148. De Haan aan Van Eeden, tweede helft april 1907
Amsterdam. 27. Palestrinastraat.
Beste Van Eeden, ik heb deze dagen zeer veel aan je gedacht, en ik had je wel eerder willen schrijven. Het spijt mij zoo zeer, dat de Eendracht niet goed is gegaan. Er worden vele verwarde verhalen gedaan, maar daaruit staat vast, dat je veel geld verloren hebt. Dat is geen kleinigheid, want zonder geld word je maar niet afhankelijk van het vuile volk dezer aarde. En hoe! Ik hoorde er twee kooplieden in den trein over. Ook in de kringen van de S.D.A.P. spreekt men er veel over. Sommigen hebben er leedvermaak van. Gelukkig zegt niemand minderwaardige dingen van je, zelfs de vijanden niet. Mij grieft dit alles diep. Ik wilde, dat het je altijd goed zou gaan. Het is ontzettend, dat je de menschen nog zoo genegen bent. Geene genegenheid is toch ten slotte veel gemakkelijker. Heb je nog goede hoop, dat er iets goeds uit dit alles voortkomen kan?
Ik wenschte wel, dat ik je helpen kon, maar wat kan ik doen? Het leven is heel wat bezwaarlijker, dan men meent.
Zelf ben ik op 't oogenblik verre van gezond. Als ik gezond ben vind je 't dan aangenaam, dat ik een van de Pinksterdagen naar Bussum kom? Maar ik wil afwachten, of je schrijft. Wat is 't al jaren geleden, dat ik voor het eerst naar Walden ben gegaan. Iedere weg wordt allegaande lastiger.
