Nu eens hoor ik, dat u zeer ziek bent, en dan weder, dat u veel beter bent en spoedig naar Duitschland zult gaan om geheel beter te worden. Ik hoop zoo zeer, dat u beter worden zult. De dood van P.L. Tak heeft mij getroffen. Het gaat mij niet goed. Ik heb geene betrekking meer, en nu moet ik leven van wat ik bij elkander schrijf. Dat gaat niet gemakkelijk. Ik heb de vorige week aan de waarnemende redactie van de Groene616. gevraagd, of de stukken, die u van mij hebt geaccepteerd geplaatst werden. Maar die nette redactie heeft daarop niet geantwoord. Zoo hoop ik innig, dat zij allen sterven mogen. Als u kunt in uwen toestand spreek dan den heer Warendorf vooral over de uitgave van mijn boek: ‘Pathologieën’. Mijne zuster, Carry van Bruggen is eene nette vrouw, zij is op goeden voet met redacties en uitgevers. Zij heeft ook met den heer Warendorf gesproken, die haar boek ‘In de schaduw’ wil uitgeven. Hij wil mijn boek half september lezen, want hij is nu uit de stad. Als u hem dan ook eens bewerken wilde? U doet daar mij eenen grooten dienst mede. Ik kan u geene prettige dingen schrijven, zoo is het leven niet. Ik hoop, dat u en ik beter worden, zoo mogen de waarnemende menschen van de Groene afsterven. In september 1907 verscheen in het ‘weekblad voor letteren, kunst en wetenschap’ De Nederlandsche Spectator (onder redactie van Mr H. Louis Israëls) een tweede nerveuze vertelling: ‘De bloemen en de brief’, opgedragen aan Georges Eekhoud617.. Het verhaal onderscheidt zich van de overige nerveuze vertellingen door herkenbare autobiografische toespelingen: in de jurist Henri van Neerrijnen, die op donderdag618. 28 maart 1904 met een vrouwenarts, ‘veel ouder dan Van Neerrijnen’, zal gaan trouwen, kan men Jacob Israël de Haan herkennen en zijn huwelijk met Johanna van Maarseveen, dat op donderdag 28 maart 1907 voltrokken was in tegenstelling tot dat van Van Neerrijnen en Mary Matthes: Van Neerrijnen verbreekt de relatie en vertrekt op ‘die huwbare donderdag’ naar Parijs. De ik-verteller van het verhaal is weer Heleen (Golesco). Deze zoekt Van Neerrijnen in Parijs op: de beschrijving van zijn tocht per metro, waarbij hij op station Monceau uitstapt, naast de ingang van het befaamde Parc Monceau, verraadt De Haans vertrouwdheid met die stad. De Haan ondertekende de vertelling met ‘H.’, misschien om een voorbarige herkenning en identificatie te vermijden. In de verhouding tussen Van Neerrijnen en de vrouwenarts steekt, als men er te snel een parallel met de verhouding De Haan - Van Maarseveen in wenst te zien, iets onaangenaams voor het echtpaar. In de roman Ondergangen, die aan Maarseveen opgedragen was (‘Voor dokter Johanna van Maarseveen’), werd de uitgebuite verpleegster Anna door haar zuster Liesbeth opgescheept met een veel te duur pension in de Palestrinastraat, uitgerekend de straat waar het echtpaar De Haan domicilie had gekozen. Zo was ook hier de voor Van Maarseveen onaangename suggestie gewekt dat zij hoe dan ook iets met de inhoud van de roman te maken had. (Met Pijpelijntjes was het in 1904 precies eender gegaan: door het boek aan ‘goede A. Aletrino’ op te dragen, zette de schrijver de nieuwsgierige lezer op het spoor van Van Maarseveens collega. Men kan dit soort opdracht omschrijven als een bittere pil voor wie er verguld mee had moeten zijn. Het zijn decadente opdrachten619..) In Levensrecht was De Haan in september present met een gedichtje ‘De lijster’. Op 10 november 1907 begon in De Amsterdammer de publicatie van besliste volzinnen620., een reeks die in De Amsterdammer van 1, 8 en 15 december 1907 zou worden voortgezet. Het is denkbaar dat De Haan de kopij lang daarvóór had ingezonden. Dat zouden dan ‘de dingen’ zijn, waar hij in zijn derde brief aan De Koo van spreekt.
