Het is heden Zondag, en ik wenschte u wel over sommige dingen te schrijven. Wat is er gebeurd met mijne kleine bijdrage voor uw tijdschrift? Ik had u vooraf gevraagd of u tegen eene bijdrage van mij bezwaar hadt, zooals ik b.v. weet, dat De Gids werk van mij heeft geweigerd, dat de redactie-zelf ‘voortreffelijk’ noemde, enkeld omdat het 't mijne was. Daarop hebt gij geantwoord, neen er was geen bezwaar, want bijdragen werden enkelweg litterair geoordeeld. Ik heb u toen twee kleine stukjes gezonden, die u blijkbaar niet hebt geweigerd, ik heb er in November drukproef en revisie van gehad, en die ook verzorgd. Er stond op aangeteekend: dat het voor 't Decembernommer was. Maar daarna heb ik er niets meer van vernomen. Dit zou vroeger nu niet zoo bar zijn geweest, maar nu ik van alle kanten zoo word gegriefd, nu merk ik 't wel. Ik heb u mijn geliefden roman ‘Pathologieën’ gezonden, voor alle zekerheid met zegels voor terugzending erbij. Op uw tijdschrift staat afgedrukt, dat u den 7den dag der maanden, voor terugzending zorgt. Ach, waarvoor hebt u mij ge-exceptionneerd. Waarom hebt u nu óók meegedaan aan die abominabele boycot over mij? U hebt mij in Juli 1904 geschreven496., dat ik moed zou houden, en mijn kunst niet moest verlaten. Dat heb ik ook niet gedaan, hoewel ik gedurende dien tijd ontzettend heb geleden, en nog voortdurend is mijn leven één last, zonder eenige hoop op verbetering. Ziet ge, toen u mijn werk zoo voortreffelijk vondt, toen was mij dit een aangename geflatteerde lof, ik houd van u, maar nu na zoo'n barren tijd, zie ik, dat ik deze lof niet-geflatteerd heb verdiend. Metterdaad, ik tart half-Holland, om zóó geminacht en zoo bevuild te leven, als ik het doe, en toch in kunst en studie niet achteruit te raken. Want gerust, meester Van Deyssel, ik leef nog wel, en ik werk nog wel. Ik heb het tweede deel van ‘Pijpelijntjes’ voltooid, en nu werk ik aan een nieuw boek ‘Samenspanningen’, ditmaal van andere ge-aardheid. Niet, omdat ik die van mijn vroeger werk als verkeerd heb gezien, dat mocht wat, maar enkeld omdat het zoo is. Mijne kunstwerken volgen op elkander als de dagen van de week. Men kan er geene enkele overslaan, om bij een volgend te komen. Weet u precies hoe onafhankelijk een artist van zijne omgeving is? Sommigen hebben behoefte aan veel en luide lof b.v. Quérido. Maar ik gloof zeker, dat op den duur ieder jong kunstenaar schade lijdt in zijn geest en in zijne gaven, die op mijne wijze mishandeld wordt. Zelfs de stevigste planten gaan dood, als ze plotseling van hunnen voedingsbodem worden afgerukt, en ergens maar zoo neergesmeten. De houding van menschen, die mijn werk haten, die kan ik nog begrijpen, maar de uwe begrijp ik niet. Als u mijn werk zóó goed en zeldzaam vindt, waarom dan is u aan diens ondergang zóó weinig gelegen? Ik kan mijn werk niet eens goed ge-editeerd krijgen, in periodieken niet en apart óók niet. Met een soortement van fanatisme arbeid ik nu maar door. Ik weet wel, heer Van Deyssel, sommigen verbitteren mijn deel van leven om de wille van Dr. Aletrino. Het is nu niet van pas497., die affaire, waarvan u de preciese verhoudingen niet kent, hier voor u uit te meten, alleen dit verzeker ik u in alle ernst, dat hij mij meer kwaad heeft gedaan, als ik hem. U behoeft voor hem gerust niet op te komen, het is onnoodig. Geachte Heer Van Deyssel, als voor mijn werk ‘Pathologieën’ in uw tijdschrift geene plaatsing zij, zend het mij dan terug. De type-afdruk heeft mij gerust te veel gekost, om het nu maar zoo te doen versmijten. Meent u, dat ik niet genoeg psychologische zelfkennis heb, om mijne degeneratie te voelen, die langzaam aan mij overmeestert. Ik verzet mij wel, want geen mensch gaat gaarne en met zuiver bewustzijn onder. Ziet ge, deze brief is een, zij het wanhopige poging, tot dit verzet. De klare kalmte, waarmede men hier in Holland mij ten onderen brengt, daar zit iets angstigs in. Ik ben niet boos op u, en u merkt wel aan mijn schrift, dat ik zonder zenuwzieke drift schrijf. Het ga u bij voortduring wel, en u wordt vriendelijk en met achting gegroet van uw: Jacob-Israël de Haan
Op 18 maart 1906 publiceerde De Amsterdammer in de rubriek ‘Feuilleton’: ‘De zwarte kat. Zwerversschetsje. (Uit het dagboek van eenen zwerver)’, een eerste proeve van wat als een reeks, en waarschijnlijk ook als een boekje, van zwerversschetsjes bedoeld zou blijken. Een ik-verteller komt in Amsterdam een vrouw tegen, die hij zich van vroeger van school herinnert. ‘Voor ik een zwerver in 't leven werd stond ik in de klas naast haar’, als collega. Om haar zwarte haren en ogen en om haar manier van lopen (‘slap kattig, met stappen als over zachtig fluweel’) werd zij ‘de zwarte kat’ genoemd. Zij raken in gesprek en ‘de zwarte kat’ vertelt hem ‘totaal-onwijs’ de geschiedenis van haar ontslag op school498.. Ook in de maart-aflevering van Ontwaking verscheen een zwerversschetsje, getiteld ‘Artisten’, opgedragen aan Georges Eekhoud en ondertekend door: Jacob-Israël de Haan, met een verbindingsstreepje tussen de beide voornamen. De ik-verteller, een marskramer, trekt door Friesland, zonder verdiensten en in barre kou; ‘ten avond moest ik vroeg stoppen voor dwaalbare duisternis’. Hij steekt, ‘ziek van leven en van zwerven’, per boot over naar Enkhuizen en ontmoet in zijn hotel een gezelschap toneelspelers. De ‘baas van 't spel’ speelt dan een ‘sterrefscène’ voor hem, uit een stuk naar een verhaal van Justus van Maurik. Een aanduiding ‘zwerversschetsje’ of ‘uit het dagboek van eenen zwerver’, zoals bij ‘De zwarte kat’ in De Amsterdammer, ontbreekt bij dit verhaal ‘Artisten’. Men vindt de aanduiding wél bij een ander verhaal van De Haan, ‘Kleedkloppen’, dat in augustus in Ontwaking stond: ‘Zwervers-Schetsjes’ en ‘(uit het dagboek van eenen zwerver)’, hoewel er in dit verhaal van een burenruzie in een volksbuurt, dat nauw aansluit bij Pijpelijntjes, geen sprake is van een zwerver en een ik-verteller, die toch onontbeerlijk lijken in de formule die De Haan zich voor zijn zwerversschetsjes had uitgedacht. Waarschijnlijk heeft men zich bij Ontwaking vergist en de aanduidingen die bij ‘Artisten’ hoorden, bij het verkeerde, Pijpelijntjes-achtige verhaal ‘Kleedkloppen’ geplaatst. Op 6 mei verscheen in De Amsterdammer een zwerversschetsje, ‘Brieven’, waarin we de formule weer terugvinden: de ik-verteller ontmoet in Amsterdam een vriend van vroeger en deze vertelt hem het verhaal van zijn zuster en hoe ze in Meerenberg terecht is gekomen. De opdracht van ‘Artisten’ aan Georges Eekhoud behoort tot de zeer schaarse tekens van de vriendschap tussen beide schrijvers die uit het jaar 1906 bewaard gebleven zijn. In zijn dagboek maakt Eekhoud aantekeningen over de ‘litteratures flamande et hollandaise’, maar niets over De Haan. In zijn archief is een overdrukje van ‘Brieven’, met een handgeschreven opdracht, bewaard gebleven. In die tijd, laten we zegen: in het voorjaar van 1906, is De Haan ziek geweest. Is hij toen, om op krachten te komen, uitgeweken naar ‘het land tusschen Westzaan en Nauerna’, zoals Johan van Vere de With doet in Pathologieën, in het laatste hoofdstuk? Johan woonde daar bij ‘menschen De Boer, die aan den dijk hun huis hadden’. Dat huis had ‘geene twee kamers achter elkander’, het had dus maar één kamer met ‘een dubbel uitzicht’. ‘Vooruit zag Johan op kleigrond, die voor bouwland werd gebruikt. Naar achteren keek hij ver over laagveenlanden, die grasvelden waren. De lage veenvelden spoelden vol diep water, en zij stonden volgebouwd met hooge molens [...]. De kleilanden hadden geen water en geene molens, maar zij hadden lichtgele akkers van bloeiend koolzaad en donkergoud-bruine velden van gerijpt koren’. Ook in de korte roman Ondergangen komt men dit huis, gelegen ‘tusschen Zaandam en Westzanen aan den Noorder-IJdijk’, tegen. ‘Aan de voorkant strekten de bouwzame akkerlanden ver en in alle breedte weg, met weinig woningen en weinig water, geen vee. [...] Aan achterzijde had hun dijkhuis uitzicht over vlakke weivelden van 't Zaansche land, vol dorpen, vol losse woningen, vol molens, en vol water’. In De Amsterdammer van 29 juli 1906 beschrijft De Haan in een fijn fragment hetzelfde huis in hetzelfde landschap.

Hier woon ik nu uit stad weggeweken, die mij heeft gegriefd met zenuw-bezeerende pijn, in lands ruimte en ruime rust, tusschen zoovele steden en dorpen van ons land. Mijn kamer heb ik met dubbel uitzicht. Achter-weg over vlaktes van weide en water, aan elke sloot malen de molens of ze staan spiegelend stil met windeloos getij. Naar voren liggen de polders, die zonder molens zijn, maar vol van koren- en koolzaad, en dat hebben de geweide velden weer niet. En steden en dorpen, dat ik hier zien mag! Zaandam leit dichtebij en ook Westzaan, dat ik hun huizen en hunne kerken herken. Haarlem is bemerkt aan flitse zonneblik op het hooge eenzame dak van de kerk. Van Amsterdam zijn met nat en mistig weer maar weinig dingen bezichtelijk. Maar als zon de misten oprolt, dan zie ik heele bebouwde breedtes der stad. Ik vrees hem nu niet meer, die hier veilig te lande woon. En terug ga ik niet... ik kan het niet, om 's lieven levens wil, ik kán het niet. Met de avonden is het tooneel van dit bedaarde leven heel anders. Dan ligt de bouw van Haarlem weggedonkerd in duisternis van land onder duistere lucht. De Zaansche dorpen slieren halen van huizen-lichtjes over nachts-velden heen met wakken van lichteloos duister, want ze zijn los gebouwd. Hunne lichten dooven vroeg uit. O, maar boven stad-Amsterdam siddert gloed, weergeschenen van barnend stratenlicht, dat bar brandt, duizend-tallig brandt het. Als de lucht dampig is, water-zwaar, hangt dit licht rood-sidderend, laag, bloed-dreigend. Uit mijn ramen kan ik het laat zien, als lichten der dorpen reeds lang zijn gebluscht, want de stad leeft later, heviger. Soms zijn Hollands hemelen helder en stil, ook nog wel op dit winterweersche getij. Dan spant het breede stads-licht dun-geel, hooger aan de lucht. Wie het uit donkere polder ziet gehangen, zoo licht, zoo roereloos, mocht denken, dat het hemellicht is. Maar het is licht der stad, en die leit er onder, laatlevend, hijgende.
De Haan hoopt Haspels te zien op de jaarvergadering van de Vereeniging van Letterkundigen, begin juni; Haspels was penningmeester. De Haan is in de volgende brief nog werkzaam op de RVB. De Haan stuurde fijne fragmenten, brokjes woordkunstig proza, naar Haspels voor opname in Onze Eeuw. Daarin zijn ze niet gepubliceerd. Wel verschenen dit soort stukjes van eind 1905 tot eind 1909 in Ontwaking, De Amsterdammer, Groot-Nederland, De XXe Eeuw, De Nieuwe Gids en Elsevier's. |
