Brieven van en aan Jacob Israël de Haan 1899-1908
(2018)–Jacob Israël de Haan– Auteursrechtelijk beschermd1906Als bouwstenen voor een biografie van Jacob Israël de Haan staat ons weinig méér materiaal ter beschikking dan wat hij ons, met bepaalde bedoelingen en in een bepaald arrangement, zelf aanbiedt. Geen dagboek komt met onthullingen zoals het dagboek van Georges Eekhoud, of met mededelingen van intieme of ook wel alledaagse aard (fietstochtjes) zoals dat van Frederik van Eeden. Elk geschrift van de hand van De Haan is onmiddellijk voor vreemde ogen bestemd geweest: de brieven, hoe vertrouwelijk soms ook, steeds terughoudend, afgestemd op de correspondentiepartner, de krantenstukken gericht op een breed publiek (waarbij het opvalt hoe zeldzaam veel informatie over alledaags doen en laten men in zijn kinderrubriek van 1903 en 1904 aantreft: na De Haans vertrek werd dat direct heel anders) en dan de literaire teksten, poëzie en proza, vol suggesties, maar verraderlijk terrein voor wie biografisch feitenmateriaal bijeenzoekt. Heeft De Haan in de winter 1905/1906 vanuit Amsterdam een tochtje naar Haarlem gemaakt? Misschien. In elk geval is het in het fijne fragment ‘Haarlem’, dat op 29 juli 1906 in De Amsterdammer werd gepubliceerd, vrij koud en het ‘boomegie’ dat De Haan beschrijft, op de hem eigen wijze verkleind zoals hij ook ‘mannegie’ schreef495., heeft geen blaadjes. Men kan het fragment zien als een zeer literaire pendant van de journalistieke bewerkingen van een dergelijk thema (het tochtje naar Marken, de reis om de Zuiderzee, het bezoek aan Artis), die De Haan in de kinderrubriek van het Zondagsblad van Het Volk plaatste.
Haarlem
Dát is een stad, die ik diep en trouw bemin. Hier nu in grootere wonend is verlangen naar die plaats, met heerschende dwang sterk over mij geworden. Dat ik ben opgegaan om Haarlem weer te zien. Laat met den avond nog, ná moewen dag van stadig gewerk, ging ik heen. Een reis als om te bidden op oude plaatsen waar mijn grooter-groeiende jeugd heeft gebloeid. Die stad ken ik zoo, ieder wegje en steggetje ken ik zoo. En het wederzien ontroerde mij met oversterke vreugde. De Nieuwe-Gracht. Daar heb ik lang stil gestaan, waar de Jansstraat over het water sluist. Heel de wal lei leeg van leven. En de lucht was leeg van wolken. Het vroor niet, maar het vroor bijna wel. Spiegel-stil, onafgebroken spande het water, met dun licht zóó er over gestreken, dat roereloos water als onroerbaar spiegelend ijs was. Geen huis werd bewogen. Dus bewogen ook hun spiegel-stille verbeeldingen in den waterwal niet. In 't water uitgebeelde woningen zijn teerder van tint dan de werkelijk-bewoonde zijn. Wie ze lang aan kijkt meent zeker, dat in ieder van hun een diep geheim gebeurt, maar men kan nooit weten wat. Het oude school heb ik langs-gezien. Dat had mat maanlicht op ruit en deuren. Het boomegie, dat langs een vóór-venster opklom met blaadjes toen ik het laatst daar aanzat, was los van bladeren, looveloos. Maar zwart-dunne takseltjes, onder licht van blauw-bleeke maan in nacht, die haast vroor, geleken zwarte blaadjes te zijn. Nog fijner dan eén boom zijn blaadjes maken kan.
Van 18 februari dateert de eerste brief uit 1906, een schrijven aan Lodewijk van Deyssel. De Haan lijkt hem twee fijne fragmenten te hebben toegezonden, als het in de brief tenminste gaat om de bijdragen die in april 1907 in De XXe Eeuw werden gepubliceerd. Met het ‘tweede deel’ van Pijpelijntjes bedoelt De Haan natuurlijk niet de omwerking van de eerste versie, maar het vervolg op de tweede versie van de roman. Aan Pijpelijntjes II zou een ongelukkig lot beschoren zijn. Met het boek Samenspanningen moet de korte roman Ondergangen bedoeld zijn. Het woord ‘samenspanning’ duidt een relatie of een verhouding aan. In die betekenis komt het ook in Pathologieën voor, in het derde hoofdstuk van het derde deel; daar schrijft de demonische René Richell aan zijn slachtoffer Johan: ‘Als je vader naar Holland komt, zal ik hem van onze samenspanning een volkomen juist en nauwkeurig verhaal doen’. Ondergangen is, zegt De Haan, ‘van andere ge-aardheid’ dan het voorafgaande werk: Pijpelijntjes I (eerste en tweede versie), Pathologieën en Pijpelijntjes II; in deze volgorde rangschikt hij in 1906, poserend als representant van ongenaakbaar kunstenaarschap, zijn oeuvre. Aan de lezer gaf de chronologie der publicaties een heel ander beeld: Pijpelijntjes I verscheen in 1904, Ondergangen in 1907 in een tijdschrift (en in boekvorm pas in 1984), Pathologieën in 1908 en Pijpelijntjes II, op enkele fragmenten in De Nieuwe Gids na, helemaal nooit. In Ondergangen wordt een relatie tussen twee zusters beschreven, de oudste zuster een doetje, door de jongste zuster, een serpent, onder druk gezet en uitgebuit. Dat lijkt niet helemaal ‘Pijpelijntjes-achtig’. Toch heeft die relatie wezenlijk overeenkomst met de relatie tussen Sam en Joop (resp. Hans en Cor) en die tussen René Richell en Johan. |
