De terugkeer van ZarathoestraZarathoestra is bekend vanwege zijn betekenis voor de westerse (cultuur) geschiedenis. Hij was een Perzische profeet uit de dertiende en veertiende eeuw voor Christus die visioenen kreeg van Ahura Mazda. Deze godheid introduceerde een absolute scheiding tussen goed en kwaad. De wereld van het goede komt Ahura Mazda toe, dat is een wereld van het licht, de waarheid en het reine. De wereld van het kwade is de wereld van de boze god Angra Mainyu en wordt gekenmerkt door duisternis, leugen en onreinheid. De beide goden vechten sinds lang een strijd uit en dit verklaart waarom er op aarde zoveel oorlog, strijd en ellende is (Angra Mainyu is aan de winnende hand), maar ook waarom het vaak goed gaat met de wereld (Ahura Mazda is succesvol). Deze strijd wordt ook in elk mens uitgevochten. Het gaat dan om het gewetensconflict waarbij een demon het individu influistert het kwade te doen, en een engel oproept het kwade vooral niet te doen. de boze god wil behoren. Volgens de profetieën van Zarathoestra zal op het einde der tijden het leger van Ahura Mazda overwinnen. De doden zullen verrijzen en diegenen die aan de zijde van Ahura Mazda hebben gestreden zullen naar het paradijs gaan, terwijl diegenen die vooral de kwade God hebben gevolgd voor eeuwig in de poel des verderfs zullen belanden. Deze gedachten (in concreto: de strijd tussen goed en kwaad waarbij het goede zal overwinnen; de wederopstanding; en de triage in functie van wie goed of kwaad heeft geleefd) vinden we duidelijk terug bij de drie grote westerse godsdiensten (jodendom, christendom, islam), waardoor de invloed van Zarathoestra op de Westerse cultuur nauwelijks kan worden overschat. Wie deze betekenis op waarde heeft geschat, is Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900), de Duitse filosoof die in zijn Aldus sprak ZarathoestraGa naar eind2 Zarathoestra opvoert om hem een nieuwe waarheid te laten verkondigen - een waarheid waarvan Nietzsche hoopt dat die evenveel invloed zal hebben. De Zarathoestra van Nietzsche heeft niet veel op met de gemiddelde mens, die hij beschouwt als een evolutionair tussenstadium: ergens tussen aap en übermensch. Nietzsche zet de übermensch concreet af tegen wat hij ‘de laatste mens’ noemt, een mens die geen idealen meer heeft en alleen nog maar reageert op prikkels afkomstig van de traditie, het geloof, het gezag, de consumptie, enzovoort. De laatste mens is geen individu meer, omdat iedereen hetzelfde wil en uiteindelijk hetzelfde is. Mensen zijn niet langer in staat om scheppend boven zichzelf uit te stijgen en voor zichzelf te bepalen hoe ze in de wereld willen staan. De Zarathoestra van Nietzsche pleit dus voor minder kuddegeest en voor de kracht zichzelf los te maken uit de greep van klassieke (waarden)systemen, teneinde zelf te bepalen volgens welke waarden te leven. Mensen, zo stelt Nietzsche bij monde van Zarathoestra, moeten hun ‘lot’ realiseren (iets dat ze niet vrij gekozen hebben, zoals bepaalde omstandigheden, maar ook het eigen karakter of de eigen fysiologie) en zich niet verschansen achter allerhande metafysische concepten (bijvoorbeeld God) of morele conventies en sociale instituties omdat die nu eenmaal geen recht doen aan de individualiteit van elk mens. Nietzsche heeft het over de amor fati waarbij het individu zijn lot volledig affirmeert omdat hij begrijpt dat het lot hem en niemand anders toebehoort.Ga naar eind3 Dit individu beklaagt er zich niet over noch berust hij er zomaar in, maar hij heeft het lot lief en wil zijn leven dan ook niet ondergeschikt maken aan een algemene moraal of sociaal-politiek waardesysteem. De übermensch wil zijn lot als de enige morele maatstaf van het leven beschouwen, tot in de eeuwigheid, teneinde werkelijk te kunnen worden wie hij eigenlijk is. In het vlugschrift uit 1919 laat Hesse de figuur van Zarathoestra opnieuw aan het woord en in een aantal brieven reflecteert hij over wat en waarom hij die figuur heeft opgevoerd. op het moment dat Duitsland de oorlog heeft verloren en de jongeren zich de vraag stellen wat ze moeten doen en waarin ze moeten geloven. De tekst wordt aanvankelijk anoniem gepresenteerd omdat Hesse de jeugd niet wil wantrouwig maken als zij meteen had geweten wie de (toen al beroemde) schrijver van dat werk was (blz. 53-54). Zijn woorden, zo stelt Hesse het, moeten op een onbevangen wijze worden getoetst aan de gedachten en gevoelens van de jeugd. Op veel bijval kunnen Zarathoestra's gedachten echter niet rekenen. Immers, nadat bekend wordt wie de schrijver is, ontvangt Hesse heel wat brieven van jongeren uit politiek reactionaire en extreem-nationalistische hoek. Uit die reacties blijkt unisono dat ze hem verachten, dat hij voor hen dood is en enkel nog als voorwerp van spot zou dienen. De jongeren spreken over de ‘heilige tuinen van het Duitse idealisme, van het Duitse geloof en van de Duitse trouw’ (blz. 56) en verwijten Hesse veel te ‘pacifistisch’, ‘geromantiseerd’ en simpelweg ‘onduits’ te zijn. De vele brieven moeten Hesse hebben verontrust. Hij bevroedt er tendensen in die, zouden ze tot volle ontwikkeling komen, gevaarlijk zijn ‘voor de geest en voor het leven’ (blz. 56). | |
Zarathoestra's boodschapHesse ontkent dat hij qua inhoud, toon en stijl Nietzsches Zarathoestra heeft geïmiteerd, hoogstens zou zijn Zarathoestra erop geïnspireerd zijn. Hesse geeft zelfs aan dat hij eigenlijk pas na het schrijven besefte dat er gelijkenissen waren met Nietzsches protagonist (blz. 51). Eerder dan tot de gedachten en tot zijn werk zou Hesse vooral zijn aangetrokken tot Nietzsche als mens wiens moed, geest en manhaftigheid hij prijst. Wat daar ook van moge zijn, het is vrij duidelijk dat in Hesses Zarathoestra-geschrift - maar ook in diens ander werk - Nietzsche in het souffleervak zit. De stijl van Hesse doet wat pastoraal aan - iets wat ook in het nawoord door Volker wordt opgemerktGa naar eind4 - en dat zal ongetwijfeld voor de moderne lezer wat moeilijk liggen, maar een eeuw terug was het dat niet en we durven zeggen dat wie er zich voor openstelt zinnen zal aantreffen die ongemeen zacht en mooi klinken. Anders dan het geval is met Nietzsche die zijn Zarathoestra poëtisch maar ook erg scherp doet klinken (Nietzsche blijft uiteindelijk toch vooral de filosoof die met de hamer zijn waarheden declameert), oreert Hesses Zarathoestra op gedempte wijze en formuleert hij niks dan pastelachtige woordenslierten. Zarathoestra spreekt als met een stem waarvan hij zelf zegt dat ‘die niet van mensen komt, maar van sterren of goden of, nog beter, als een stem, die iedereen in zijn eigen hart hoort, in uren waar God bij hem is’ (blz. 13). dervragen. Concreet spoort hij de jongeren aan om identitair te ontwaken en werkelijk volwassen te worden. Dat kan alleen wanneer zij de ‘godheid’ in zichzelf zoeken. Die godheid wordt door Zarathoestra geduid als ‘het lot’ - de knipoog naar Nietzsche kan natuurlijk niet onopgemerkt blijven. Leer, dat het lot niet van afgoden komt, dan zullen jullie ook eindelijk leren, dat er geen afgoden en goden zijn! Zoals in het lichaam van een vrouw het kind groeit, zo groeit het lot in het lichaam van ieder mens, of als je wilt, kun je ook zeggen: in zijn geest of in zijn ziel. Het is hetzelfde. En zoals de vrouw een is met haar kind en haar kind lief heeft en niets beters in de wereld kent dan haar kind - zo zullen jullie je lot leren lief hebben, niets beters op de wereld kennen dan jullie lot. Het zal jullie god zijn, want jullie zelf zullen jullie goden zijn. Als het lot van buiten komt, doodt het je, zoals de pijl het wild doodt. Als het lot van binnen en uit jezelf komt, maakt het je sterk en maakt het je tot een god. (blz. 15) Het lot vinden en in de ogen kijken, zo stelt Zarathoestra, gaat veelal met lijden en eenzaamheid gepaard en velen vluchten daarvoor - iets dat hij als een daad van lafheid en zelfverachting kwalificeert. ‘Uitverkoren zijn jullie, in het lijden je zelf te worden, in de pijn je eigen adem en je eigen hartslag terug te winnen, die jullie hadden verloren. Uitverkoren zijn jullie om sterrenlucht te ademen en uit kinderen mannen te worden’. (blz. 31) Net zoals men een schilderij in vele kaders kan hangen, zo ook kan men een zelfde gedachte in verschillende zinnen uitdrukken. Dat de jongeren (en bij uitbreiding de mens) de God in zichzelf moeten zoeken, is Zarathoestra's leidmotief. Wie wat met het werk van Hesse vertrouwd is, begrijpt dat dit eigenlijk voor zijn volledige oeuvre geldt. Men hoeft maar een boek van Hesse ter hand te nemen en een willekeurige pagina te lezen, lang zal het niet duren alvorens men het leidmotief zal zien verschijnen. In Hesses magnum opus Kralenspel lezen we bijvoorbeeld: Je moet ook helemaal niet naar een volmaakte leer verlangen maar naar vervolmaking van je zelf. De godheid is in jou, niet in begrippen en boeken. De waarheid wordt geleefd, niet gedoceerd. Wees voorbereid op innerlijke strijd [...]’.Ga naar eind5 In Demian klinkt het zo: Het ware beroep voor iedereen was slechts dat ene: zichzelf vinden. [...] Al het andere was half, was poging tot ontvluchting, was een vlucht terug naar de ideale toestand van opgaan in de massa, was aanpassing en angst voor het eigen innerlijk.Ga naar eind6 | |

Ook in zijn vele brieven (Hesse zou er gedurende zijn leven zo ongeveer drieduizend geschreven hebben) wordt het leidmotief in een schier eindeloze variatie herhaald - illustratief daarvoor is een collectie van brieven die recent werden samengebracht onder de titel ‘Het is je plicht mens te worden’Ga naar eind7 Deze attitude van het niet verzaken aan het eigen lot, is wat Hesse niet opmerkt bij de Duitse jeugd tijdens het Interbellum. Concreet lijken Zarathoestra's gedachten tot een drietal nauw aan elkaar verwante waarschuwingen te kunnen worden herleid. Zo waarschuwt hij tegen onderdanigheid, dadendrang, projectie en intellectuele oneerlijkheid. In de drie onderstaande paragrafen gaan we kort op elk van die waarschuwingen in. | |
OnderdanigheidZarathoestra waarschuwt voor een nieuwe terugval in de onderdanige mentaliteit die de Eerste Wereldoorlog mogelijk heeft gemaakt. Hij stelt dat de jeugd zich al te graag horig maakt aan demagogen die er niet op uit zijn de Duitse overlevenden naar de eigen godheid te laten zoeken. Jongeren laten zich te gemakkelijk mobiliseren door demagogen die van hen vragen een zekere (i.c. nationale) waarheid te dienen. Jullie Duitsers zijn meer dan ieder ander volk gewend om te gehoorzamen. Jullie volk heeft zo gemakkelijk, heeft zo bijzonder graag en blij gehoorzaamd, geen schrede wilde het doen, zonder daarbij de bevrediging te voelen, dat daarmee een gebod nagekomen, een voorschrift was opgevolgd. [...] En vergeet niet, dat daden en mannelijkheid niet in boeken en niet in volksredevoeringen groeien. Ze groeien op bergen en de weg er naar toe voert door leed en eenzaamheid, door graag gedragen leed, door vrijwillige eenzaamheid. Waar Hesse op zinspeelt is dat mensen zich al te graag door anderen op sleeptouw laten nemen teneinde niet te worden geconfronteerd met de eigen verantwoordelijkheden. Die hang naar gehoorzaamheid, zo stelt Hesse, leidt tot totalitaire regimes. Ook Isaiah Berlin nam dit thema op in zijn invloedrijke essay Two concepts of liberty.Ga naar eind8 Berlin maakt een onderscheid tussen ‘positieve vrijheid’ en ‘negatieve vrijheid’, waarmee hij respectievelijk doelt op de ‘vrijheid om iets te kunnen doen’ (freedom to) en de ‘bevrijding van allerhande beperkingen’ (freedom from). In zijn essay maakt Berlin gewag van verschillende opdelingen ter illustratie van dit verschil. beschikt over de vrijheid te doen wat hij wil zonder dat hij echt in controle is over zijn handelingen en beslissingen en daardoor eigenlijk niet autonoom handelt. Zo wijst Berlin bijvoorbeeld op de gevaren van het totalitarisme dat een ‘grote waarheid’ aan zijn volk oplegt tot op het moment dat iedereen ervan doordrongen is en ervan overtuigd is dat er op een bepaalde wijze moet worden gedacht en gehandeld. In dat geval gaat het niet alleen om de instigatie van het ‘hogere zelf’ in het individu, maar ook en bovenal om de creatie van een ‘collectief hoger zelf’ bij gratie van die instigatie. Het ‘collectief hogere zelf’ wordt voorgesteld als een soort paradijs, maar het kan slechts bestaan door de hersenspoeling van de massa, de exclusie van elke dissidente stem en de implementatie van een cultuur van angst. Elke liberale democratie moet daarom strategieën bedenken om niet alleen haar democratische instituties maar ook haar democratische cultuur te bestendigen. Dat is ook voor deze tijd een belangrijke boodschap, zeker wanneer antidemocratische partijen de kop opsteken, populisme sterk aanwezig is, de politieke participatie van de burger daalt, bepaalde groepen blijven botsen op structurele discriminatie en nieuwkomers misschien niet of minder bekend zijn met de democratische waarden of deze zelfs afwijzen. Wanneer angst of ressentiment regeert is de hang naar snelle (maar catastrofale) oplossingen apert. Hesse kreeg gelijk: kortelings na de publicatie van Zarathoestras terugkeer verscheurde Europa zich voor een tweede keer. Ook nu lijken mensen te worden opgezweept waardoor het opnieuw niet zeker is of de liberaal-democratische rechtsstaat wel overeind zal blijven. | |
DadendrangJongeren, zo klinkt het bij Zarathoestra, verzaken aan hun eigen lot door niet alleen blind te gehoorzamen, maar ook door hun obsessie met daden. De pijn over de geleden nederlaag wordt te gemakkelijk verdoofd door de vlucht in bedrijvigheid en activisme. De hunker naar daden, zo stelt Zarathoestra, wordt echter best omgebogen tot een vorm van zelfreflectie omdat het juist via die (vaak pijnlijke en eenzame) zelfbezinning is dat de nederlaag kan worden aanvaard en overwonnen door er een basis te vinden voor een meer vruchtbare toekomst. Het was pijnlijk, alleen te zijn - daarom richtte men verenigingen op. Het was pijnlijk, allerlei stemmen binnen in je te horen, die van jullie eisten, dat jullie je eigen leven moesten leven, jullie eigen lot zoeken, jullie eigen dood sterven - het was pijnlijk, daarom liepen jullie weg en maakten lawaai met machines en hamers, tot dat de stemmen verder weg klonken en verstomden. wilden alleen doen! En wat deden jullie? Eerst offerden jullie aan de god van het lawaai en de verdoving in jullie eigenaardige bedrijven, jullie hadden volop te doen, jullie hadden nooit tijd om te lijden, te luisteren, te ademen, levenselixir op te zuigen, het licht van de hemel te drinken. Neen, jullie moesten toch altijd doen, altijd doen. En toen het doen niets hielp en toen het lot binnenin jullie in plaats van zoet en rijp steeds rotter en giftiger werd, toen vergrootten jullie ook jullie doen, toen maakten jullie vijanden, eerst in je fantasie, toen in de werkelijkheid, toen voerden jullie oorlog, toen werden jullie soldaten en helden! Jullie hebben veroverd, jullie hebben het onzinnigste verdragen, jullie hebben het geweldigste gewaagd. En nu? Is het nu goed? Is het nu stil en blij in jullie harten? Smaakt nu het lot zoet? O nee, het smaakt bitterder dan ooit tevoren en daarom snellen jullie naar nieuwe daden, lopen jullie in de straten, rennen en schreeuwen jullie, kiezen jullie raden en laden jullie weer geweren. En dit alles, opdat jullie eeuwig op de vlucht voor het lijden zijn! Op de vlucht voor jullie zelf, voor jullie ziel. (blz. 21-22) Hesse heeft het niet met de dweepzucht van jongeren en hun ‘kinderlijk’ verlangen naar daden. Maar als ik jullie vraag, jongelingen: wat is het, waarnaar jullie volk zo zeer verlangt? Wat heeft het nodig? Dan zullen jullie zeggen: Ons volk heeft daden nodig, ons volk heeft mannen nodig, die niet alleen kunnen praten, maar ook daden kunnen verrichten! [...] Vrienden, dat, wat jullie volk en ieder volk nodig heeft, dat zijn mannen, die hebben geleerd, zichzelf te zijn, die hun lot hebben herkend. Zij alleen worden tot het lot van hun volk gemaakt. Zij alleen zijn niet met de redevoeringen en de decreten en de hele bange en onverantwoordelijke ambtenarij tevreden. Zij alleen hebben de moed, hebben de overmoed, hebben de goede, de welgeschapen, gezonde, vrolijke stemming, waaruit de daden komen. (blz. 37-38). De ‘daad’ waarnaar de jongeren zo smachten is het tegenovergestelde van wat Zarathoestra ‘doen’ noemt. Een daad wordt immers niet verricht nadat eerst werd gevraagd wat er precies moet worden gedaan. De daden en horigheid leiden van de essentie af, namelijk volwassen worden en dus in het reine met zichzelf komen. Door ‘trouw’ te blijven aan het lot en de eigen Godheid, wordt er een authentiek subject geproduceerd dat zich heeft onthecht van alle krachten die het tot dan toe tot een functie van de ander of van een bepaalde retoriek heeft gemaakt. De daad veronderstelt paradoxaal een bijzondere vorm van passiviteit die een totale overgave impliceert aan wat iemand heeft gegrepen. Deze passiviteit is echter van een volstrekt an- | |

dere orde dan de gemakzuchtige passiviteit en onderdanigheid die het subject doet terugtrekken in de veiligheid van een discours dat door anderen in zijn plaats wordt gevoerd en hem dicteert wat er moet worden gedacht en gedaan. | |
Verdringing, projectie en intellectuele oneerlijkheidHesse geeft aan dat wat mensen denken en doen veelal het product is van toevalligheden en buikgevoelens. Emoties bieden de impuls en de rede wordt al te vaak naderhand ingezet om het emotionele te rechtvaardigen en te camoufleren. Hesses Zarathoestra zegt het zo: [...] waarom zoeken jullie niet ook nu jullie pijn daar waar ze is: binnen in jullie zelf? Misschien is het niet het volk, dat je pijn doet en niet het vaderland en niet de wereldmacht en ook niet de democratie - misschien is het gewoon jezelf, je maag of je lever, een gezwel of kanker in je - en het is niets als kleuterangst voor de waarheid en voor de arts, als je je voordoet, alsof je zelf weliswaar helemaal gezond bent, maar je helaas zeer gedeprimeerd bent door het lijden van je volk? (blz. 18) Mensen doen te weinig aan introspectie. In een brief gericht aan een jonge Duitser, stelt Hesse: Het is echter voldoende, slechts één uur lang deze kinderlijk en weinig intelligente schuldvraag uit te schakelen en in plaats daarvan de vraag te stellen: ‘Hoe gaat het met mij zelf? In hoeverre ben ik medeschuldig? Waar was ook ik te luidruchtig, ook ik te brutaal, ook ik te lichtgelovig, ook ik te blufferig? Waar is het punt in mij, waarop de slechte pers, waarop het ontaarde geloof aan de nationale Jehova, waarop al deze zo snel ingestorte vergissingen konden steunen? (blz. 47) Mensen, zo suggereert Hesse, verdringen niet alleen hun eigen aandeel in de feiten, hun onhebbelijkheden, maar ze projecteren de oorzaak van hun onbehagen vaak ook op de buitenwereld en zoeken daar een zondebok voor datgene waarmee ze zelf (onbewust) worstelen. Hesse lijkt hier te verwijzen naar de theorieën over het onbewuste die in die periode opgang maakten binnen psychoanalytische kringen. Wat men bij zichzelf verdringt projecteert men al te graag op de ander, zo klinkt een gekend Freudiaans inzicht. In 1922, meer dan tien jaar voor Hitlers greep naar de macht, schrijft Hesse: | |

Je kunt van joden houden of niet, het zijn mensen, [...]. Dat je echter een menselijk ras eenvoudigweg voor het kwaad in de wereld en voor de duizend zware zonden en gemakzuchtigheden van het eigen Duitse volk als zondebok aanwijst, is een zo ernstige ontaarding, dat deze schade tienvoudig opweegt tegen alle schade, die ooit door joden veroorzaakt kan zijn. (blz. 62) Die verdringing maakt dat de Duitse jeugd intellectueel oneerlijk is. Zo doet ze bijvoorbeeld aan culturele cherry picking wanneer ze naar een ‘idealistisch-ideologisch Duitse aard’ verwijst en die dan ziet weerspiegeld worden in auteurs als Kant, Schiller, Fichte en Wagner - figuren waaraan ze zich optrekt en die ze vereenzelvigt met waar Duitsland waarlijk voor staat. Dit Duitsland zou worden bedreigd. Hesse merkt op dat die voorstelling toch maar best ‘plaats moet maken voor een oneindig ruimere, elastischer Duitse aard [...]’. (blz. 61) Mensen maken zichzelf iets wijs en houden vast aan een ideële fictie van een eigen volk en vergeten daarbij dat de natie voortdurend in verandering is en zich ook schuldig heeft gemaakt aan wandaden en oorlogszucht. Ook hoor ik jullie, vrienden, voortdurend zo luid over de hevige pijn en het noodlot klagen, die jullie volk en jullie land heeft getroffen. Vergeef me, jonge vrienden, als ik ook over deze pijn een beetje wantrouwig ben, een beetje langzaam en onwillig daarin geloof! Jij en jij en jij daar, jullie falen, lijden jullie dan alleen pijn om jullie volk? Lijden jullie alleen pijn vanwege jullie vaderland? Waar is dan dit vaderland, waar is zijn hoofd, waar zijn hart, waar willen jullie zijn genezing en verpleging beginnen? Hoe? Gisteren was het nog de keizer en was het wereldrijk, waarover jullie ongerust waren, waarop jullie trots waren, die jullie heilig waren. Waar is dat alles nu gebleven? [...] - Maar waarom spreken jullie, als je pijn hebt, ook nu nog steeds meteen van het vaderland en van het volk en van zulke grote, eerbiedwaardige dingen, waarover gemakkelijk te praten valt en die vaak zo onverwacht uiteen vallen en er niet meer zijn? Wie is het volk? Is het de redenaar of zij, die naar hem luisteren, zijn zij het die met hem instemmen of zij die hem uitspuwen en met stokken zwaaien? Horen jullie het schieten daarginds? Waar is het volk, jullie volk - aan welke kant? Schiet het of wordt het beschoten? Valt het aan of wordt het aangevallen? (blz. 17) Ook in de eenentwintigste eeuw maakt de idee dat de natie wordt bedreigd en derhalve moet worden beschermd opgang. nationalistische en rechts-conservatieve jeugdbeweging die onder het gezag van de charismatische leider Dries Van Langenhove vooral leden plukt uit de jongerenafdelingen van Vlaamsgezinde partijen. Via websites, crowdfunding en sociale media worden jongeren geworven, opgeleid, gemobiliseerd en geactiveerd in wat een metapolitieke strijd voor het behoud van Vlaanderen en, ruimer, van het Avondland kan worden genoemd. Deze Vlaamse identiteit wordt verbeeld als een culturele eenheid en als een bloed- en bodemnatie waarbij dus niet alleen een gedeelde geschiedenis, taal, arsenaal aan waarden centraal staan, maar ook de blanke huidskleur. ‘Als je naar de geschiedenis kijkt, is de Vlaming altijd blank geweest’Ga naar eind9 In datzelfde interview zwakt Van Langenhove deze claim af - ‘Wat niet wil zeggen dat blank zijn een voorwaarde is om Vlaming te zijn.’ - om vervolgens vooral erg vaag te zijn over die voorwaarden en wat precies de Vlaamse geschiedenis en identiteit is die binnen het conservatisme van Schild & Vrienden past en dus moet worden beschermd. Dat komt mooi tot uiting in volgend fragment uit een interview met Van LangenhoveGa naar eind10: Wat is nu die Vlaamse geschiedenis en identiteit die in uw conservatisme past? | |

die Vlaamse identiteit.’ Schild & Vrienden dweept met een vaag en imaginair beeld over de Vlaamse identiteit die bovendien op een exclusieve wijze wordt ingevuld. ‘Inclusieve identiteit is geen identiteit. [...] We moeten durven zeggen dat de islam géén deel uitmaakt van de Vlaamse identiteit. Kortom: we moeten wat meer “exclusief” durven zijn’.Ga naar eind11 In een ander interview klinkt het zo: ‘Het is niet omdat je hier geboren bent, dat je een Vlaming bent. [...] Een katje dat geboren wordt in een paardenstal is nog geen paard’.Ga naar eind12 Hoe S&V dit precies in verband kan brengen met ‘respect’, ‘godsdienstvrijheid’ en de werking van de ‘liberaal-democratische rechtsstaat’ is onduidelijk. Dit is dan ook de blinde vlek van S&V. De eigen tekorten (in concreto: afwijkingen ten opzichte van de mensenrechtencultuur) worden verdrongen en geprojecteerd op (bijvoorbeeld) de ‘intolerante islam’ die met de hoofddoek als symbool een islamitische kruistocht zou voeren met als uiteindelijke doel het zegevieren van de sharia in de westerse rechtssystemen. treft S&W eigenlijk een spiegel waarin ze zich niet durft te bekijken. De gratuite gelijkschakeling van de Vlaamse cultuur met de universele mensenrechtencultuur heeft dus het risico dat de zwarte bladzijden uit de eigen vroege en recente geschiedenis (bijvoorbeeld slavernij, kolonisatie, islamofobie) worden genegeerd en dat men ervan overtuigd geraakt dat ‘respect’ en ‘democratie’ alleen maar kunnen worden bedreigd door iets dat van buitenaf komt (migratie). Als de kernwaarden van de democratie worden ‘geculturaliseerd’ (exclusief toegeëigend aan het Vlaamse volk), dan neemt de aandacht voor antidemocratisch gedrag bij de eigen groep af. Opvallend en illustratief is dat S&V haar identitair ijkpunt ontleent aan de periode van de Guldensporenslag. Op de T-shirts van de S&V-aanhangers staat ‘1302’ en ‘Schild en Vrienden’ verwijst naar het sjibbolet ‘Schild en Vriend’ dat de Liebaerds iedereen met een Brugs accent dwongen uit te spreken. Wie dat niet kon, werd als Leliaert ontmaskerd en terstond gedood. Hoewel Hendrik Conscience deze episode als een Vlaamse hoogmis heeft voorgesteld, voelt het wrang dat een hedendaagse (Vlaamsgezinde) organisatie zich naar deze slachtpartij laat noemen. Van Langenhove romantiseert en trivialiseertGa naar eind13: Grappig, toch? Zalige naam. Iedereen is daar meteen door getriggerd. Die veldslag was de overwinning van het gewone Vlaamse volk op de Franse elite. Wist u dat vrouwen na de Guldensporenslag voor het eerst in Europa belangrijke posities konden bekleden? Ik vind dat een hoogtepunt uit de Vlaamse geschiedenis. En ja, daar ben ik trots op. De jongeren van S&V, zo zou Zarathoestra het hen zeggen, moeten niet te hard van stapel lopen en gaan best op zoek naar wat hen waarlijk drijft - hoeveel geven ze werkelijk om die ‘Vlaamse Jehova’? Is hun strijd en ontreddering misschien niet vooral indicatief voor hun onvermogen om te gaan met de frustratie niet over een identiteit te beschikken (Wat is nu toch die Vlaamse identiteit?!)? Wordt ‘het vreemde’ waartegen men zich zo kant niet vooral opgevoerd als de oorzaak van dat tekort en wordt door het aanwijzen van de vreemde als stoorzender daarmee niet meteen ook het fantasma van het bestaan van een volledige Vlaamse identiteit gehandhaafd? Als dat zo is, is het dan niet vooral zaak zich te verzoenen met het feit dat de volledige identiteit een fictie is, eerder dan de ander voortdurend als stoorzender aan te wijzen? | |

verlies van de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Hij houdt de jeugd een spiegel voor: ze is te onderdanig en gehoorzaam, te veel gericht op daden, te weinig door zelfkritiek en introspectie aangestuurd en daardoor intellectueel oneerlijk. Deze boodschap lijkt ook in het Vlaanderen van deze tijd nog actueel. |
