Uw laatste schrijven noopt mij, U een korte inlichting te verstrekken. U schijnt namelijk van meening, dat in Uw brief aan den Heer Passtoors te lezen zou zijn geweest, dat U geen lid van de S.D.A.P. meer waart. Dit is inderdaad niet het geval. U schrijft alleen in dezen geest: dat U, hoewel niet katholiek, toch die brochure aan P. zendt om Schaper (ik meen, dat 't tegen Tak ging) te kunnen beantwoorden. Maar eenigerlei aanwijzing van Uw niet meer sociaaldemocraat zijn, is er niet in te vinden. Hoewel de brief steeds in 't bezit van den Heer Passtoors is gebleven, weet ik mij dat met zekerheid te herinneren. Noch aan Passtoors, noch aan mij, was bekend, dat U op gehouden had lid van de S.D.A.P. te zijn. En 't feit, door U aangewezen, dat zelfs Polak 14 Sept. 1906 - dus een week of 9 tevoren, in dezelfde onbekendheid verkeerde, wijst er wel op, dat aan Uw uittreden geen groote ruchtbaarheid gegeven was. Hoezeer ik in dit opzicht te goeder trouw was, blijkt wel uit een gesprek, dat ik voor 14 dagen met Tak had. Uit de tram stappend liep Tak met me mee op naar de Kamer. Op mijn portefeuille wijzende, vroeg hij lachend: ‘zit daar het materiaal in?’. ‘Dat is veel te kostbaar om 't zoo mee te zeulen, dat ligt veilig in mijn brandkast!611.’. ‘Nu, veel om 't lijf heeft 't niet, ik ken den knaap wel, die dat stukje uithaalde. Doch wij zullen hem wel dwingen zelf zijn naam te noemen’. ‘Wil hij dat zelf doen, daar heb ik geen bezwaar tegen; maar ik mag niet 't vertrouwen schenden, dat hij in een mijner vrienden stelde. Doch 't ligt voor de hand, dat na de herrie, die Het Volk ervan maakte, mij niets aangenamer zou zijn, dan 't bekend worden van den naam; dan kan iedereen zien, dat 't waar was, wat ik schreef’. 't Is wel merkwaardig, dat Tak toen niet zei: hij is geen soc. democraat meer! Dan was de zaak uit geweest, en hadde ik de fout kunnen herstellen ook zonder Uw naam te noemen. Doch.... de Heeren wilden er vermoedelijk wat meer ophef van maken! Hoogachtend Uw P. Aalberse
De ophef kwam diezelfde maand in de vorm van een brochure: De politieke Asmodée. Antwoord van Het Volk aan Mr. Aalberse. Over de zegsman van Mr. Aalberse: ‘Het was de heer Jacob Israël de Haan, schrijver van een der meest vieze boeken die ooit in ons land zijn verschenen. Het heette Pijpelijntjes en was van dien aard dat het zelfs uit den handel werd teruggenomen. Maar dezelfde heer Aalberse, die zoo tegen den vuilhandel vocht, beroept zich op dezen zelfden heer De Haan, die door zijn boek in onze partij onmogelijk was geworden, en er reeds in 1905 uittoog. Dàt was de sociaaldemokraat waardoor Mr. Aalberse zich liet inlichten! Op de vraag: wie liegt? is dus het antwoord: Aalberse!’. Op 12 mei 1907 liet De Haan in De Amsterdammer zijn licht over een opzienbarende affaire schijnen: de moord in Andijk, bij Hoorn aan de Zuiderzee. Een boerenjongen Ente Zwan vermorzelde daar de hersenpan van zijn slachtoffer, de echtgenoot van Vrouwtje Dekker, met een spade (‘als hij een paal had moeten kloven had hij zijn wapen niet zekerder kunnen richten’, schreef het Algemeen Handelsblad op 24 april) en kreeg veertien jaar gevangenisstraf. De Haan, in zijn opstel ‘Over de pathologische momenten van een moordgeval’, koos als uitgangspunt: ‘iedere moordenaar is een sympathiek mensch, en zijne terechtstand is eene belangwekkende zaak’. Hij overweegt voor ‘wanhopige gevallen’ als dat van Zwan andere oplossingen dan gevangenisstraf, zoals ‘werkgestichten’, maar het Wetboek van Strafrecht kent alleen gevangenissen. En dan slaakt hij een verzuchting: ‘Er is meer in een misdadigersgemoed dan er in alle wetboeken van strafrecht ter wereld is’. De eerste krant die meende dat men zulke goddeloze praat niet over zijn kant mocht laten gaan, was het katholieke blad De Tijd. Op 14 mei 1907 komt het met een artikel ‘Ergerlijk!’ op de voorpagina. De Haan wordt in relatie gebracht met de Franse decadente literatuur: ‘Dat wij in iederen moordenaar een sympathiek mensch behooren te zien, is een stelling, die, naar ons bekend is, wel in zeker soort van perverse Fransche romans wordt verdedigd’. En dan moet De Amsterdammer het ontgelden: ‘door de redactie van het weekblad [wordt] met geen enkel woord of teeken van een afwijkend oordeel of zelfs maar van eenigen twijfel of eenig voorbehoud blijk gegeven’. Maar de redactie van De Amsterdammer kroop volstrekt niet in haar schulp. De hoofdredacteur neemt op 26 mei 1907 persoonlijk de handschoen voor De Haan op: ‘Met den misdadiger moet men medelijden hebben. Waar zou men beter kunnen weten, dan aan het bureau van De Tijd, dat medelijden ook tot de oorspronkelijke beteekenis van sympathie behoort?’ Ook twee andere bladen, De Standaard en de Rotterdammer, die ‘de woorden van het Roomsche blad’ hadden overgenomen, krijgen een veeg uit de pan. De Tijd geeft zich niet gewonnen. Op 29 mei 1907 verschijnt een nieuwe aanval op de voorpagina: ‘Nog eens over “sympathieke moordenaars”’. Sympathie en medelijden zijn niet hetzelfde, betoogt het blad. De Haan ‘maakt zich schuldig aan een gevaarlijke storing van het zedelijk evenwicht’. Het stuk van De Koo wordt als ‘een bedekte terugtocht’ gezien. En wéér houdt De Koo ‘zijn spiegelgladgepolijste schild’612. voor De Haan (2 juni 1907): De Tijd schuift De Haan ‘diabolischen onzin’ in de schoenen, ‘De Tijd heeft, wat al te onnadenkend, een boom opgezet over onze duivelsche gezindheden’. Zo houdt De Koo voet bij stuk en verzekert dat hij ook het standpunt van De Haan weergeeft. Of dit laatste werkelijk het geval was, mag in twijfel worden getrokken: De Haan was beslist niet wars van perverse Franse romans. De Ware Jacob stak op 25 mei de draak met De Haan, ‘de juridische spécialité’ van De Groene: ‘iedere moordenaar is een sympathiek mens’ werd een gevleugeld woord, iets om hard om te lachen. Later, op 8 juni 1907, komt het blad nog eens treiterig terug op De Haans moordenaar, ‘die nogal wat consternatie verwekt heeft’. Op 30 juni 1907 treedt De Koo voor de laatste keer als hoofdredacteur van De Amsterdammer op. Op 7 juli maakt hij, in een boodschap gedateerd 3 juli, bekend dat hij zijn ambt heeft neergelegd. Half september vertrekt De Koo naar Luik, naar zijn jongste zoon die daar studeert. De oudste ons bekende brief van De Haan aan De Koo is ongedateerd, maar verwijst naar de 7de juli 1907, de dag waarop het aftreden van De Koo bekend gemaakt werd. De brief bevat direct al een paar motieven, die het karakter van de correspondentie De Haan - De Koo tot op grote hoogte zullen bepalen: het volhouden ondanks tegenwerking en ziekte, de lichtpuntjes der publicaties, de vrees om De Groene Amsterdammer als platform te verliezen, de bangelijkheid en burgerlijkheid der Nederlandse letterkundigen. Aan De Haans connectie met Nijmegen is een einde gekomen. |
