Gent Tuesday morning

My dear Paul⁽¹⁾,

To-morrow I must go and pay at the Post-Hotel. Could you not inform me, how much you give as a fee to the waiters, when the bargain [h]as been struck with the manager, service included? I do not like to seem a miser but on the other hand I may not throw my money away. You are sometimes in the same case, how do you behave? Last day I made a blunder: amongst the cards of persons who sent flowers, I discovered the names of Miles Fredericq. Last week Mde and Ad. called on me and I alluded to the flowers I got from them. The younger one set up a cry and told me, that they had not give[n] anything, that it was out of the question as they did not

even know, that flowers are offered in such a case. So I have been unpolite to H. and Nica and thank them now⁽²⁾.

(2) Op haar viering kreeg Loveling onder meer bloemen toegestuurd van de ‘Mesdemoiselles Fredericq’ (visitekaartje s.d., UBG hs. 3427 B (196)). Deze bloemen kwamen van Hélène en Véronique (Nica) Fredericq, de twee zussen van Paul. Loveling dacht echter dat de ruiker een attentie was van haar nichten Mathilde (1852-1921) en Adèle (1861-1927), twee dochters van Joseph (alias Alexandre) Fredericq, een halfbroer van Virginie (zie L. Fredericq, Notes, pp. 43-44). Het was een pijnlijke vergissing de verkeerde zussen te bedanken.
