Vergeef mij, edel en niet gestreng, dat ik mij nogmaals met een verzoek tot u wende. Inliggende brief zal u op de hoogte brengen. De schrijver van dezen brief, hoofd eener school te Zaandam705., is inderdaad een van de zeer zeldzame menschen, die mij genegenheid hebben bewezen, toen ik in onaangename omstandigheden was. Ik gevoel mij wel verplicht te doen wat ik kan doen om hem te helpen. Ik vraag u dus: mag ik u eenige der bedoelde schetsen ter lezing zenden voor uw blad? Ik begrijp best, dat u geen zin hebt om 26 schetsen te lezen of om 26 schetsen over één onderwerp te plaatsen. Als u er dus eenige van lezen wilt, zal ik ze wel allen lezen en er die uitzenden aan u, waarvan ik denk, dat ze het beste voor uw blad geschikt zijn. Wanneer de Groene er enkele van geplaatst heeft is de Hr Hartman eenigszins geïntroduceerd en kan hij wellicht eenen goeden uitgever vinden. Als de vertellingen niet goed zijn neemt u ze uitteraard niet. Als ze wel goed zijn, hebt u er ook wat aan. U verplicht mij zeer wanneer u mij den brief van den Heer H. met eenig antwoord terugzendt. In juni 1908 publiceerde De Haan een reeks besliste volzinnen in Ontwaking, met een opdracht aan Georges Eekhoud. Er waren ook twee volzinnen bij, die Eekhoud betroffen: ‘Georges Eekhoud heeft bijna zooveel voor mij gedaan, als ik zelf deed’, en: ‘Soms denk ik meer aan Aubrey Beardsley en Georges Eekhoud dan aan mij zelven’706.. Verder komen we poëticale uitspraken tegen zoals het veel geciteerde: ‘De natuur is niet kunstvol. De kunst is niet natuurlijk. Kunst is precies kunst, voor zooverre zij niet natuur is’707.. Over de onzedelijkheid, topic van het tijdsgewricht, lezen we: ‘Een braaf mensch veroordeelt iedere onzedelijkheid, die anders dan de zijne is’708.. In De Ware Jacob van 6 juni 1908 vinden we een verslag van een congres tegen pornografie709. ‘in het Babel aan de Seine’, waar onze landgenoten ‘een schitterend figuur’ sloegen: ‘de heer Jac. van Cleef [wilde] Jacob Israël de Haan's Pijpelijntjes als prijs voor goed gedrag aan de lieve jeugd doen toekomen. De auteur van dit frissche werk las er eenige fragmenten uit voor en produceerde zich met groot succes als petomane’710.. Een week later, op 13 juni, waren De Haans besliste volzinnen in De Ware Jacob weer aan de beurt. Een zich Abram Kanaan de Kip noemende medewerker citeerde zes volzinnen uit De Amsterdammer (van 31 mei) en voegde er commentaar aan toe. Wij maken een kleine keuze. De Haan: ‘Behalve om mij zelven, lach ik het meest om de andere menschen’. De Kip: ‘Wat zal die man 'n pleizier hebben, als hij eens 'n heelen dag niet uitgaat!’. De Haan: ‘Ik gevoel een dringende behoefte om iets tegen iemand te zeggen, maar ik ken niemand en ik weet niet wat’. De Kip: ‘En dáárom heeft Jacob Israël de Haan zijn besliste volzinnen zeker maar naar de Groene gestuurd?...’. |
