Palestrinastraat. 25 October 1907.Zeer waarde heer Albert Verwey, ik moet nog eenige bezwaren inbrengen tegen eenen brief, dien u mij hebt geschreven en dien u wel vergeten zult zijn; het zijn dezelfde bezwaren, die ik tegen ‘de Beweging’ heb. Ja, dat is een heel mooi tijdschrift, dus het zal wel gauw leelijk worden of sterven, want er is in dit land in dezen tijd voor een goed tijdschrift toch geen plaats. Maar ik vind het bezwaar, dat u ontzettend de leider van dat tijdschrift bent. Ik zie tegenwoordig niet ver in de wereld, bijvoorbeeld niet verder dan de achterhuizen van de straat, maar ik geloof, dat uwe opvatting van leiden verkeerd is. U heerscht. Ik zit er dikwijls over te denken wat erger is heerschen of beheerscht te worden. Ik vind ze allebei slecht. Tegenwoordig leef ik alleen met mijne kunst. De heele wereld heb ik verloren, maar mij zelven niet, want het geeft toch niets, of men een wereld wint en zich zelven verliest624.. Laat de heer Gutteling maar oppassen, dat hij zich zelven niet verliest in uwe beweging. Ik lees uw tijdschrift altijd en aandachtig. Uw stuk in de Mercure de France heb ik gelezen625.. Ik vind het koninklijk van u, dat u beweert, dat het boek van N. v.d. Schaaf626. tot de meest besproken boeken behoort, terwijl u heel goed weet, dat er weinig over gezegd is. Dus die koninklijkheid is wel mooi, maar het feit is niet juist. Querido en de Quéridomanen zijn zeer boos op u, en ik vind, dat zij daarin niet geheel ongelijk hebben. De grenzen zijn wel vaag geworden, dat de heer J. de Meester van de Nieuwe Gids naar de Gids gaat627.. Het is wel prettig, dat u grenzen houden wilt. Maar ten slotte lezen de menschen voor hun genoegen. Er groepeeren zich goede dichters om u heen, ik vind Jan Prins de beste. Giza is de eenige, die ik zie en gaarne zie. Goddank, dat haar werk niets achteruit gaat. Het wordt minder natuurlijk en meer kunstvol. Jammer, dat zoovele dichters haar prijzen. Weet u, dat Van Eeden in haar huis komt te wonen628.? Ik heb hem in een jaar ongeveer niet gezien. Het is zoó, dat ik niet veel behoefte heb aan persoonlijken omgang met menschen. Ik ben mijn eigen beweging geworden. Vroeger was ik gezond, nu ziek, maar dikwijls gelukkiger dan voorheen. Ik werk nu volkomen zooals ik meen, dat goed is. Jammer, dat mijn verstand in den strijd een klap heeft gekregen, zoodat het dof is geworden, zoodat ik er niet zoo veel meer mede kan doen. Soms, als men mij daar gelegenheid voor geeft, publiceer ik wat. Een vast tijdschrift heb ik natuurlijk niet. Ik gloof toch, dat er een deel van ijdelheid in iedere publicatie is. Ik werk weinig: nooit meer dan eene bladzijde op eenen dag, vaak minder, dikwijls niets. U hebt vroeger wel verzen en proza van mij goed gevonden629., wellicht zend ik u eens wat. Maar dat duurt nog minstens een maand, eer ik een schrift vol in het net geschreven heb. Als ik schrijf heb ik het gevoel, dat ik in een hooge grot van goud woon, waarin mijn hand een goud puntje is, dat langzaam voortgaat. Als je loopt en de dag is heel mooi, bijvoorbeeld in het Vondelpark, dan ga je van zelf langzaam loopen, dat is ook een dergelijk gevoel. Mijn huis is stil en goed. Ik verzet mij tegen den winter en laat de ramen nog open. Wij hebben een eschdoorn, mijnheer Verwey, die is van blad tot blad geel geworden. Begrijpt u, dat er nog geen blaadje van afvalt? Er komt een roman van mij aan den dag Pathologieën genaamd. Nu ben ik moe, en ik kan niet meer schrijven. Met beste groeten uw Jacob Israël de Haan
Soms, als men hem daar gelegenheid voor geeft, publiceert De Haan wat: het is de bescheidenheid van de man die met zijn publicaties in de lift zit. In Ontwaking verschenen in september: ‘Nerveuze verzen’, opgedragen aan Remy de Gourmont en Hélène Vacaresco. En in Groot Nederland stonden in oktober ten eerste drie fijne fragmenten, o.a. opgedragen aan Cor Hugenholtz en aan Georges Eekhoud, en ten tweede de grote nerveuze vertelling ‘Het monster van China’630.. Er waren nu drie nerveuze vertellingen gepubliceerd: in Levensrecht, in De Nederlandsche Spectator en in Groot Nederland: een vast tijdschrift had De Haan niet. De redactie van Groot Nederland bestond uit W.G. van Nouhuys, Louis Couperus en Cyriel Buysse631.. In Den Gulden Winckel van 15 oktober 1907 werden de betitelingen ‘nerveuze vertellingen’ en ‘fijne fragmenten’ ‘nogal pretentieus’ gevonden632.. In De Amsterdammer van 10 november 1907 verschenen een tiental besliste volzinnen en een ingezonden brief van De Haan. Na De Koo's aftreden kende De Amsterdammer een langdurig interregnum. Maandenlang ‘dobbert alles op Rössing’, zoals Warendorf het in een brief aan De Koo formuleert. Er kwam geen ‘serieuse reflectant’ voor het vacante hoofdredactoraat opdagen. Even komt Mari Brusse, van de NRC (en Boefje), in aanmerking, maar men wordt het niet eens over het salaris. Het was De Koo, die een nieuwe kandidaat naar voren schoof: H.P.L. Wiessing, redacteur en Parijs' correspondent van het Algemeen Handelsblad. Deze maakt in Amsterdam een goede indruk. Pijzel weet een beetje zuur aan De Koo te melden: ‘De Heer Wiessing schijnt aan Warendorf te hebben gezegd, dat hij over alles schreef, behalve over muziek’. Wiessings komst werd op 22 september 1907 in De Amsterdammer aangekondigd en op 3 november is hij in functie633.. De Haan was ‘een van mijn eerste medewerkers’, aldus Wiessing in Bewegend portret (p. 21), ‘een erfenis van De Koo's redactie’. ‘Hij schreef in die eerste tijd van mijn kennismaking met hem - 1908 [lees: 1907] - “Besliste Volzinnen” in mijn Groene, de zelf nog zo onbesliste Jacob Israël, in het volgende, zoals ge mij zult toegeven, matig belangwekkende genre: “De dood is een ernstige banaliteit, waarvan men tenminste gedurende zijn leven geen last heeft” [...] zelfbeklagelijke goedkope triestigheden zonder horizon; maar er kwamen trotse uitvallen óók in voor, als dit: “Middelmatigheid is de premie voor een gerust leven. Zij is te hoog”’. De nieuwe hoofdredacteur was nauwelijks een week in functie of De Haan komt in De Amsterdammer protesteren tegen een plaat van Braakensiek die onder Wiessings verantwoordelijkheid verschenen was. In Duitsland was, in een reeks artikelen in het blad Die Zukunft in 1906 en 1907, Furst Philipp zu Eulenburg und Hertefeld, voormalig Duits ambassadeur in Wenen, intieme vriend van keizer Wilhelm II, door redacteur Maximilian Harden van homoseksualiteit beschuldigd, tezamen met een aantal andere leden van de zogenaamde ‘Liebenberger Tafelrunde’, een groep invloedrijke, maar weinig krijgshaftige figuren die elkaar als ‘Phili’ en ‘Tütü’ en dergelijke aanduidden. Harden sprak van de schatjes, de ‘Mignons’ van de Keizer. Hij riep op tot onverbiddelijke strijd tegen ‘die Einwirkung normwidriger Männerfreundschaft’, bracht graaf Kuno Moltke, verfijnde ziel en commandant van Berlijn, ten val en veroorzaakte de ‘exodus met schimp en schande der in één nacht in ongenade gevallenen’634. waar Braakensiek zich door geïnspireerd gevoeld had. Men ziet Harden een stuk van een groot gebouw omver duwen, uit de ramen vluchten varkens met Pickelhaube en militaire onderscheidingen. Een Duitse voorbijganger kijkt ernaar en zegt: ‘dàt is geen paleis,- dàt is een zwijnenstal!’ De ingezonden brief van De Haan luidde:
‘Mijn hart dringt mij tot een protest tegen de laatste plaat van dit Weekblad. Daarop zijn Duitsche officieren als zwijnen voorgesteld. Van die officieren weten wij, dat zij geleefd hebben naar hun gevoel. Van hun gevoel weten wij, dat het door de meerderheid der menschen wordt afgekeurd. Meer weten wij niet, en meer is er niet te weten. Er zijn altijd menschen, die zich bijzonder braaf gevoelen, wanneer anderen iets doen, dat de maatschappij liever niet ziet. Voor zulke menschen is een plaat, als de door mij gewraakte, eene spiegel van eigen zedelijke voortreffelijkheid. In den tijd van Christus heetten zij “Pharizeeërs”, in onzen tijd leggen zij zich in het bijzonder op liefdeloosheid toe, en op eigengerechtigheid. Een bepaalde naam is heden niet meer noodig. Jacob Israël de Haan.’
Wiessing voorzag De Haans stukje van een redactioneel commentaartje. De prent van Braakensiek was niet gericht tegen het ‘gevoel’ waar De Haan van sprak, maar tegen ‘het zóódje’ van Duitse officieren dat bacchanalen had georganiseerd met kurassiers635. - cursivering van Wiessing. Op of kort ná die 10de november 1907 plaatsen wij de oudst overgeleverde brief van De Haan aan Wiessing, hoewel er veel ruimte voor twijfel omtrent de datum is. Het is denkbaar dat Wiessing, behalve in de krant, ook privé op De Haans inzending gereageerd heeft en bijvoorbeeld de publicatie van een eerste handvol besliste volzinnen in hetzelfde nummer van De Amsterdammer aankondigde; dáártoe kan De Koo hem gemaand hebben. Het is ook denkbaar dat de brief iets later geschreven is, bijvoorbeeld na een uitnodiging van Eekhoud om in Brussel te komen logeren, waarbij Eekhoud dan gereageerd zou hebben op De Haans briefkaart van 14 november 1907. De getallen die De Haan ter sprake brengt in verband met de besliste volzinnen bieden geen aanknopingspunt. Wiessing plaatste op 10 november tien besliste volzinnen, op 1 december acht, op 8 december twintig en op 15 december vijftien stuks. De volzinnen werden niet doorgenummerd: iedere reeks begint met een nummer één. In elk geval dateert de brief aan Wiessing van ná 9 november 1907: toen plaatste De Nederlandsche Spectator het berichtje over Pathologieën in precies dezelfde bewoordingen als De Haan in de brief aan Wiessing voorstelt. |
