Den Haag, 10 April 1744.

......The Declaration of war has not hitherto produced the effect one might reasonably have expected from it. And I am quite sure that many flatter themselves still with the hopes of keeping out of a war - - I writ you the true reason in the letter I sent by Thornbury - -²⁾. If ever there was a mad or extravagant thought in the world, t'is this. Next week will, I hope make us wiser; for I don't doubt of events happening, which will force people to act in spite of their teeth. Boetselaer at last goes over. I beg you would be civil to him. I cannot say anything upon what he is going about, but shall be glad to know, what is said of him. I reckon Hop³⁾ will look very sowe at him.
