Vergeven en het wonder
De deur klikt een bekend geklik. De sleutel wordt tegen de klok in gedraaid en het mechanisme reageert met een routineuze opeenvolging van geluiden. Ik ken dit geluid. Dit geluid heb ik eerder gehoord. Gisteren nog, en ook de dag daarvoor. Elke nacht, sinds bijna twee jaar. Hoe dicht de muren van mij af staan, herken ik ook. Ik voel hoe mijn eigen lichaamswarmte wordt teruggekaatst door de muren, en hoe dichtbij die zijn.
Ik ga rechtop zitten en knijp met mijn oogleden voordat ik ze open. Ik verwacht een donkere kamer te zien, maar het lampje naast mij brandt nog. Ik ben in slaap gevallen met het licht aan. Van de voordeur af hoor ik voetstappen, eerst dichterbij komend, dan verder weg. Het geluid van een televisie ter afsluiting. Op het aangelaten lampje na niets dat anders was dan gisterennacht. Snel knip ik de schakelaar uit, omdat ik me schaam dat ik dronken in slaap ben gevallen en het lampje ben vergeten.
Ik merk dat het bed waarin ik lig anders staat. Een kwartslag gedraaid in de richting van het raam. Het is kleiner, het is bedoeld voor één persoon. Net voordat er geen licht meer is, realiseer ik me dat de lamp ook niet het bedlampje is dat normaal naast mijn bed staat. Mijn ogen wennen aan het donker. Ik zie dat het lampje op een kleine tafel staat die ik niet ken. Alleen de aanblik van de kamerdeur en de geluiden van de televisie zijn hetzelfde als normaal.
En ik voel dan de gelatenheid van het geleefde. Ik ben ouder dan ik dacht te zijn. Ouder dan de gemoedstoestand waarin ik gisteren verkeerde, toen de kamer nog normaal was. Met mijn eigen bed en mijn eigen ladekast en bedlamp. Ik woon hier niet meer. Het bed waarover ik vertel staat ergens anders. Dit is mijn kamer geweest, ooit. Maar hier staan niet meer mijn
