Palestrinastraat.Beste Van Eeden, vandaag ben ik naar Giza gegaan, om aan Giza mijn boek ‘Pathologieën’ te brengen. Wij spraken ook over jou. De reden, dat ik je mijn boek niet heb gezonden, is niet, dat mijn gevoel van waardeering voor je verminderd is. Het tegendeel is waar. Ik zal je het boek morgen uit Amsterdam toezenden. Er zijn menschen, die mijn werk tegenwoordig zeer hoog stellen: Kloos b.v. Ik hoop zeer, dat je in mijn boek veel moois vinden moogt. Eisch echter niet van mij, dat ik zal werken van uit een levensbeginsel, dat niet het mijne is. Voor iedereen is ten slotte zijn eigen standpunt het eenige goede. Je wordt zeer vriendelijk gegroet door de goede Giza en door mij Joop Giza zegt, dat ik je moet schrijven, dat Iloes735. niet bij je is gekomen, omdat ze niet van school wou blijven, omdat ze dol is op de school. Noot van den zetter: wie 't gelooft, wordt zalig.
Op 12 juli 1908 zond De Haan zijn roman aan Arnold Saalborn, ‘blijkens de gedateerde opdracht in mijn exemplaar’ (zoals Saalborn meedeelt in Brieven aan een jongen, p. 19-20). Saalborns reactie anno 1957: ‘[ik] ken geen boek, dat mij zo gegrepen heeft als dit. Niet zozeer door de sadistische details, als wel door de stijl, die in zijn geraffineerde eenvoud en directheid door merg en been dringt’. Maar ‘hoe ik in die dagen reageerde, weet ik niet meer’. In eerste instantie zien we dat hij niet reageerde, want De Haan informeerde op 25 juli naar zijn mening. En toen Saalborns reactie De Haan niet beviel (zelf spreekt Saalborn van een ‘minder vriendelijk oordeel’, maar de zaak lag iets gecompliceerder, zoals men uit de overgeleverde teksten kan opmaken), stuurde hij de jonge vriend een onmiddellijk repliek. |
