En rust is geluk. Ik ben je dankbaar voor je vriendschap van zooveel jaren. Ja: als je in 't land niet bent, dan kun je ook niet komen593.. Maar kom je anders: Donderdag 28 Maart Palestrinastraat 27. Twaalf uur. Neen: er zijn weinig menschen, en daaronder niemand, die je onaangenaam gezind is. 'n Paar willerkeurige maar die zie je niet. Cor Hugenholtz ken je nog uit Noordwijk. En 'n paar collega's van F.v.E. arts. Vrouwen. En de goede Giza Ritschl Regia594.. Die zal 't heel prettig vinden als je komt. Dan kom je aan tafel naast haar te zitten. Goed? In dezelfde maand, maart 1907, werd in Levensrecht De Haans eerste nerveuze vertelling gepubliceerd, onder de ietwat onduidelijke titel ‘Nerveuze vertellingen / (Over de ervaringen van Hélénus Marie Golesco)’595.. De hoofdfiguur en ik-figuur Heleen Golesco - de naam ontleende De Haan aan Hélène de Golesco, schrijfster van o.a. de roman Un dévouement sublime sous la Terreur (1904) - zal met zijn ervaringen de verbindende schakel tussen de verschillende nerveuze vertellingen vormen. Toch zien wij in die samenhang niet de aanzet tot een soort vervolgverhaal, zo min als zoiets ook in de zwerversschetsjes het geval was. In de roman Pathologieën zal Golesco terugkeren als een vriend van René Richell, een Roemeens edelman, die zich in de Seine verdronk, de voorganger van Johan van Vere de With als beminde en slachtoffer van de Duivel596.. In de nerveuze vertelling zet Satan, die met Jezus een weddenschap gesloten heeft597., Heleen als zijn ‘beste vriend onder de mensen’ in, zoals God in het bijbelverhaal de godvrezende Job inzette in zijn weddenschap met Satan. Voordat het verhaal begint, ontmoet de lezer eerst een ‘Opdracht aan: Georges Eekhoud’, en een met ‘J.Is. d. H.’ ondertekende strofe van een ‘Vers van Jezus’ (een omwerking van het begin van één der ‘Verzen van Jezus’ uit 1904598.). Het opvallende is nu dat Heleen in de loop van het verhaal in een gesprek met Jezus deze verzen ter sprake brengt: ‘de dichters, die uw zoogenaamd lijden bezingen, denkt u, dat die iets anders voelen dan genot om uwe mooi-gekleurde dood? Ik ken er een... in Amsterdam... die heeft veelbewonderende verzen op u gemaakt’. Hetzelfde doet zich voor met de opdracht aan Georges Eekhoud, die in zijn geheel luidt: ‘Er is ter wereld niet iets onmenschelijker dan een burger te zijn, en van al de burgerijen is die van Holland nog de onmenschelijkste. Zij zou zich zelf bepaald verkoopen, als dat niet zoo onfatsoenlijk was, en als er maar een bieder kwam. Naarmate ik echt sterk ben geworden in menschelijk leven en kunstbedrijf, heb ik dit land zuiverweg gehaat. Mijn troost is deze, dat dit fatsoenlijke burgervolkje gerustwel voordertijd, aan christendom, schiedam en marxisme zal ondergaan. Een smart van mij is: dat ik een Hollandsch kunstenaar ben. Meester Georges Eekhoud, laten wij geen twee burgers zijn’. De opmerking over ‘christendom, schiedam en marxisme’ keert op verrassende manier in het verhaal zelf terug, waar Heleen aan Satan schrijft: ‘Ook zijn de meeste menschen hier aan godsdienst, alcohol, en marxisme verslaafd, derwijze, dat men geen kunstvol woord te hooren krijgt’. Men herkent De Haans bittere gevoelens jegens zijn vaderland, maar men ziet in de verwerking van motto en opdracht in de tekst van het verhaal een kunstgreep die in vroeger werk, zoals Pijpelijntjes, ondenkbaar zou zijn geweest: de realistisch-naturalistische literatuuropvatting heeft plaatsgemaakt voor die der decadente romantiek of decadentisme599.. Teruggekeerd van huwelijksreis, vraagt De Haan aan Verwey diens boek Een inleiding tot Vondel (1893) te leen. Uit zijn ‘lessen in de letterkunde’ blijkt inderdaad, dat De Haan op een hoger niveau lesgaf dan waarvoor de kweekschool hem had opgeleid. |
