De Haan aan Saalborn, 26 juli 1908Amsterdam, 26 Juli '08.Arnold, herinner je, toen je ma mij in de straat, voor uw woning, om mijn boek heeft gevraagd, heb ik haar afgeraden het te lezen. Je ma zal denkelijk gedacht hebben, dat die goede raad eene letterkundige behaagzucht van mij was, om hare nieuwsgierigheid te irriteeren. Je ma behoort tot het Publiek en daar houd ik niet van. Inderdaad is Publiek teleurgesteld en verontwaardigd over mij. Ik ben nooit teleurgesteld en verontwaardigd over het Publiek. De brief van Kloos mag je gerust eens komen lezen. Ik ontvang altijd 't liefst Dinsdags en Vrijdags na half drie 's middags. Maar ik ben uit de stad van Zaterdag 1 Augustus tot Woensdag 12 Aug. Kloos bewondert mijn talent zeer. Hij heeft stukken uit mijnen roman gepubliceerd. Ik ben niet boos op je. Maar ik vrees, dat je tot het Publiek zult gaan behooren, waarvan ik mij met volkomen bewustzijn steeds verder verwijder. Vale et salve, t.t. d.H. Laat dezen brief aan je ma lezen, als je wilt.
In het augustusnummer van Elsevier's Geïllustreerd Maandschrift plaatste Robbers een reeks ‘Fijne fragmenten’ van De Haan, waarvan twee fragmenten, ‘Eene vrouw in het licht’ (Johanna van Maarseveen?) en ‘Een blinde man’, weer in een subgroepje ‘Portretten’ zijn bijeengevoegd. Men vindt er motieven in terug, die men uit ander werk van De Haan kent, zoals het ‘oude huis, waarin ik op menigen tijd vertrouwelijk verkeeren kon’ op de Markt van Culemborg (‘Van buiten geleek het eene huis er twee te zijn’), dat sprekend lijkt op het huis waarin Johan van Vere de With in Pathologieën woonde (‘Van buiten was het een dubbeld huis’737.). Wij merken nog op dat het laatste fragment, ‘Over eenen prachtvollen idioot’, aan Giza Ritschl werd opgedragen. In het fragment ‘Gedicht op een leeuwerik’ werd een gedicht van dezelfde naam opgenomen. In De Hollandsche Revue van augustus 1908 werd het fijne fragment ‘Een houten klok’ in de rubriek Revue der Tijdschriften onder de titel ‘Een klok’ overgenomen. Ontwaking verscheen738. met een reeks besliste volzinnen. Ook bevatte deze aflevering van het kleine Vlaamse tijdschrift een fijn fragment: ‘Geuren’. In De Amsterdammer van 16 augustus 1908 publiceerde De Haan een bespreking van de verzenbundel Lueurs et flammes van Hélène Vacaresco. Daarbij bediende hij zich voor de tweede keer van het pseudoniem René de With, samenvoeging van de namen der twee hoofdrolspelers in de roman Pathologieën739.. De Haan vergelijkt Vacaresco met Giza Ritschl: beiden schrijven in een taal die niet hun moedertaal is, maar Giza ‘is gedichten gaan schrijven, toen zij nog zeer weinig Hollandsch kende’, zij ‘maakt krabbeltjes en nog geene teekeningen’, zij ‘boekt in enkele regeltjes een stemmingsmoment’, terwijl de Roemeense gravin ‘het Fransch voldoende beheerscht voor dichterlijke verhalen van grooten omvang en voor strofische gedichten van ingewikkelde bouw, waaraan Giza Ritschl zich niet wagen kan’. Giza Ritschl schrijft ook geen ‘Hollandsch proza’, Hélène Vacaresco schrijft wel ‘Fransch proza’: ‘Ik heb altijd gemeend’, aldus De Haan, ‘en het trouwens zelf eenigermate ondervonden, dat men gemakkelijker in eene vreemde taal gedichten schrijft dan proza’740.. Inmiddels had, op 15 augustus 1908, zekere H. van Loon, letterkundig criticus, een stuk ‘Afwijkingen’ gelanceerd in De Hofstad, ‘artistiek weekblad voor Nederland’, naar aanleiding van de ‘twijfelachtige weldaad’ die Jacob Israël de Haan het vaderland bewezen had met de publicatie van een roman die Van Loon ziet als ‘aanvullende en wel prikkelende illustratie bij Eulenburg- en andere schweinerei-processen’ en ‘geruchten’ van ‘verrotting’ die men de laatste tijd voortdurend hoort, ‘van alle kanten’ en ‘uit de hoogste kringen’, ‘schimmel’ die ‘woekert’ op ‘kostbaarste tapijten’: ‘uitgesponnen zien we dergelijke processen in de bladen’. In ‘een ander weekblad’ - De Amsterdammer - had een heer Van Raalte de kat de bel al aangebonden en het was er tot een ‘pennenstrijd’ gekomen, ‘een méér gevoerd proces’ over kunst en onzedelijkheid, en Van Loon herinnert aan een uitspraak ‘dat een dolk, al was ze nog zoo sierlijk geciseleerd, toch steeds een dolk, dus geváárlijk bleef’. Is Zola onzedelijk? Is de Venus van Milo onzedelijk? Van Loon is de eerste om de vrijheid van de kunst en de vrijheid van de kunstenaar te erkennen en te verdedigen. Maar er is een keerzijde aan de medaille: een boek, geschreven ‘met een ontroerende waarheidsliefde en een groot kunstvermogen’ (Van Loon citeert Eekhoud), kan ‘toch voor de samenleving zeer misdadig zijn’. Zo'n boek blijft ‘vuiligheid, hoe beklagenswaardig, hoe prachtig kiesch ook bewerkt’, ja, je vraagt je af, aldus Van Loon, of die verfijning, die ‘liefdevol-streelende overgave aan iets zoo walgelijks’, dat walgelijke onderwerp ‘niet nog walgelijker maakt’. Indertijd is De Haan, na Pijpelijntjes, ‘uitgesloten’ door ‘zijn toenmalige vrienden, de socialisten’; Eekhoud spreekt in dit verband van ‘duffe dompers’ en ‘bekrompen puriteinen’. Van Loon echter brengt begrip op voor de ‘walging’ van Tak en de zijnen: ‘de schurftige schapen moeten geweerd uit vrees voor besmetting’. ‘Wreed? Ja, maar nóódige wreedheid’. ‘Zachte meesters maken stinkende wonden. Deze wonde stinkt al genoeg’. Op 22 augustus vinden we in de correspondentierubriek van het Haagse blad een verweerschrift van De Haan. Het lijkt of de discussies uit de tijd van de Pijpelijntjes-affaire herleven. Maar De Haan slaat hier toch een andere toon aan dan de redacteur van de kinderrubriek destijds in Het Volk. Het lijkt of René Richell, de amorele en demonische kunstenaarsfiguur uit Pathologieën, hem zijn welsprekendheid heeft geleend: ‘Ik ben verliefd op alle Kunst en ik haat alle Zedelijkheid, vooral de tegenwoordige, die zeer onzedelijk is’. Van Loon moge de zedelijkheid boven de kunst stellen, De Haan vindt ‘de Onzedelijke Hooge Letterkunde nog lang niet rijk genoeg’. ‘Kunst is Genot, Zedelijkheid is Beperking. En daarom wordt Iedere Kunst door mij boven iedere zedelijkheid verkozen’. En: ‘De menschen zijn veel te Zedelijk en veel te Kunsteloos. Dat is om te stikken van benauwdheid’. Dan citeert De Haan de bekende brief van Van Deyssel, door hem in 1905 in de Open brief aan P.L. Tak gepubliceerd741., en geeft als commentaar: deze brief ‘is eene betrekkelijke verloochening van de Onzedelijke Letterkunde door Lodewijk van Deyssel, die haar Grootmeester had kunnen zijn. Maar ik wil de Dienaar van de Onzedelijke Hooge Letterkunde zijn’. Een passage over homoseksualiteit in De Haans ingezonden stuk werd door de redactie geschrapt: ‘Waar wij daar meenden, dat zulk werk, hoe goed ook bedoeld, toch onwillekeurig propaganda-werk doet en het tijd wordt tegen dié propaganda tekeer te gaan, hebben wij het geoorloofd geacht, het laatste deel, dat een verdediging in het algemeen bevat van de homosexualiteit en van de oude Romeinen, Leonidas' mannen en Eulenburg in het bijzonder, te schrappen’. Van Loons repliek bevat een opmerkelijke passage over Johan van Vere de With, de centrale figuur uit De Haans roman: ‘Wat uw “Hans” doet lijden, is tegennatuurlijk. Dus: ontaard. Wat niet wil zeggen, dat hij een misdadiger is. Wel, dat hij, als een misdadiger, moet worden uitgestooten. Omdat de gevolgen van zijn afwijking erger zijn dan de daden van een misdadiger’. De Haans opvattingen van zedelijkheid en kunst vindt hij ‘even mal als uw Besliste Volzinnen’. De discussie zal niet worden voortgezet: ‘Ruimte tot nader wisselen van gedachten kan ik u hier niet geven’. Op 28 augustus 1908 nam De Tijd de fakkel van De Hofstad over, in een redactioneel artikel ‘Gevaarlijke kunst’ op de voorpagina. ‘Moordenaars en boosdoeners van allerlei aard’, aldus het katholieke blad, ‘vervolgt men met alle middelen en langs alle wegen; geen moeiten noch kosten worden gespaard om de menschelijke samenleving te beschermen in lijf en goed harer leden; krankzinnigen sluit men op en men stelt niemand bloot aan de onheilbrengende aanslagen van deze ongelukkigen. Maar schrijvers als Jacob Israël de Haan gaan in ons vrije Nederland ongestraft voort met duizenden ongelukkig te maken naar ziel en lichaam met hun weerzinwekkend pornografisch geschrijf. Sterker nog, hun pennevruchten worden door sommigen nog opgehemeld tot producten der waarachtige kunst. Gevierd en vergood worden zij door een steeds meer ontaardend publiek. Zal dan nooit iemand den moed hebben de maatschappij te beveiligen tegen de misdadige waanzinnigheden van deze soort litteratoren?’. Een heel enkele keer, aldus De Tijd, komt een schrijver er toe ‘het lezen van zijn eigen boek te ontraden, ja, af te keuren’. En dan wordt Lodewijk van Deyssel in het zonnetje gezet als de bekeerde zondaar, die ‘eerlijk genoeg’ was om te erkennen dat zijn ideeën over ‘wat een letterkundig boek behoort te zijn’ zich na de begintijd van De Nieuwe Gids hadden ‘gewijzigd of aangevuld’: citaten uit Van Deyssels brief aan De Haan, in De Hofstad opnieuw onder de aandacht gebracht. Had Van Deyssel ‘dat gewijzigde en aangevulde begrip vroeger bezeten’, zo concludeert De Tijd, ‘veel van wat hij toen schreef, ware waarschijnlijk nooit uit zijn pen gevloeid’. Maar: ‘tot zulke bekentenissen komen er niet velen’. Op 24 augustus 1908, in het zicht van de beëindiging van zijn aanstelling aan school nr 84 per 31 augustus, verzoekt De Haan de wethouder van onderwijs in Amsterdam, de anti-revolutionair S. de Vries, hem weer op de lijst van tijdelijk benoembare onderwijzers te willen plaatsen; waarschijnlijk is er verband met het bericht van 10 februari 1908 dat hij voorlopig niet voor de vervulling van een nieuwe tijdelijke betrekking in aanmerking kwam. Op zijn brief vinden we krabbels van een ambtenaar: ‘Hij is in functie. Kaart nog niet terugontvangen’, en: ‘Er bestaat over hem nog een dossier meen ik, in zake benoeming tijdelijk onderwijzer’, en: ‘Staat hij niet op de lijst?’ en: ‘berichten dat hij op de lijst staat’. |
