De Haan aan Verwey, 14 mei 1908Amsterdam, 14 Mei 1908.Zeer geachte heer Verwey, inliggende brief van Willem Kloos zal u op de hoogte brengen van de avonturen van de stukken, die ik u hier in zend. Wanneer uwe litteraire waardeering met die van Kloos overeenkomt, zoudt u dan deze stukken in de Beweging willen plaatsen? Zoo neen: dan krijg ik ze gaarne terug, niet later dan u mogelijk is zonder moeite. Ik hoop, dat ik geene onbescheidenheid begaan heb, met het zenden aan u van den brief van Kloos. Het zal u, goede heer Verwey, zeker genoegen doen te hooren, dat het mij, met een vrij volledig behoud van mijne zelfstandigheid goed gaat. Mijn werk vindt niet weinig waardeering, van hen, door wie ik gaarne gewaardeerd wordt. Ik ben weder als onderwijzer van de stad aangesteld, en zal, wanneer ik niet ziek word, dit jaar mijn doctoraal doen702.. Op 17 mei en op 31 mei 1908 verschenen weer twee reeksen besliste volzinnen in De Amsterdammer. Uit de tweede reeks citeren wij: ‘Het leven in eene groote stad is voortreffelijk en doordringend, omdat in eene groote stad zoowel de slechtste als de beste menschen wonen’703.. Men vindt de gedachte terug in Pathologieën, in het derde hoofdstuk van het derde deel, in een brief van René Richell: ‘De hoofdstad van een groot rijk trekt de slechtste en de beste menschen naar zich toe. Daardoor bereikt het leven er een uiterste spanning, waarin ik gaarne verkeer’704.. |
