Ik denk, alles goedbeschouwd, niet, dat er plaats is in uw tijdschrift voor mijn proza. Dus ik zou u willen vragen: geeft het mij terug. Weet u, dat Giza Ritschl voor eenen eenigszins langen tijd naar Hongarije is gegaan, naar het huis van hare moeder? Ik hoop zeer, dat zij moge terugkomen, want ik houd veel van haar en zij houdt ook veel van mij. Wij waren nog wel van plan samen bij u te komen. Dat zal nu niet kunnen gebeuren. Maar wellicht kom ik met den zomer naar Noordwijk, waar een van onze goede bekenden in een pension wonen zal. Ik zal het prettig vinden u dan te zien. Dat zal ik heel prettig vinden. Het gaat niet zoo slecht met mij als het met mij ging in den tijd toen u mij eenen troostrijken en hulpvaardigen brief hebt geschreven. Maar mijne gezondheid is slecht. Dat is een verbazend fijn voordeel, maar het geeft ook pijn en niet weinig. Het ga u goed, en uwe vrouw en al de kinderen, groot en klein. Nog vóór Pathologieën goed en wel verschenen was, werd De Haan er al op aangevallen, in De Amsterdammer van 21 juni 1908. Het opstel van Frits van Raalte over Pathologieën heette: ‘Lectuur over de perverse hartstocht’, was gedateerd op 9 juni en had betrekking zowel op de voorpublicatie in De Amsterdammer als op de voorrede van Georges Eekhoud (wiens naam door Van Raalte overigens niet genoemd werd) in Den Gulden Winckel. Er was voor Pathologieën, aldus Van Raalte, ‘bij anticipatie een zekere welwillende stemming gemaakt’ en daar wilde hij iets aan doen, niet door ‘een tegenstemming op te wekken’, maar door het lezerspubliek op te roepen ‘zich wel goed te bedenken, alvorens zich te zetten tot de lezing van een geschrift, dat zooals zijn titel ook al aanduidt in gemoedelijke waarschuwing, geheel behoort tot het gebied van de zieke begeerte’. Hoe beter zo'n boek geschreven is, aldus Van Raalte, hoe groter het gevaar ‘dat een of meer der lezers, die zich op de grens tusschen normaalvoelend en pathologisch bevinden, zullen worden omlaag getrokken’. Er is immers een ‘wisselwerking’ tussen leven en literatuur ‘in dien zin, dat het leven, zij het dikwijls onbewust, de litteratuur navolgt’. En juist een ‘pathologische ziel’, een ‘zieke geest’ grijpt naar zulke ‘beschrijvingen van het abnormale’ als naar ‘een gewenschte stimulans’. Wil Van Raalte dan het boek van De Haan door censuur verboden zien? ‘Neen, iedere geestelijke uiting, ook de zieke, heeft als verschijnsel ongetwijfeld zijn waarde’. Welke waarde heeft dan een boek als Pathologieën? ‘Uit de verwarde taal van den lijder aan een psychose leert de psychiater den aard der afwijking kennen’. Dan wordt De Haan in verband gebracht met andere schrijvers van ‘boeken over perverse begeerten’: Sacher-Masoch, De Sade (‘wegens paederastie en giftmengen ter dood veroordeeld’) en de ‘beruchte’ Lautréamont (en die ‘schijnt ook op niet zeer wenschenswaarde wijze aan zijn eind te zijn gekomen’). Van Raalte concludeert dan: ‘geschriften als bovenbedoelde’ hebben óf geen ‘wezenlijke’ waarde, als ze ‘de vruchten zijn van een gezonde fantasie’, omdat ze dan ‘niet reël’ zijn, óf ze hebben, als ‘getuigenissen van de eigen zieke ziel’, wél waarde, ‘als documenten voor psychiaters, justitieele geneeskundigen en rechters, die de misdaden, begaan door den abnormalen wil, hebben onschadelijk te maken’. De Haan antwoordde in De Amsterdammer van 28 juni. Ook zijn stuk heet: ‘Lectuur over de perverse hartstocht’. De Haan vindt Van Raalte inzake kunst ‘volkomen onbevoegd’. De Haan wil niét zijn ‘bijzonderen roman’ Pathologieën (ondertitel: ‘de ondergangen van eenen jongen’!) verdedigen, maar wel ‘de onzedelijke prachtige letterkunde’ in het algemeen: ‘anderen en ik weten, dat ik dit altijd en overal doe’. Hij laat dan, argument na argument, Van Raalte's betoog door de mand vallen. Dat Pathologieën de lezer zou opwekken tot navolging van het gedrag van de daarin beschreven ‘uitmuntende jongen met het afwijkende gevoel van liefde begaafd’, verbaast hem. ‘Ik heb geene vooropgezette leering in mijn geschrift willen leggen’, aldus De Haan, maar als men er met alle geweld een tendens in wil zien, dan kan die toch niet anders zijn dan ‘eene waarschuwing om zich niet te begeven in verhoudingen, die maatschappelijk niet duldbaar blijken te zijn. Het spijt mij: maar mijn boek is in dat opzicht juist een zeer zedelijk boek’711.. De Haan vervolgt: ‘wat wil de heer Van Raalte toch? Geen censuur. Zeer goed. Maar dan een index?’. Van Raalte heeft ‘bezwaar tegen homosexueele gevoelens in de letterkunde’, een ander heeft weer bezwaar tegen iets anders: zo zou ‘de arme kunst [...] aan iederen zedeondermeester iets van hare schat moeten afstaan’. En dan laat De Haan bijna een besliste volzin volgen: ‘de moraal behoeft niet kunstvol te zijn, en de kunst behoeft niet zedelijk te zijn’712.. Zou een schrijver slechts onderwerpen mogen kiezen die stroken met Van Raalte's opvattingen van zedelijkheid? Het is ‘eene meening’, zegt De Haan, ‘die men meer ontmoet, doch zelden onder kunstenaars. Ik heb er alle respekt voor, dat ik ook voor eenen welwillenden kruidenier heb’. Dan stoeit De Haan een paar alinea's lang met Van Raalte's opmerkingen over De Sade, die een sadist, en Sacher-Masoch, die een masochist geweest zou zijn, persoonlijke zaken die de heer Van Raalte, zoals De Haan het uitdrukt, niets aangaan en die ook niets te maken hebben met de ‘kunstwaarde’ van hun geschriften. Wel raadt hij Van Raalte aan, de gedenkschriften van Wanda von Sacher-Masoch, in de Mercure de France verschenen en daarna ‘in romanvorm uitgekomen’, eens te lezen713.. Aanstoot neemt De Haan aan Van Raalte's opmerking over de ‘beruchte’ Lautréamont (die niet ‘berucht’ was: ‘De meeste menschen kennen hem niet, en die hem wel kennen, stellen hem zeer hoog’) en de suggestieve wijze waarop hij de dood van de Franse dichter ter sprake bracht: ‘het heeft met de kunstwaarde van de werken van eenen kunstenaar niets te maken op welke wijze hij aan zijn einde komt’. De meningen van Van Raalte, aldus De Haan, ‘zijn van eene zedelijkheid, die de wereld tot een doodstil hofje zou maken’714.. In De Amsterdammer van 5 juli 1908 reageert Van Raalte op De Haans verweer: ‘Nog eens over de zieke liefde’715.. Hij vraagt De Haan ‘nederig om verschooning’, nu blijkt dat ‘naar de verklaring van den schrijver zijn aanstaande boek zeer zedelijk is en de leering bevat, om zich niet te begeven in verhoudingen, die maatschappelijk niet duldbaar blijken’. Wie had gedacht dat De Haan ‘alleen uit lust om een melaatsche ziel naakt te vertoonen, zulke afschuwlijke dingen was gaan beschrijven’, had zich in deze ‘grappige moralist’ vergist. Dan herinnert Van Raalte aan een strafzaak in Arnhem: een jongeman aldaar was veroordeeld, omdat hij ‘de rol vervulde van Pan bij een merrie, die voor weidennimf dienstdeed’. Wat zou men ervan zeggen, als deze ‘steenigenswaarde viezerd’ tot hoofdpersoon in een roman zou worden gemaakt door een schrijver, ‘zoo begaafd, als die welken we hier op het oog hebben [De Haan, dus], uit zuiver artistieke overwegingen of gedreven door humaniteit’? Dit zou Van Raalte ‘prostitutie der kunst’ toeschijnen. ‘Er zijn nu eenmaal dingen, waar niemand over spreekt’. De Haan riep: ‘arme kunst!’ Maar het is juist De Haan die, ‘onmachtig, haar normaal lief te hebben’, de kunst vernedert. Dan komt Van Raalte op de verhouding tussen het boek en de schrijver: De Haan meent ‘dat een auteur gevoelens kan verwerken, die hij niet zelf doorleefd heeft’. Dus zou Van Raalte, bij aanwezigheid van voldoende talent, ‘een roman! (ai mij!) kunnen schrijven die tot titel had: de jongeling en het paard!’. Hij hoopt dan maar dat ‘de schrijver over de onfrissche genegenheid’ zijn boek ‘ook zoo maar uit zijn hoofd heeft opgeschreven’. Tenslotte herhaalt Van Raalte zijn stelling en waarschuwing: ‘iemand die niet met absolute zekerheid weet, dat zijn liefdegevoelen geheel normaal is’, moet zich voor Pathologieën in acht nemen, ‘zooals men zich iemand met een afschuwelijke huidziekte van het lijf houdt’. En ‘geestelijk gezonde menschen’ mijden zulke ‘perverse lectuur’ vanzelf, ‘omdat die voor hen akelig vervelend en daarom den stuiver huurgeld niet waard is’. Alleen de psychiater interesseert zich voor zulke ‘produkten van zieke erotiek’, zoals Lombroso voorbeelden bespreekt van werk, ‘door geestzieke personen gemaakt in krankzinnigengestichten’. Er kwam geen weerwoord van De Haan716.. Wel publiceerde hij in De Amsterdammer op 5 juli en op 19 juli twee reeksen besliste volzinnen, waaronder de volzin die men van toepassing kan achten op de verhouding in Pathologieën tussen Johan en René: ‘Wreedheid in haat is wreed. Wreedheid in liefde is teder en mooi’717.. Op 7 juli 1908 wordt in het Nieuwsblad voor den Boekhandel aangekondigd: ‘Binnen enkele dagen verschijnt Pathologieën. De ondergang [sic] van Johan van Vere de With’, met de toelichting: ‘Deze roman, volgens velen van groote kunstwaarde, behandelt afwijkende gevoelsneigingen (homosexualiteit)’. Op 14 juli is Pathologieën verschenen (het kostte ingenaaid en gebonden f 3,25 en f 3,75) en een maand later wordt het vermeld als ingekomen bij het Ministerie van Justitie, ter verzekering van het auteursrecht. Het boek als zodanig bestond toen al enige maanden, zoals we weten: in februari had De Haan het al aan Eekhoud toegezonden. Ook was de uitgever, zich tekenend Meindert Boogaerdt in Rotterdam, allang uit Rotterdam vertrokken: eind april had hij zich in Zeist gevestigd718.. Wie was Meindert Boogaerdt? Heel veel hem aangaande is niet bekend719.. Hij gaf o.a. een bundel verhalen van Georges Eekhoud uit in de vertaling van Baekelmans720., en maakte bezwaar tegen het opnemen van het verhaal ‘In de danskrot’721., dat in 1905 al in het door hem uitgegeven tijdschrift De Vrije Tribune had gestaan, maar dat in de bundel moeilijkheden zou veroorzaken: ‘de serie zit in vele bibliotheken’722.. Men kan in de uitgever van Pathologieën niet zomaar een bevlogen voorvechter van de ontrechten dezer aarde zien723.. Hoe dan ook, Pathologieën verscheen tussen 7 en 14 juli 1908 officieel, met de voorrede van Georges Eekhoud en een curieus kort voorwoord van De Haan, waarin hij een ‘misverstand’ omtrent Pijpelijntjes opheldert: ‘Ik wil zeggen, dat het onwaar is, dat “Pijpelijntjes” door de justitie of politie is in beslag genomen’ (kennelijk was dat gerucht dus in omloop) ‘of dat de uitgave wegens andere redenen is gestaakt’ (en daar is dus de tweede versie of tweede druk van de roman bedoeld). De Haan vervolgt: ‘Het doet mij als letterkundig kunstenaar nog steeds genoegen, dat ik “Pijpelijntjes” geschreven heb, al is mijn leven als lid eener gemeenschap daardoor veel moeilijker geworden. Een tweede deel van “Pijpelijntjes” is door mij voltooid, waarvan de uitgave komen zal, zoo spoedig omstandigheden buiten mijn wil, dit toelaten’. Dit vervolg op Pijpelijntjes moest, in De Haans voorstelling, eerst althans gedeeltelijk in een tijdschrift gepubliceerd worden, voordat hij tot een boekuitgave besloot; De Haan dacht daarbij aan De XXe Eeuw van Lodewijk van Deyssel: die had in oktober 1906 al een gedeelte geaccepteerd, maar tot publicatie kwam het niet724.. De eerste kritiek op Pathologieën verscheen in het bescheiden tijdschrift Levensrecht725. en was van de hand van Ed. Coenraads, d.i. Pieter Endt, dezelfde die onder de schuilnaam Peer Waarnemer een gedicht over Pijpelijntjes in De Ware Jacob had gepubliceerd en aan wie De Haan destijds had afgeraden om Pijpelijntjes te bespreken. Hij kondigt de verschijning van Pathologieën aan als de komst van een zwaan in een eendenvijver (‘de eendenkom der Nederlandse letteren’) en hij blijkt zeer goed geïnformeerd omtrent De Haan en tot in details op de hoogte van diens tijdschrift- en krantenpublicaties. Eerst: de aanval van Van Raalte op De Haan: ‘de lezers van de Groene zullen zich aanval als verweer nog goed herinneren’ en zich De Haans ‘afdoende woord, dat Kunst met 'n patronaat van de zedelijkheid slecht gebaat is, hopelik wel hebben ingeprent’. Maar Coenraads valt over De Haans argument dat ‘uit de lotgevallen van z'n hoofdpersoon het onmaatschappelike van de besproken sentimenten’ te concluderen viel: zoiets accepteert Coenraads niet van deze schrijver ‘die niet gauw en niet graag voor konsekwenties in z'n schulp kruipt’726.. Zou Pathologieën op een ‘moderne indeks’ geplaatst worden, dan zag Coenraads daarop ook graag Schuld en boete, meesterwerk van Dostojewski. Zo kiest Coenraads partij vóór De Haans onzedelijkheid en tégen, en passant, de alsmaar kuiser wordende Van Deyssel727.. Ook herinnert Coenraads zich de strijd in De Amsterdammer om de ‘sympathieke moordenaar’, waarin De Koo eens zo voortvarend een ondankbare handschoen voor De Haan had opgenomen. Coenraads keurt het af dat die ‘simpatieke moordenaar’ uit de polemiek in De Groene als een boutade van René in Pathologieën terugkeert728.. Van Pathologieën bestonden, ook dat weet Coenraads precies, al vier jaar tevoren ‘kiemen’: het boek werd al in Pijpelijntjes-tweede versie aangekondigd, in 1904. ‘De geboorte van Jacob Israël de Haan's “Pathologieën” [is] niet schielik in z'n werk gegaan’729.. Hij vergelijkt dan Pathologieën met diens ‘ouwere broer’ Pijpelijntjes en voorspelt dat over vijftig jaar het werk van Coenen en Aletrino, dat het vooral van ‘milieu-beschrijving en 't inwerken van omgeving op individu’ moet hebben, naast de beschrijvingen van vriendschap en liefde en van de ‘psychologiese stemmingen’ van De Haan geheel verbleekt zal zijn730.. Qua stijl is Pathologieën, anders dan Pijpelijntjes, onder de invloed van Van Eeden en Van Deyssel komen te staan; van de Koele meren heeft De Haan een zekere verwondering om de gewoonste dingen731. en van Van Deyssel een soort ‘deftig-Hollandse mijnheer-likheid’ en een ‘gemaniereerde kijk op voorwerpen’. Bepaald hinderlijk vindt Coenraads een gelijkenis met Dorian Gray van Oscar Wilde. Coenraads' bespreking van Pathologieën is uiterst gedetailleerd; zo merkt hij in De Haans tekst een vogel op (‘toen vloog de fluitenier ruischend met snelslaande wiekjes weg’) en mijmert: ‘Het woord fluitenier heeft hier iets héél aandoenliks’. Maar hij vat ook met kracht samen. De Haans uitbeelding van gevoelens en ‘ziele-stemmingen’ heeft iets van het ‘grijs en teer-blond’ van doeken van Thijs Maris, zijn woorden hebben soms een ‘zilverklank’ die ‘maar heel even broos wordt aangeslagen’, maar dan komt het grote woord er uit: na het eerste deel, dat hij te lang vindt, ‘geraken wij in het tweede en derde tot 'n geweldige stijging en dáár eindelik worden we in de beste zin van het woord732. opgevoerd, zó, dat stijl en inhoud niet meer uiteen vallen, maar beiden ons stuwen naar toppen van hoge, onbekende bergen in fonkelgloed’. Het derde deel behoort tot het weinige ‘werkelik echte en literaire werk, dat in de laatste tien jaar verscheen’. De Haans ‘bizondere gave om het martelen van anderer psyche te geven’ (‘bekend uit de reeds vroeger gepubliceerde schoolscène’, zegt Coenraads, even refererend aan de voorpublicatie in De Amsterdammer) ‘raakt in deel III onbeperkte mogelikheden’, de ‘zielskomplikaties’ worden ‘telkens beangstigender’, de lezer wordt zelf radeloos en ziet ‘geen andere uitweg [...] dan die, door Johan gekozen: de voor allen onbekende’. In elk van beiden, in Johan, ‘de broze, breek'like jongen’, ‘gevoelig’ en ‘supérieur’, en in René, ‘de demoniese, de man van de paradoksen en besliste volzinnen’, ziet Coenraads ‘éen helft van de kunstenaar de Haan’. Ook de uitbeelding van René vindt hij ‘sterk en treffend’. De figuur van de Vader daarentegen vindt hij ‘geheel mislukt’: hij kan niet aanvaarden dat een vader zich zo ‘onmenskundig’ en ‘bevooroordeeld-eergevoelig’ tegenover zijn zoon opstelt. Interessant is tenslotte Coenraads oordeel over de ‘vriendelik-onbeduidende’ voorrede van Georges Eekhoud en de pittige slotzin, een besliste volzin van De Haan, toegepast op Pathologieën: ‘Mijn kunst is een in fijne facetten geslepen diamant: klein, hard en schitterend’733.. |
