118. De Haan aan Haspels, mei (?) 1906

Zeer geachte heer Haspels, sinds ik u over ‘Pijpelijntjes’ schreef heb ik diep en derelijk geleden, gelijk ge misschien hebt kunnen lezen in ‘Open brief aan P.L. Tak’. Maar hoewel zenuwziek en zeer verzwakt, werk ik nú weer iets beter.
Ge vindt ingesloten vier kleine proza-stukjes uit eene serie ‘fijne fragmenten’. Daarin gebeurt niets dan tederheid. Ik bied u deze vier aan voor het tijdschrift ‘Onze Eeuw’. Zoo hoop ik, dat ze u daarvoor welgekomen zullen zijn.
Ik hoop ook, heer Haspels, dat ge mijn fijnste bevingen van ziel meevoelen wilt. En dat ge mij geen slechte jongen meer zult vinden. Ik bén niet zoo slecht als men mij heeft uitgekreten. Waarlijk niet. Wat heb ik niet veel verloren, maar mijn kunst heb ik behouden. Als de litteratoren vergaderen zal ik u dan zien? Ik heb een penibele en schamele broodsbetrekking en die laat mij alleen Zondags vrij.
Ge moet deze vier brokjes maar eens goed lezen. Ze zijn van weinig uiterlijke schijn, maar ik gloof met diepere deugd. God, als ik weer eens goed werd. Heel goed.

Het meinummer van Ontwaking kwam met een gedicht van De Haan, ‘Stad’. De Haan was in de kring rondom dat tijdschrift welkom. ‘Het was de schone tijd dat wij, een jonge, vurige bende’, aldus A.J.J. (Ary) Delen in 1951 in de prospectus voor De Haans Verzamelde gedichten, ‘geschaard rond het kleine, maar dappere tijdschrift Ontwaking, toen reeds vochten in de eeuwige strijd voor Vrijheid en Menselijkheid. De Haan was van eerstaf, en tot zijn tragische dood, een der onzen. Af en toe mochten wij hem hier te Antwerpen begroeten’.
Op 6 mei 1906 stond in De Amsterdammer De Haans ‘Brieven’, een zwerversschetsje; op het ‘afdrukje’ in het bezit van Georges Eekhoud vindt men een gedrukte opdracht aan Saalborn.
