St- Willibrordstraat.Beste Van Eeden, met de kerstdagen, die mij een beetje verademing brengen, schrijf ik je nog even. Voortdurend heb ik van je laatsten brief een groot verdriet gehad. Ik heb al mijn sterkte noodig om er boven-op te blijven. Het gaat volstrekt niet goed. Voor mijn candidaats-examen ben ik geslaagd, maar dat is dan ook alles. Ik ben nog steeds op de R.V.B. en met geene betere vooruitzichten. Ik zie volstrekt geen mensch meer, en leef, behalve met Hans, zonder iemand. Ik zou wel gaarne met deze dagen eens naar je huis zijn gekomen, doch ik geloof niet, dat mijn bezoek je aangenaam was geweest. Het spijt me dat de Eendracht je zorgen geeft. Uit 1905 moet ook een brief stammen van De Haan aan het bestuur van de Vereeniging van Letterkundigen, voorzitter: Lodewijk van Deyssel. Een toneelstuk van Herman Heijermans, Allerzielen, was op Kerstavond 1904 in première gegaan en vervolgens in een reeks plaatsen verboden. Het stuk Allerzielen werd in 1905 in de eerste en de derde aflevering (januari en maart) van De XXe Eeuw gedeeltelijk afgedrukt. Het speelde ook nog een kleine rol in De Haans polemiek met Tak. De Haan zag een parallel met het lot van zijn roman en had daarover in Het Volk willen schrijven. Zijn stukje werd niet geplaatst. In de Open brief aan P.L. Tak494. lezen we: ‘Toen de weigeringen kwamen van Allerzielen op te voeren, en het Volk daar zoo'n hoog woord over had, heb ik gevraagd het verschil te mogen weten tusschen censuur van een dorpersburgemeester en van P.L. Tak? Hierop is enz. En het stukje is enz.’. |
