WelEdelGestrenge Heer!
Geruimen tijd geleden heb ik den heer W.C. Passtoors een exemplaar gezonden van mijnen: ‘Open brief aan P.L. Tak’ inzake mijn geschrift ‘Pijpelijntjes’. Ik deed dat omdat de heer Schaper den heer Passtoors had willen afstraffen en toch precies 't zelfde had gedaan. Dat bleek uit mijn ‘Open brief’. Lid van de S.D.A.P. was ik toen niet, dat ben ik reeds sinds twee jaren niet. Beter had ik gedaan dit den heer Passtoors te schrijven. Maar heb ik dat niet gedaan? Over dat geval schijnt u, niet geheel juist ingelicht, in uw Katholiek sociaal weekblad te hebben geschreven (6 April). Dat artikel is mij niet bekend, ook niet wat ‘Het Volk’ geschreven heeft. Ik heb den brief van den heer Passtoors niet terug ontvangen. Misschien is hij wel afgezonden, dat weet ik niet.
Voor 't eerst heb ik van de zaak gehoord door den eersten brief van den heer
Vliegen. U bemerkt wel, dat de heer Vliegen niet genoeg weet, doch juist van mij wat weten wil. Daarom vleit hij half, en dreigt hij half. Ik ben op het oogenblik te Nijmegen, en vroeg dus telegrafisch nadere inlichtingen. Daarop volgde de tweede brief. Het is u duidelijk, dat de heer Vliegen, als hij zeker was van de zaak, niet mijne toestemming tot publicatie van wat ook, zou vragen, doch eigenmachtig wel alles publiceeren zou, wat hem voordeelig was.
Ik heb toen den heer Vliegen het volgende telegram gezonden.
‘Redactie ‘Volk’. Keizersgracht Amsterdam
Onderstaand onveranderd te plaatsen:
‘Ik heb het kamerlid Passtoors alleen gezonden een exemplaar van “Open brief aan P.L. Tak” niet om Tak te bestrijden, maar om te doen weten, dat het kamerlid Schaper zelf deed, wat hij aan de katholieken verweet.
Dien brief heeft de heer Passtoors niet teruggestuurd. Lid van de arbeiderspartij was ik niet. Wat meester Aalberse erover schreef wist ik niet, maar zijne goede trouw staat voor mij vast’
Dit telegram is niet in telegramstijl geschreven, maar woordelijk zooals het hier staat. Maar ik ben zeker dat ‘Het Volk’ het niet geheel overnemen wil.
Ik schrijf u zoo uitvoerig, hoewel ik overwerkt en vermoeid ben, opdat u niet een valsche aanval te verduren krijgt, wegens eene vergissing te goeder trouw begaan. Hierbij gaan de brieven van den heer Vliegen die u gebruiken kunt gelijk u wilt, en die ik niet terug verlang. Overigens moet u de ‘Open brief’ maar eens lezen, dan weet u precies hoe zwaar de democratie van den heer P.L. Tak is. Was de naam van den heer Passtoors ‘Het Volk’ niet bekend?

Heeft de heer Passtoors mijn brief misschien nog?
Het Volk van 16 mei 1907 plaatste De Haans telegram nagenoeg woordelijk en concludeerde triomfantelijk: ‘Wij kunnen dus, nu alles bekend is, met volle recht zeggen: Aalberse loog’.
De Haans opvatting over het leerlingenstelsel bij de diamantbewerkers, neergelegd in de volgende brief, zou je bij uitstek democratisch kunnen noemen. De Haan zelf zag het anders: niet demo- maar aristocratisch.
