Nijmegen: Instituut ‘Wegerif’Zeer waarde heer Van Deyssel, het heeft mij zeer gegriefd en verwonderd, dat ik geheel niets van U of namens U heb gehoord, inzake publicatie van mijn boek: ‘Pijpelijntjes’, in de 20ste Eeuw. U hebt mij die zelf voorgesteld. Dat vond ik prettig en dat heb ik U geschreven met verzoek mij te willen melden welke deelen voor plaatsing in aanmerking kwamen. En wanneer dat zoowat wezen zou. Dat is alweer maanden geleden. En uw halsstarrig zwijgen op mijne brieven doet mij pijn. Gewoonweg ben ik langzamerhand verbijsterd geraakt. Van tijd tot tijd krijg ik ontzettende aanvallen van woede, wanneer ik bedenk met welk een voortdurende minachting U mij behandelt. Dat duurt nu met Juni aanstaande al drie jaar, en het heeft mij een groot deel van mijne gezondheid gekost, zoodat ik vrijwel ongeschikt voor mijn werk ben geworden. Daar komt bij, dat ik ten slotte in mijn woede de dolste dingen doe, die ik natuurlijk allen later precies verantwoorden moet. Wanneer U mijne medewerking voor het Tijdschrift hadt afgewezen, dan zou dat natuurlijk een bittere grief zijn geweest, maar daar was ik nu echter al overheen. Dit wat U nu doet is voor mij veel erger. Daar kan ik niet tegen. U vindt ‘Pijpelijntjes’ goed werk. Ik zelf ook. Ik vind het beter dan ‘Pathologieën’ vooral het tweede deel, dat vaster is van bouw en opvatting dan het eerste. Waarom maakt U mijn kunstenaarschap dan tot een vloek inplaats tot zegen in mijn leven, dat toch al zwaar genoeg is. Hoe U met de menschen moet omgaan weet U beter dan ik. Van Deyssel ‘hoofsch en beleefd als altijd’ heeft men over U geschreven. Wanneer U simpelweg en eenvoudig tegen mij hadt gedaan, dan zou ik nooit tot dubbelzinnigheden zijn gekomen, die nu worden uitgebuit om mij geheel en al te verderven585.. Maar langzaam aan raak ik verbijsterd. Het gaat niet langer. Ook kan ik niet opschieten met mijn werk. Ik hoop, dat U mij dit schrijven ten goede zult houden Het zegt allicht toch weer niet precies wat ik bedoel. Ik houd wel van U, maar de wijze, waarop U met mij omspringt maakt mij af en toe dol. Trouwens, ik heb nu juist zooveel zorg, dat ik er niet tegen op kan. En vooral 's nachts, als al de menschen stil zijn, denk ik altijd maar heen en weer van het verschijnen van ‘Pijpelijntjes’ af, tot nu toe. Dat wordt een gevaarlijke manie. Uwe stukken over litteratuur der laatste tijden heb ik gelezen. Prettig. Ik ben blij, dat U tenminste mijn werk goed vindt586.. Geheel de Uwe Jacob Israël de Haan Voor brieven, die mij Maandag, Dinsdag en Woensdag worden toegezonden, diene het Nijmeegsche adres. De andere dagen het Amsterdamsche. Maar U kunt ook alles naar de Willibrordstraat zenden. Dan vind ik het wel. Ik kom er iedere week.
Op 28 maart 1907 werd het huwelijk tussen Jacob Israël de Haan en zijn verloofde, Johanna van Maarseveen, voltrokken. Daar ging natuurlijk het een en ander aan vooraf. Ten eerste verklaarde de Commissaris van de Koningin in de provincie Noord-Holland, in een stuk gedateerd: 12 februari 1907, ‘dat aan Jakob Israël de Haan, geboren te Smilde op 31 December 1881 zoon van Izak en van Betje Rubens bij de loting voor de lichting der nationale militie van het jaar 1901 voor de gemeente Zaandam is ten deel gevallen No. 68, en dat hij vervolgens bij onherroepelijk geworden uitspraak van den militieraad uit hoofde van lichaamsgebreken, onder no. 192 genoemd in het reglement B op het geneeskundig onderzoek, vastgesteld bij Koninklijk Besluit van 2 November 1883 (Staatsblad no. 151)587., van den dienst is vrijgesteld’. Ten tweede werd er, op 18 februari 1907, een acte opgemaakt: ‘Toestemming tot het aangaan van een huwelijk’, door een notaris te Zaandam, waarbij ‘De Heer Izak de Haan, Israelitisch Godsdienstonderwijzer, en Mejuffrouw Betje Rubens, echtelieden wonende met elkander te Zaandam’, instemden met het huwelijk van ‘hun zoon Jacob Israël de Haan, Juridisch Candidaat’ met ‘Mejuffrouw Johanna Belia Cornelia Jacoba van Maarseveen [...], arts, wonende te Amsterdam’. Op 3 maart 1907 kwam bij de Israëlitische Kerkeraad te Zaandam een schrijven binnen van Izak de Haan588. ‘vragende namens zijn zoon Jacob Israël [...] lid der Gemeente te zijn, alleen voor de begraafplaats’; wellicht is een laatste rustplaats op het Joodse kerkhof te Zaandam een voorwaarde geweest, door de Israëlitische Godsdienstonderwijzer gesteld, toen hij zijn toestemming tot dit gemengde huwelijk gaf589.. Ondertrouw werd aangetekend te Amsterdam, op zaterdag 16 maart 1907. De bruidegom heet ‘leeraar bij het Middelbaar onderwijs (H.B.S.)’; ‘kerkelijke gezindte’: geen. De bruid is Nederlands-Hervormd. Op 17 en op 24 maart 1907 werd het huwelijk afgekondigd. Op 28 maart werd het voltrokken. ‘Als getuigen waren tegenwoordig: Johannes Hendrikus Karel Docters van Leeuwen, zwager der echtgenoote590. oud drie en veertig jaren, Gerard Ras, oud zes en twintig jaren, beiden leeraar bij het middelbaar onderwijs, Jozef de Haan, handelsagent, oud vijf en dertig jaren, en Gerson de Haan, zonder beroep, oud twee en twintig jaren, beiden broeder des echtgenoots, allen wonende alhier’; aldus de huwelijksacte. De Haan had wel graag Frederik van Eeden als getuige gehad. Enige tijd vóór 28 maart 1907 schreef hij hem. |
