All my former charmers absent. I knew it before going. A new one; the lovely Albertine⁶¹⁸..... A child when I last saw her; surely a fine young lady now.

Her tender eye now languishes,
Now flashes with delight.⁶¹⁹

Hair of the finest auburn. Transparent complexion. Lovely blushes. Sweet voice from crimson lips and through pearlwhite well set teeth. Good heaven! is it not a pity to think that the poor girl sooner or later must be the prey of consumption. With all her charms she looks exceedingly hectic, and destined to the complaint her dear mother died of. The lovely thing, alas, will pine away like she. Uncle Toby, in seeing her, as I do now, might have exclaimed: ‘She shall not, by God -’⁶²⁰
