Den Haag, 24 Nov. 1744.
The old greffier has resolved to lay down his post, after having assisted the deliberations of the States General now sixty four years. He intends to execute this design tomorrow, and is not to be dissuaded. His dimission will not augment the credit of our government. It will be an irreparable loss. But I cannot condemn nor blame the Greffier, for executing a resolution, which appears sudden to many but which he has spoke to me in private of continually in these two or three last years.
