Den Haag, 26 Jan. 1745.
The easterly wind keeps us without letters from England, at a time when one would most wish to receive 'em regularly: besides that the delay of Lord Chesterfield's voyage putts a stop to all the business here, that requires the most haste. In the meanwhile we are near the end of January, without anything being fixed or regulated for the operations of a compaign, which will certainly begin on the side of the French, before two months are at an end. I have heard people who have seen the two last wars, say that the operations of the ensuing campaign was then the first thing in deliberation at the end of each campaign. And I doubt whether things will go better than they did then.
