés. He is the only one I converse with here, of whom I never heard nonsense......
