St-Willibrordstraat. 1 Januari 1907.Beste mijnheer Verwey, sta mij toe, dat ik mij bemoei met eene zaak, die mij wel niet aangaat, maar die mijn gemoed toch wel aangaat. Dat is de moeilijkheid tusschen U en tusschen Van Eeden. Ik heb daarvan het eerst van Giza gehoord, en dat dit alles was voortgekomen uit de plaatsing in ‘De Beweging’ van een artikel van Frank van der Goes. Ik wist toen heelemaal niet, dat dit zoo hoog oploopen zou. Het is een leelijke wond voor de beweging geworden. Nu zeide Giza later, dat U bereid waart van Van Eeden een stuk weerom te plaatsen. Maar dat vindt Van Eeden niet genoeg. Eerlijk ben ik dat met hem eens. Uw prospectus voor De Beweging is voor mij eene diepzinnige openbaring geweest. Ik waardeer U ten hoogste. Maar het was mij onduidelijk wat eene beweging wezen moest, waaraan Van Eeden en Van der Goes zouden meedoen. Als ik Van Eeden was geweest, dan zou ik mij tegen de medewerking van F. van der Goes dadelijk hebben verzet. Niet ik, zooals ik ben, maar als ik Van Eeden was. Het beruchte stuk van Van der Goes heb ik niet gelezen, en dat is maar heel goed. Nu word ik door de bijzondere verschijning daarvan niet in mijn algemeene waardeering bedrogen. En de reden, dat Van Eeden niet meer aan De Beweging mede wil werken is niet, dat de inhoud van het stuk slecht was. Maar de geest van het stuk was verdorven, en gij hadt het goedgevonden. Dit wijst op een zóó diepgaand verschil tusschen U tweeën, dat Van Eeden zonder meer niet mede wil werken. En heeft hij daarin ongelijk? Waar bemoeide de heer F. van der Goes zich mede? Van Eeden meende, dat er tusschen U en tusschen hem geestelijke eenheid bestond, voldoende voor medewerking op den grondslag van vrijen en vriendschappelijken omgang. Hij zou ook hebben opgehouden mede te werken, wanneer het stuk van V.d.G. in een ander tijdschrift was verschenen, en gij er Uwe goedkeuring over hadt uitgesproken. Want mijnheer Verwey: de Beweging is geen gewoon tijdschrift. Het staat tot de andere tijdschriften gelijk een kunstenaar staat tot een werkman. Want de andere tijdschriften, ja ook ‘Nieuwe Gids’ en ‘20ste Eeuw’, bestaan omdat zij reeds bestaan of omdat sommige menschen het aangenamer vinden redacteur dan wel medewerker te wezen. Maar, mijnheer Verwey, nu dat zoo is, nu moet U toch ook alles doen om de Beweging zuiver en sterk te houden. Laat het tijdschrift niet afvallen tot de waarde van al die anderen. Ge moet zeer zeker Uw best doen eene verzoening met Van Eeden te bevorderen, die beslist van de beweging is. Gij zoudt hem kunnen bezoeken, hetzij te Walden-Bussum, hetzij te Amsterdam. En ik geloof, dat gij de beweging eenen dienst zoudt bewijzen, wanneer gij Van Eeden, zonder derden, dus ook zonder den heer F. van der Goes, het mederedacteurschap van De Beweging zoudt aanbieden. Of minstens dit: dat hij artikelen, die hem persoonlijk raken, desgewenscht afwijst. Dit doende geeft gij hem geene onrechtvaardige macht, maar gij spreekt ronduit het vertrouwen uit, dat artikelen, die Van Eeden wraakt, de beweging zouden schaden. Ja, uw macht zou schijnbaar minder worden, doch de rechtvaardigheid van Uw macht, die wordt dan maar des te grooter. Ik vrees zeer, dat mijn invloed niet groot genoeg is, om U te bewegen naar Van Eeden te gaan, en hem te geven, wat hem eerlijk toekomt. En ik vrees ook, dat wanneer Van Eeden van het tijdschrift afblijft, de beweging en De Beweging eene ontzettende schade zullen lijden. Ga naar Van Eeden, ik vraag het U. Wanneer ge met hem spreekt, dan zal hij U ook wel overtuigen, dat Gij onrecht hebt gedaan. Het valt mij heel moeielijk deze dingen te schrijven. Van Eeden en Gij zijt beide mijne meerderen en mijne ouderen. Maar ik zou U toch zoo dringend willen verzoeken naar mij óók te luisteren. U hebt óók naar Giza Ritschl geluisterd, wier inzicht niet zuiverder en wier persoon niet onafhankelijker is, dan ik het ben.
Na deze groote kwestie, die ik eene levenskwestie vind het dagelijksche kleingoed. Vooreerst: beste gelukwenschen ter gelegenheid van het nieuwe jaar579., voor U zelven en al de Uwen. En het gaat mij nu vrij goed. Maar daarover misschien later. Geloof toch, dat ik U hoogacht, en alles wil doen om U genoegen te geven. Heb het goed. Geheel d'Uwe Jacob Israël de Haan
De Haans artikel in De Amsterdammer van 30 december 1906 over het proces tegen De Geer en De Montigny lokte verzet en protest uit. Het Volk van 3 januari 1907 betichtte hem, ‘voormalig partijgenoot, tegenwoordig jurist’ (De Haan was kandidaat in de Rechten), van het huldigen van een ‘rechts’standpunt en hoonde de ‘rechtsgrond om iemand “met een maatschappelijke positie” straffeloos te verklaren. Een maatschappelijke positie’, aldus Het Volk, ‘heeft iedere bourgeois en geen enkele proletariër. Ergo, de strafwet is alleen voor de proletariërs’. Op 13 januari zou De Amsterdammer zelf een reactie opnemen van dr Wijnaendts Francken, bioloog en bekend amateur-filosoof uit die tijd580..
