I wish I could trust to the paper all I learnt there (in Amsterdam) in the three days I passed there, among some of the chief merchants. They are informed of affairs and characters beyond what one should imagine, and consequently do justice to every one. The despotism of their Burgomasters is so great that if a private man has any affair against a Burgomaster, or any dispute de meo et tuo, not any lawyer in town will serve him against the Burgomaster, because he is sure that the Magistrate will be revenged on him or his children. So that in every thing relating to property, there is no justice against a Burgomaster. Now I leave you to judge the rest. This the people in the government call liberty, and so t'is for them, for they do whatever they please. But pray what is it for those who are not in the government, but tyranny and oppression? And yet this is nothing to what I know, but cannot write......
