St- Willibrordstraat.Beste Van Eeden, dat was een ernstige prettige brief, die mij op Kerstmorgen verraste. Ik wil graag Donderdag komen, met den trein, die zoowat half een te Bussum is. Doe met je werk maar juist alsof ik er niet was. Over enkele dingen schrijf ik je liever: Dat gevoel ik in mijn werk ook, hoe geen twee menschen hetzelfde woord in gelijke beteekenis gebruiken. En juist die diepere woorden hebben daar het meeste van te lijden. Maar wat algemeen verstaan wordt onder: ‘vrije wil’, dat is toch goed genoeg bekend. Ik vrees ook, dat het onderwerp te zwaar zal zijn voor mijne krachten; ik wil van mijn werk geen compilatie-werk maken. Ja, het is meer nog een psycho-physiologisch dan een rechtskundig vraagstuk. Dat is juist het verbijsterende in de wetenschap: in 't begin lijkt alles kant en klaar. Maar hoe verder men komt, dan wordt alles duister. De kleine kwesties zijn klaar genoeg. Hoe een cel hygiënisch moet worden ingericht, dat is nog wel te weten, maar hoe de Staat aan het recht van celstraf komt, dat is duister. Daarom: in de enkele wetenschap zit geen kracht. Daarbij behoort een sterk vertrouwen. Het derde deel van De Kleine Johannes heb ik nog niet aandachtig kunnen lezen. Het leven is zoo druk voor mij. Als ik nu niet een zekere steun had dan hield ik het alvast niet vol. Giza heef mij wel van moeilijkheden met Verwey verteld. Het spijt mij zoo, dat je uit De Beweging bent gegaan; ik wist dat niet. Het heeft mij altijd verbaasd, dat in één tijdschrift, dat een beweging wilde wezen Frank van der Goes en je-zelf medewerkten. Dat leek mij geene eenheid. Maar Verwey heeft je dat toch gezegd? En in allen gevalle ben je er niet uitgegaan na de eerste bijdrage van Van der Goes. Welnu: is het dan wel juist nu uit te loopen omdat Van der Goes over de Kleine Johannes heeft geschreven. Van Eeden en Van der Goes in ééne Beweging te willen opvangen, dat is metterdaad een gebrek aan algemeen doorzicht veel te ernstig in iemand als Verwey wezen wil, en ik dacht, dat hij dat ook was. Was je maar dadelijk tegen de medewerking van Goes opgekomen. Maar nu V.d.G. eenmaal medewerker was had Verwey nu wel het recht de plaatsing van een stuk, dat hij goed vond, te weigeren? Dat zou Van Deyssel misschien hebben gedaan. Hoe dat zij: Verwey zou een stuk van je tegen V.d.G. toch óók hebben opgenomen. Het is zoo jammer: de Beweging krijgt nu weer eenen al te zwaren slag. Ik hoop, dat je nog keeren kunt en wilt, maar ik vrees het wel. Wat toont dit nu weer? Dat de slechtste tijdschriften zonder beginsel blijven bestaan: De Gids573.. Daarvan is de voornaamste steun: het geld, de nette manieren van mijnheer Van Hall en de voorzichtigheid. Het is 'n soort eer in De Gids te komen. Maar ik zou wel eens willen weten, hoeveel goed werk van onbekenden die heeren daar al hebben teruggestuurd, en dat zij slecht werk plaatsen op den naam des schrijvers af weet iedereen (Is. Querido, mevrouw Lapidoth Swarth.) Ik geloof zeker als Giza iets zond, dat het geplaatst werd, hoewel niemand aan De Gids iets van hare bijzondere schoonheid gevoelt. En Albert Verwey wilde iets mooiers met zijn tijdschrift. Hij zal het nu niet kunnen houden. En dat is niet het ongeluk van onzen tijd, maar een van de vele teekens, dat onze tijd ongelukkig is. Het leven is lang niet licht. En het eenige goede is: zichzelven te zijn, luisteren naar de stem van je hart. Al vervreemdt je dan ook van iedereen. Maar natuurlijk is het nog beter samen te zijn, en toch je zelf te wezen. Dat is de beweging. Tot overmorgen. Beste groeten Joop
Donderdag 27 december 1906 was De Haan op Walden. Op 28 december noteert Van Eeden in zijn dagboek: ‘Jacob de Haan wandelde mee’ (naar Blaricum) ‘en bleef 's avonds. Jolles574. en Emons waren er ook’. In zijn brief van 30 december 1906 komt De Haan terug op ‘die verdrietige kwestie met A. Verwey’. Het uitzicht op een Duitse vertaling van Pathologieën herinnert ons aan Georges Eekhoud, die waarschijnlijk voor het contact met Meienreis, de vertaler van Escal-Vigor, gezorgd heeft en die uit die tijd geen brieven van De Haan bewaard heeft. Het opstel ‘In de zaak van jhr Th.A.C. de Geer en J.J. Le Fèvre de Montigny’ verscheen op 30 december in De Amsterdammer. Deze publicatie zou opzien baren. Het betrof een geruchtmakende zwendel van twee bankdirecteuren. De Haan bepleitte een veroordeling van beide heren ‘tot gevangenisstraf van éénen dag’. Hij definieert straf als ‘de vermindering, die de gestrafte aan zijn leven gevoelt als gevolg van de bestrafte daad’. En wat deze aanzienlijke personen, nu: ‘uitstootelingen’, betreft, ‘hun leven is meer dan genoeg verminderd’, vooral door ‘de schandalige martelingen der voltallige terechtzittingen’. Een jarenlang verblijf in de gevangenis zou neerkomen op ‘eene onnoodige lijfstraf, die het laagwaardige wraakgevoel van de onmondige massa bevredigt’. De Koo nam in een commentaartje enige afstand: ‘Ofschoon wij niet tot de conclusie van den schrijver komen, meenen wij dit stuk niet te mogen weigeren, wijl het op eene zijde der rechtspraak wijst, welke vaak door een groot deel van het publiek al te zeer uit het oog wordt verloren’. |
