over de velerlei manieren waarop gender en seksualiteit kunnen worden beleefd en geleefd in conservatieve of traditionele religieuze kringen. Het roept echter ook vragen op over de keuzes voor, en de receptie van, de verschillende verhaallijnen, en met name over hoe die samenhangen met dominante veronderstellingen over religie, emancipatie en vrijheid. | |
Lelio's disobedience: vrije wil en traditieHet narratief uitgangspunt dat zowel door de film als het boek wordt gedeeld, is het volgende. Na het overlijden van Rav Krushka wordt zijn grote betekenis voor de orthodoxe gemeenschap in de Londense wijk Hendon herdacht. Als zijn vrijgevochten dochter Ronit onverwacht terugkeert uit New York, moet ze achter aan de rij aansluiten. Ze logeert bij haar jeugdvriend Dovid, die de Rav als zijn zoon aannam, en die nu getrouwd blijkt te zijn met haar beste vriendin en jeugdliefde Esti. De vroegere liefde tussen Ronit en Esti komt terug tot bloei, en zet hun driehoeksverhouding met Dovid op spanning. Bij een boekverfilming moeten altijd keuzes worden gemaakt: sommige scenes komen centraal te staan, vele andere komen te vervallen, aan de vele details en nuances van een boek kan niet altijd recht worden gedaan, en een filmregisseur heeft de keuze trouw te blijven aan de verhaallijn van het boek of de vrijheid te nemen de thema's naar eigen inzicht inhoudelijk vorm te geven. Lelio heeft de laatste keuze gemaakt. Lelio laat in zijn film Rav Krushka, vlak voordat hij sterft, in de synagoge spreken over de menselijke vrije wil. Alderman begint haar boek met de langzame aftakeling van Rav Krushka, vanuit het perspectief van Dovid en Esti. Lelio kiest er niet zomaar voor om het moment van het sterven van de Rav naar voren te halen. Hij grijpt in door de film te laten openen met een nadruk op de menselijke vrije wil in het al dan niet gehoorzamen van God. Dit is belangrijk voor de framing van het verhaal: op deze wijze komt het idee van vrije wil, keuze en vrijheid centraal te staan. Zo pakken enkele recensenten deze framing dan ook op als een belangrijke invalshoek van waaruit de film bekeken moet worden: ‘Disobedience is about more than Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams's sex scene. It's about freedom’Ga naar eind3 en ‘Steeds laat de film je nadenken over de vraag wanneer iets pure liefde, vrije wil of instinct is’Ga naar eind4 Deze laatste reflectie is inderdaad een boeiende vraagstelling. Wat de vraagstelling echter doet, is de focus leggen op het afbakenen van ‘pure liefde’, ‘vrije wil’ en ‘instinct’: wanneer is iets het een dan wel het ander? De vraagstelling stelt ons minder in staat om na te denken over de manieren waarop de concepten worden geconstrueerd in welbepaalde politieke, so- | |

ciale, culturele en religieuze vertogen en contexten. Dat is niet perse een gebrek dat de film op het niveau van de verhaallijn eenzijdig verweten kan worden. De vraagstelling van de recensent wijst evenzeer op de domantie van specifieke kaders die we vaak hanteren wanneer we kijken naar religieuze tradities en minderheden die we ‘traditioneel’ of ‘conservatief’ achten.Ga naar eind5 Traditie wordt daarbij vaak gepresenteerd als haaks staand op vrijheid, wat impliceert dat het uitoefenen van individuele vrije wil en het maken van eigen keuzes door diegenen die opgroeien in traditionele contexten bevochten moet worden. Zo stelt een recensent: ‘Deze film toont hoeveel inspanning het soms vergt om jezelf tot ongehoorzaamheid te dwingen’.Ga naar eind6 Ook al zijn de verhaallijn en karakters complex, de opvattingen van filmregisseur Lelio sluiten naadloos aan bij het begrippenkader van de recencent. Zo stelt hij over Naomi Alderman, die opgroeide in een joods-orthodox milieu in London, en die gemeenschap verliet: ‘Ze schreef zich vrij. Dit boek was haar ontsnapping’.Ga naar eind7 Dat Alderman de kringen van haar jeugd verliet, is een observatie die door Alderman zelf bevestigd wordtGa naar eind8, maar Lelio's gebruik van woorden als ‘vrij’ en ‘ontsnapping’ kennen een waardeoordeel toe aan haar vertrek. Ze impliceren dat religieus orthodoxe contexten moeten worden achtergelaten om vrije wil en keuzevrijheid te kunnen uitoefenen. | |
Lelio's disobedience: ontkering, lichamelijkheid en seksualiteitDit begrippenkader verklaart allicht ook de keuze van Lelio om Esti, de vrouw van Dovid, die de opvolger van de Rav zou moeten worden, zichzelf, naarmate het verhaal vordert, langzaam te laten losworstelen van haar huidige leven. Zij is degene die de eerste stappen zet naar hereniging met Ronit. Ze ontdekt dat ze zwanger is van Dovid, belandt dan in een gewetenscrisis, en besluit dat haar kind in de toekomst ‘keuzes’ zou moeten kunnen maken, daar waar zij die ruimte niet of minder heeft gehad. Ze vraagt Dovid haar te laten gaan, waar Dovid uiteindelijk mee akkoord gaat. De laatste scenes van de film tonen Ronit die terug naar New York reist, waar ze haar werk en leven zal heropakken. Ze neemt in de vroege morgen afscheid van Esti en Dovid, waarbij Esti ontwaakt van de zetel in de woonkamer. Haar scheiding van Dovid is naderbij, vertellen deze scenes de kijker, en dus ook haar nieuwe leven. Hoe dat eruit zal gaan zien, wordt door de film niet ingevuld. Dit open einde staat de kijker toe te overwegen wat het voor Esti moet betekenen om haar huwelijk, en de gemeenschap waar ze ruim dertig jaar in heeft vertoefd, te gaan verlaten, de eventuele moeilijkheden die ze daarbij zal ondervinden, en de keuzes die ze zal gaan moeten maken. Die openheid naar nieuwe stappen en een nieuw leven impliceert bij vele kijkers allicht vrijheid, maar wellicht ook existentiele onzekerheid en eenzaamheid. Zo | |

schrijft religiewetenschapper Lynn Davidman in haar boek Becoming Un-Orthodox over mensen die chassidische kringen verlaten: Diegenen die chassidische enclaves hadden verlaten, spraken met heftige emoties over de angst en beroering die zij ervoeren wanneer zij overwogen om de hun bekende wereld achter te laten. Als zij daaruit zouden stappen, dan zouden ze de veiligheid en zekerheid van leven aan de hand van een allesomvattend script, dat garant staat voor de levenswijze van de gemeenschap en een uitgebreid en gedetailleerd systeem biedt voor hoe je te gedragen in alle aspecten van het dagelijks leven, verliezen. Ze hadden geen scripts voor hoe je te gedragen buiten die enclave, geen ondersteuning, en wisten niet waar naartoe te gaan. Ze wisten dat wanneer ze zouden vertrekken, ze het risico zouden lopen alles te verliezen wat ze gekend hadden, inclusief hun families en de gemeenschappen waar ze toe behoorden.Ga naar eind9 Davidman benadrukt het belang van het lichaam in dit proces van wat ‘ontkering’ genoemd zou kunnen worden: als het tegenovergestelde van ‘be-kering’. Lichamelijke routines verschuiven, langzaamaan of drastisch, in die context van transitie - denk daarbij aan veranderingen op het vlak van voedsel- en kledinggebruiken, aangewende houdingen ten opzichte van de andere sekse, en menstruatieriten en seksualiteit. Met die verschuivende routines zullen ook de perceptie op en ervaringen van het eigen lichaam veranderen. In Lelio's ontkeringsnarratief is lichamelijkheid cruciaal: de verboden erotische verlangens maken dat Ronit op een vroeg moment in haar leven, en Esti op een later moment, besluiten om de orthodoxe gemeenschap en levenswijze de rug toe te keren. Davidman benoemt zowel een ex-chassidische als een holebitrans en queer identiteit en/of levenswijze aannemen als een vorm van ‘coming out’. In het geval van Lelio's Dis-obedience is er dus sprake van een dubbele ‘coming out’: als ex-orthodox én op vlak van seksualiteit anders zijn (‘I am a lesbian’, zo choqueert Ronit het hoofd van het bestuur van de synagoge tijdens de Shabbat maaltijd) of verlangen en handelen (‘I have always wanted this’, zo benadrukt Esti tegenover Dovid). Terwijl Davidman specifiek schrijft over chassidische joden, suggereert ze dat haar argumenten bredere implicaties hebben en ook kunnen opgaan voor 'al diegenen in soortgelijke transitionele situaties, zoals zij die hun huis verlaten (of het nu om het thuisland gaat, of religie, of het idee van een geaccepteerde seksuele orientatie) en zich vestigen in een nieuwe ‘wereld’Ga naar eind10 | |

Aldermans disobedience: ‘i'm still here’Het verhaal dat Alderman ontwikkelt in haar debuutroman verloopt in een andere richting. Ook in de roman hervinden Ronit en Esti elkaar, ontdekt Esti dat ze zwanger is, en reist Ronit terug naar New York. Maar de vervolgstappen die Alderman Esti en Dovid laat nemen, verschillen ten opzichte van Lelio's ontkeringsnarratief. Esti en Dovid voeren een gesprek waarbij Dovid Esti vertelt dat hij haar niet zal tegenhouden als ze zou willen vertrekken. Esti reageert met Dovid te vragen of ze hem ooit een beetje gelukkig heeft weten te maken, wat hij bevestigd, waarop Esti opmerkt dat ‘I am pregnant. We. We are pregnant’.Ga naar eind11 In het ‘wij’ ligt haar beslissing: ze zal niet vertrekken. Op de hesped, de herdenkingsbijeenkomst ter nagedachtenis van de Rav, nemen Dovid en Esti onverwacht samen het podium. Vooraan de volgepakte maar muisstille synagoge houdt Dovid Esti's hand vast en Esti spreekt, eerst woorden ter ere van de Rav, waarna ze verder gaat over de betekenis en rol van spreken en stilte: Spreken is een gave van de schepping. God bracht de wereld voort vanuit spraak, en zo bevat ook ons preken de macht om te creëeren. [...] Onze woorden zijn machtig. Onze woorden zijn echt. Dat betekent echter niet dat we moeten zwijgen. In plaats daarvan moeten we onze woorden afwegen. We moeten er zeker van zijn dat we onze woorden gebruiken, net zoals de Almachtige, om te creëeren en niet om te vernietigen. Er zijn onder ons mensen die hadden gewild dat ik was vertrokken. Er zijn er die alleen al mijn aanwezigheid ervoeren als een gruwel, die in angst leefden voor wat er over mij gezegd zou kunnen worden, wat men tegen anderen zou kunnen zeggen. We mogen niet bang zijn van woorden, van het openlijk uitspreken van de waarheid. Daarom spreek ik vandaag. Ik ben niet bang om de waarheid uit te spreken. Ik heb verlangd naar datgene dat verboden is. Ik verlang daar nog steeds naar. En toch ben ik hier. Ik volg de geboden. Dat is mogelijk, zo lang ik dat niet moet doen in stilte.Ga naar eind12 Alderman laat Esti hier ruimte maken, een spreekpositie creeëren voor zichzelf binnen de orthodoxe gemeenschap. De nadruk op het moeten spreken over seksualiteit is een modern idee, gebaseerd op de opvatting dat seksualiteit vrij bespreekbaar moet zijn, en holebitrans en queer identiteit en seksualiteit pas ‘vrij’ beleefd en ervaren kunnen worden als er een expliciet ‘uit de kast komen’ aan vooraf is gegaan. Esti's spreken over seksualiteit is echter niet in die zin standaard. Ze stelt dat spreken niet een absolute vrijheid is, maar dat spreken altijd weloverdacht moet gebeuren, waarbij ze impliciet stelling neemt tegen de lashon hara, de neerbuigende roddels, waar ze onder geleden heeft. zichzelf, maar benoemt haar verlangens die niet binnen de orthodoxe denken leefkaders vallen. Ze gebruikt de ‘waarheid’ niet zomaar om te exposeren, maar om haar aanwezigheid te benadrukken. Ondanks alles zal ik blijven, lijkt ze te zeggen, maar wel onder enkele nieuwe voorwaarden die zij formuleert. Met het verloop van het verhaal toont Alderman dat Esti's positie, en de gemeenschap in bredere zin, inderdaad zijn gaan veranderen. Sommigen vonden het spreken van Esti een schandaal, en keerden de synagoge, luid of zwijgend, de rug toe. Anderen vertrekken niet, maar mijden Esti en Dovid. Weer anderen waarderen Esti en Dovid net vanwege het feit dat ze blijven. Dovid wordt de nieuwe Rav, maar pakt dat op zijn eigen informele wijze aan. Esti wordt even vaak bezocht en om raad gevraagd als haar man: ze is bekend komen staan als een goede luisteraar: ‘no problem is too great for her ears; no trouble too shocking’.Ga naar eind13 Alderman laat daarmee het verhaal eindigen met een blik op de mogelijkheid voor kleinschalige maar betekenisvolle verschuivingen: ‘Certain things are possible. This, and this, but not this. Certain things will remain forever impossible. But within what is possible, there is room to live’.Ga naar eind14 Het zijn net die kleine veranderingen op het niveau van individuele positie, waardering en ruimte binnen de gemeenschap die levens leefbaar maken en houden. Soms kunnen die voorbode kunnen zijn voor grotere verandering, soms ook niet. | |
Lelio's Disobedience: religie versus emancipatieIn het vergelijken van de verschillende Disobedience narratieven, die van Lelio en Alderman, streef ik niet naar het naar voren schuiven van de ene als beter, realistischer of hoopvoller dan de andere. Beide verhaallijnen zijn op hun eigen manier plausibel. Net dat maakt het nadenken over de twee narratieven aan de hand van een antropologisch perspectief interessant: de verhalen zetten in op verschillende manieren van menszijn in relatie tot religieuze tradities, gemeenschap, gender en seksualiteit. Lelio laat Ronit en Esti allebei hun mogelijkheden en kansen beproeven buiten de orthodoxe context waarin ze een klein of groot deel van hun leven doorbrachten. Alderman laat Esti een andere weg bewandelen en haar zelfverstaan en levenswijze op een andere manier uitbouwen. Waar beide verhaallijnen even plausibel zijn, ‘doen’ ze beide wel iets anders in de bredere maatschappelijke en culturele context waarin ze werden uitgebracht of gepubliceerd. Ondanks de complexiteit van de karakters die Lelio neerzet, herbevestigt zijn ontkeringsnarratief wel de veronderstelling dat de joods-orthodoxe religie of traditie in tegenstelling staan tot vrijheid en emancipatie.Ga naar eind15 Niet iedereen waardeert het aansluiten bij dit veelvoorkomende kader. met een verboden liefde in conservatieve contreien’.Ga naar eind16 Onderzoekster van de representatie van joodse vrouwen in media en literatuur Karen Skinazi spreekt bovendien van een bredere fascinatie met religieuze gemeenschappen die conservatief of orthodox worden geacht, en wijst specifiek op een Amerikaanse culturele fascinatie met memoires van ex-joods-orthodoxe vrouwen. Zulke memoires, die zij ‘tales of oppression and liberation’ noemt, geven vaak de boodschap mee dat het verlaten van een orthodoxe of traditionele gemeenschap, of het achterlaten van de daartoe behorende gebruiken, een feministische overwinning is. Zo stelt Skinazi dat: Het is de pruik, ofwel de sheitel (of soms een tulband, of hoofddoek of shpitzle), dat het anders-zijn van Orthodoxe vrouwen zichtbaar maakt. En dit zichtbaar anders-zijn interpreteren vele mensen als onderdrukking. [...] In Joods-Amerikaanse literatuur wordt de sheitel voorgesteld als anachronistisch en onderdrukkend, mensonterend, en antifeministisch. [...] Behalve wanneer de pruik een middel van verleiding wordt.Ga naar eind17 De aanname dat orthodoxe religie of traditie in tegenstelling staan tot vrijheid en emancipatie is sterk simplificerend. Het is bovendien niet de universele ervaring van alle orthodoxe vrouwen en holebitrans en queer personen. De eerste kanttekening die moet worden gemaakt, is bij de betekenis van de concepten: wat is precies ‘vrijheid’ en ‘emancipatie’? Kunnen daar in diverse contexten verschillende betekenissen aan worden gehecht? En hoe worden die betekenissen vervolgens ervaren in specifieke situaties? Manohla Dargis, recensent voor de New York Times, gaat niet mee in het kader ‘religie versus emancipatie’. In eerste instantie gaat Dargis wél mee in een temporeel denken dat Ronits leven voorstelt als behorend aan ‘de moderne tijd’, en haar reizen naar het orthodoxe Hendon als een ‘terug gaan in de tijd’. Maar naarmate de filmbespreking vordert, bekritiseert zij wat ze ziet als Lelio's ‘secular frame’. Ze vindt dat de seculiere benadering tot uiting komt in de weinig invoelende voorstelling van het geloofs- of gevoelsleven van de orthodoxe joden - het gebrek aan inlevingsmogelijkeden doet de kijker zich identificeren met de seculiere Ronit, en minder met de dilemma's van Esti. In vergelijking met de andere recensenten, die de film positief dan wel zeer goed beoordelen, is Dargis streng en ze uit kritiek die overeenkomt met de analyse van Karen Skinazi: Disobedience is nadrukkelijk en vanaf het begin op de hand van Ronit, zodat het karakter geen mysterie kent, wat de kijker berooft van de mogelijkheid om tot nieuwe ontdekkingen te komen of te worden verrast. patriarchaat, en ze is zichtbaar onwennig tussen de orthodoxen. Ze staat er als de volmacht van de seculiere kijker, die wordt uitgenodigd om getuige te zijn van de kwelling van het geloof, maar niet van de potentieel meer onbekende, en meer ongemakkelijke, extase van het geloof.Ga naar eind18 Het moet echter ook gezegd worden dat voor sommige joodse vrouwen en holebitrans en queer personen het ‘religie versus emancipatie’-kader wel degelijk empirische legitimiteit heeft. Kritische onderzoekers in joodse studies en rabbijnen zetten dan ook in op, reflecteren op en dialogeren over ‘what Judaism is, what sex is, and who we are and could be’.Ga naar eind19 Andere onderzoekers observeren dan weer dat sommige orthodoxe joden het verlaten van de gemeenschap of de traditie waarin ze zijn opgegroeid, ervaren als verzet en toenemende individuele autonomie en groei, en daarbij aansluiten bij seculiere en liberale invullingen van de concepten. Hierbij kan opnieuw worden verwezen naar bovengenoemd werk van Lynn Davidman, die op basis van haar interviews stelt dat: Door te vertrekken, doen zij hun recht gelden op het nastreven van individueel geluk en controle over hun eigen leven. Het uittreden uit hun gemeenschap was de optelsom van jaren van vragen stellen, geen antwoorden vinden, en transgressief, rebellerend gedrag. Afvalligheid was een daad van provocatie, maar was ook een proces dat grote moed en zelfvertrouwen vereist.Ga naar eind20 | |
Voorbij aan de tegenstelling religie versus emancipatie?Aldermans narratief compliceert een gemakkelijke religie versus emancipatie tegenstelling. Zij laat lezers begrip opbrengen voor verschillende soorten van handelingsruimte, keuzemogelijkheden, zelfverstaan en verhoudingen met anderen, inclusief God, die menszijn en -wording kunnen vorm geven. Ieder hoodstuk begint zij met een citaat uit de Torah, Mishnah of gebed, dat wordt gevolgd door een uitleg van de tekst vanuit een traditionele invalshoek en een reflectie daarop. Met deze werkwijze zorgt Alderman net wél dat de lezer zich kan inleven in de geloofs- of gevoelswereld van de orthodoxe gemeenschap waarover ze schrijft. Ook Aldermans verhaal en karakters zijn complex en hebben empirische legitimiteit. Haar debuutroman werd met lof ontvangen, ook al werd het in joodse kringen hier en daar controversieel gevonden. Het werd gelauwerd met de 2006 Orange Award for New Writers, en de 2007 Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Award. Tegelijkertijd werd haar roman ontvangen door individuen in een samenleving waarin wel vaak ervan uitgegaan wordt dat orthodoxe leefwerelden niet goed zijn voor het welzijn van vrouwen en holebi- | |

trans en queer personen. Sommige lezers komen dan ook in verzet. Zo stelt deze recensent voor Shofar: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Jewish Studies: Ik bewonder Esti's moed in het opeisen van een stem binnen haar gemeenschap in plaats van die te verlaten, maar toch twijfel ik aan de levensvatbaarheid op lange termijn van een oplossing die is gebaseerd op het loochenen van iemands seksualiteit. Ronits oplossing lijkt meer werkbaar, in die zin dat het meer in staat is om haar verbintenis met het jodendom te ondersteunen, zonder dat ze zich moet onderwerpen aan normen van de religie en de gemeenschap, die haar beperken als vrouw en biseksueel. Die verbintenis is echter, zoals Ronit aanduid, zwak. I bewonder ook de romans poging om een verzoening te potretteren tussen orthodoxie en lesbianisme, tussen individueel verlangen en collectieve beperkingen daarvan. Dat de naar voren gebrachte oplossingen niet helemaal bevredigend zijn, doet niet af aan de creativiteit waarmee de dilemma's worden weergegeven, wat in feite waarschijnlijk dichter bij de realiteit aanleunt van diegenen voor wie orthodoxie en jodendom synoniem zijn dan andere alternatieven. Ik ben diep geraakt door de roman, en hoop dat mij een vleugje zelfgenoegzaamheid wordt vergeven wanneer ik een zucht slaak [...] en dankbaar ben voor het bestaan van liberaal jodendom.Ga naar eind21 De recensent prijst de roman vanwege de genuanceerde en realistische dilemma's die Alderman neerzet. Hij spreekt echter ook een vrij heldere voorkeur uit voor Ronits maneouvres, ten koste van die van Esti. Vanuit het joods-liberaal perspectief van waaruit hij schrijft, en dat hij benoemt, is dat allicht te begrijpen. Er schuilt echter ook een neerbuigende houding in naar de meer orthodoxe tradities. Het gevaar van een zelfgenoegzame seculiere of liberaal-religieuze positie is dat er geen oog meer is voor de ruimte die wél onstaat voor en dankzij Esti, en in mindere mate Dovid. En die nieuwe ruimte, en de daarbij behorende posities en mogelijkheden, onstaan op een manier die acceptabel is voor Esti en Dovid. Seculiere en liberaal-religieuze aannames erkennen zulke handelingsruimte en vormen van menszijn binnen orthodoxe kaders en leefregels vaak niet. Mijn insteek is hier niet een normatieve keuze te maken voor een van de twee verhaallijnen noch voor een van de twee vrouwelijke karakters. Met het exploreren en situeren van de twee narratieven heb ik eerder willen tonen dat in huidige westerse samenlevingen sommige vormen van menszijn vaak meer kunnen rekenen op begrip dan anderen, dat sommige vormen van menszijn actief kunnen worden aangemoedigd door aanwezige dominante vertogen waar anderen eerder ontmoedigd worden, en dat bepaalde | |

vormen van menszijn meer ‘leesbaar’ zijn waar anderen ‘onleesbaar’, onbegrijpelijk of onvatbaar zijn of worden gemaakt. | |
Aldermans Disobedience: ‘it'll be fine. i have faith’Ter afsluiting is het relevant om op te merken dat Aldermans Ronit complexer is dan die van Leilo. Alderman laat Ronit vanuit New York reflecteren op de (on)zichtbaarheid van joden in Groot Britannie, iets wat door verschillende onderzoekers werd opgepakt ter illustratie van de ingewikkelde positie van Britse joden: Het is alsof joden in dit land hebben geinvesteerd in stilte. Het is een vicieuze cirkel, waarbij de joodse angst om opgemerkt te worden interageert met de gewoonlijke Britse terughoudendheid. Ze voeden elkaar, met als resultaat dat Britse joden niet kunnen spreken, niet kunnen worden gezien, en absolute onzichtbaarheid verkiezen als hoogste goed.Ga naar eind22 Die ingewikkelde positie van Britse joden zou ergens het midden houden tussen assimilatie en verschil, onzichtbaarheid en zichtbaarheid, en spreken en stilte. Daarbij moet bovendien continue worden onderhandeld tussen verschillende aanspraken op identiteit: Brits-zijn, Engels-zijn en/of joods-zijn.Ga naar eind23 Donald Weber schrijft op de Online Jewish Book Community dat Aldermans debuutroman dan ook moet worden gezien als onderdeel van een culturele-maatschappelijke dynamiek waarbij Anglo-joodse auteurs vandaag de dag eindelijk van zich laten horen.Ga naar eind24 In deze lezingen wordt Alderman onderdeel gemaakt van een discussie over de positie en identiteit van Britse joden. En daar zijn goede redenen voor. Het vreemde is echter dat gender en seksualiteit in die discussie verdwijnen, terwijl net die thematiek zo centraal staat in Aldermans werk. Alderman laat Ronit terug in New York haar reflecties op joods-zijn koppelen aan seksualiteit: Beide toestanden - gay-zijn en joods-zijn - zijn onzichtbaar. Wat het interessant maakt. Want [...] je kunt kiezen wat je toont. Je hebt altijd de keuze of je ‘uit de kast komt’. Iedere keer als je een nieuw iemand ontmoet, is dat een besluit. Je kunt altijd kiezen of je praktiseert. Dat betekent, natuurlijk, veel verschillende dingen. Waarschijnlijk voor iedereen iets anders. Je kunt iedere dag praktiseren, of slechts af en toe. Maar als je nooit praktiseert, zul je nooit weten wat het voor je zou kunnen betekenen. Je zult nooit weten wie je had kunnen zijn. [...] Ik ben tot een conclusie gekomen. Ik kan niet een orthodoxe jood zijn. Ik heb het niet in mij, en dat heb ik nooit gehad. Tegelijker- | |

tijd kan ik niet er niet één zijn. Er is iets heftig en oud en teder aan dat leven dat mij steeds weer terugroept, en ik vermoed dat dat altijd zo zal zijn. [...] Ik zet mijn glas op tafel en trek een wenkbrauw op. ‘Het komt wel goed’, zeg ik, ‘ik heb er vertrouwen in’Ga naar eind25 Ronit's mijmering over de (on)zichtbaarheid van joods-zijn en seksuele identiteit of levenswijze gaat hier over in een nadenken over de manier waarop gemaakte keuzes en levenswandel invloed hebben op wat mensen zijn of worden. Het gaat ook over in een reflectie op de specificiteit van ontkering. Joods-zijn, lesbisch-zijn en al-dan-niet-orthodox-zijn lijken allemaal met elkaar samen te hangen. Aan het eind van de roman besluit Ronit dat ze altijd wel én niet orthodox zal zijn: een tussenpositie waar ze vrede mee heeft. Identiteitsvraagstukken en -dynamieken zijn ook Nederlandse joden niet vreemd. In haar recente bundel Ontroerende onzin laat journaliste Ronit PalacheGa naar eind26 een stuk of honderd Nederlandse joden reflecteren op wat joden in Nederland bindt, wie ze zijn en hun toekomst. Sommigen van Palaches gesprekspartners wijzen daarbij, net als Aldermans Ronit, vanuit hun eigen ervaring op het belang van kwesties als bekering en ontkering, en gender en seksualiteit. In zijn introductie op de bundel Jewish/Christian/Queer maakt literatuurwetenschapper Frederick RodenGa naar eind27 onderscheid tussen drie vormen van ‘queerness’: allereerst de plek waar ‘jood’ en ‘christen’ elkaar ontmoeten en de grenzen van religieuze identiteit vervagen en hybridiseren; ten tweede de ontmoeting van religieuze en homoseksuele identiteiten, waarbij opnieuw sprake is van de noodzaak van het deconstrueren van verboden en exclusiviteit; en ten derde de plek waar de eerste twee elkaar ontmoeten: ‘religieuze vormen van queerness en seksuele vormen van queerness, gecombineerd in hybride vormen van religieusseksuele identiteiten die zowel religieus als seksueel gezien “queer” zijn.’Ga naar eind28 In navolging hiervan kunnen we Aldermans Ronit en Esti, en wellicht enkele van Palaches gesprekspartners, zien als queer subjecten par excellence: op de snijvlakken van hybride vormen van net-niet-of-net-wel-helemaal bekeren of ontkeren, en op vlak van gender en seksualiteit anders zijn, of verlangen en handelen, kunnen de mogelijkheden liggen voor kleine of zelfs grote veranderingen. In ieder geval kunnen (meervoudige) tussenposities het leven soms houdbaar maken en houden - of in de woorden van Aldermans Esti: ‘within what is possible, there is room to live’.Ga naar eind29 |
